Book excerpt: Neutrinos are one of the most abundant particles in the universe. Because they have very little interaction with matter, however, they are incredibly difficult to detect. Neutrinos are similar to the more familiar electron, with one crucial difference: neutrinos do not carry electric charge. Because neutrinos are electrically neutral, they are not affected by the electromagnetic forces which act on electrons. Three types of neutrinos are known. Each type or 'flavour' of neutrino is related to a charged particle (which gives the corresponding neutrino its name). Hence, the 'electron neutrino' is associated with the electron, and two other neutrinos are associated with heavier versions of the electron called the muon and the tau. The book presents citations from the literature for the last three years from the journal literature and the existent book literature. Access is provided by subject, author and title indexes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neutrinos play a fundamental role in the latest particle physics theories, such as Grand Unified Theories, theories of supersymmetry, and superstring theory. Their mass yields an important boundary condition for grand unification models. They are the best candidates for dark matter in the universe, and their mass could determine its large scale structure and evolution. Neutrinos probe the interior of collapsing stars, and understanding them may lead to a solution of the solar neutrino problem. In ten chapters written by experts in each of these fields this book gives a comprehensive presentation of our current knowledge of the neutrino, of its role in nuclear particle and astrophysics theories, and of ongoing experimental efforts to learn more about its own nature. Graduate students and researchers in these fields will find this book a reliable advanced text and source of reference.

Book excerpt: This important book presents the proceedings of the conference ?Neutrinos and Implications for Physics Beyond the Standard Model?, put on by the Yang Institute for Theoretical Physics, State University of New York at Stony Brook. The observation of neutrino masses and lepton mixing constitutes the first confirmed evidence for physics beyond the Standard Model. This evidence includes the measured deficiency of charged current reactions induced by solar neutrinos and the anomalous zenith angle distribution of atmospheric neutrinos. A profound question now facing theorists is: What do these observations imply for new physics? At the conference, members of the major experiments gave an update on current experimental evidence from solar and atmospheric neutrino data for neutrino oscillations, and status reports from KamLAND and MiniBooNE. Leading theorists also reported on neutrinoless double beta decay, high energy neutrino scattering and precision electroweak data, theoretical models for neutrino masses and lepton mixing, and constraints from neutrino data, etc. Since neutrino physics is at present one of the most exciting areas of particle physics, this volume should be of interest to a wide variety of students and researchers in physics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers a valuable insight into various aspects of the ongoing work directed at measuring neutrino mass. It took twenty years to refute the assertions of Bethe and Peierls that neutrinos were not observable, but it has since been realised that much can be learnt from these particles. The moral is, as Fiorini argues here, that the study of neutrinos was and remains demanding but rewarding. Subjects addressed in this volume include; clarifying the meaning of the Klapdor-Kleingrothaus results, probing the Majorana nature of neutrinos, observing lepton number violating effects for the first time, studying the end point of the spectrum in the search for neutrino masses and speculating whether it is possible to measure neutrino masses in cosmology. Lectures are enriched with rich historical overviews and valuable introductory material. Attention is also given to theoretical topics such as the evolution of the concept of mass in particle physics, a status report on neutrino oscillations and current discussion on neutrino masses. The reader is further reminded that neutrino masses may also have some bearing on the very origin of the matter among us, and have many deep links with other important lines of current physics research.

Book excerpt: This volume of important papers by one the world's leading astrophysicists provides a sweeping survey of the incisive and exciting applications of nuclear and particle physics to a wide range of problems in astrophysics and cosmology. The prime focus of the book is on Big Bang cosmology and the role of primordial nucleosynthesis in establishing the modern consensus on the Big Bang. This leads into the connection of cosmology to particle physics and the constraints put on various elementary particles by astrophysical arguments. Big Bang Nucleosynthesis has also led to the argument for nonbaryonic dark matter and is thus related to the major problem in physical cosmology today, namely, structure formation. The nuclear-particle interface with astrophysics also extends to the other topics of major interest such as the age of the universe, cosmic rays, supernovae, and solar neutrinos, each of which will be discussed in some detail. Each section contains historical papers, current papers, and frequently a popular article on the subject which provides an overview of the topic. This volume is testimony to the success of the integration of nuclear and particle physics with astrophysics and cosmology, and to the ingenuity of the work in this area which has earned the author numerous prestigious awards. The book, which is accessible to beginning graduate students, should be of particular interest to researchers and students in astronomy, astrophysics, cosmology and gravitation, and also in high energy and nuclear physics.

Book excerpt: The twelfth Advanced Study Institute (ASI) on Techniques and Con cepts of High Energy Physics was held at the Hotel on the Cay in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands in June 2002. The Institute attracted 11 lecturers and 42 advanced PhD students and recent PhD recipients in experimental particle physics from 14 different countries. The scientific program covered a broad sweep of topics that are expected to remain of interest for many years to come. The topics in this volume complement those in earlier volumes (published by Kluwer) and should be of interest to many physicists. The main financial support for the Institute was provided by the Scientific Affairs Division of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). The Institute was eo-sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab), the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), the Florida State Univer sity (FSU) - Offices of the Provost and the Dean of Arts and Sciences, the Department of Physics and the FSU High Energy Physics Group - and the Institute for Theoretical and Experimental Physics (ITEP, Moscow).

Book excerpt: In the waning years of the Soviet Union scientific research falls far behind. Vasili, head of KGB, tries to gain Western knowledge by espionage. He persuades Dmitri, a physicist, to defect to the USA. Dmitri obtains a position at NSF and later at FermiLab, while remaining entangled in the KGB web. After the disintegration of the Soviet Union Vasili becomes very powerful and wants to strengthen science in the new Russia. He asks Dmitri to return home, because Russian knowledge needs upgrading. Dmitri is appointed director of IHEP in Moscow. He is not successful, because the best Russian scientists have emigrated to the West. Blackmail and intimidation pursue him. To escape Vasili's influence, Dmitri accepts a job at CERN in Geneva, where the largest particle accelerator in the world, the LHC, is under construction. Vasili now wants revenge. When he does not succeed in obtaining Western knowledge through espionage and cybercrime he wants to ruin Dmitri and to obstruct research at CERN.

Book excerpt: The development in our understanding of symmetry principles is reviewed. Many symmetries, such as charge conjugation, parity and strangeness, are no longer considered as fundamental but as natural consequences of a gauge field theory of strong and electromagnetic interactions. Other symmetries arise naturally from physical models in some limiting situation, such as for low energy or low mass. Random dynamics and attempts to explain all symmetries ? even Lorentz invariance and gauge invariance ? without appealing to any fundamental invariance of the laws of nature are discussed. A selection of original papers is reprinted.
