Book Synopsis Principles and Practice of Child Psychiatry by : Stella Chess
Download or read book Principles and Practice of Child Psychiatry written by Stella Chess and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1978-05-31 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stella Chess's many admirers throughout the world have long looked forward to the day when she would produce her own textbook of child psychiatry. They will not be disappointed in this thoughtful and per ceptive account of the principles and practices of the subject, written in collaboration with Dr. Hassibi. It has all the hallmarks we have come to recognize as distinctive of the Chess approach to child psychiatry-gentle yet subtle and penetrating, always appreciative of the feelings and concerns of both the children and their parents, well informed and critically aware of research findings but far from over awed by the contributions of science, and above all immensely practi cal. Anyone who wants to know how one of the world's outstanding clinicians appraises what child psychiatry has to offer could do no bet ter than to read this book. Child psychiatry differs from general psychiatry in being con cerned with a developing organism, and it is entirely appropriate that the book begins with an account of child development and of the prin cipal theories put forward to explain it. Chess and Hassibi recognize the importance of theory in organizing ideas and in suggesting expla nations, but they remain skeptical of how far existing theories do in fact account for the outstanding issues in development. They note the limitations of all theories in explaining how development takes place and why individual differences occur in the way they do.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Neurotic Disorders of Childhood: Including a Study of Auto and Intestinal Intoxications, Chronic Anaemia, Fever, Eclampsia, Epilepsy, Migraine, Chorea, Hysteria, Asthma, Etc In these papers I made an effort to study the physi ological peculiarities of the immature nervous Systems of infants and children, and to note the all - important bear ing which these peculiarities had in producing and in giv ing individuality to the neuroses of childhood. It is a well-known fact that infants and children are especially predisposed to serious and complicated nerv ous disorders, and that this class of diseases has been very little understood by the general practitioner, and has, in fact, not been a matter of special study by neurologists. For these reasons I decided to revise the papers previously published in the Archives of Pediatrics and make of them the nucleus of a book on the Neurotic Dis orders of Childhood. Book Synopsis The Heredity of Behavior Disorders in Adults and Children by : D.L. Pauls
Download or read book The Heredity of Behavior Disorders in Adults and Children written by D.L. Pauls and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current trends in morbidity suggest that by the beginning of the twen ty-first century, psychiatric illness may become the most pressing problem in public health in many of the advanced countries. As ably demonstrated by Vandenberg, Singer, and Pauls, the principal identifia ble etiology of the major psychiatric disorders is heredity; if progress is to be made in prevention and treatment of these disorders, it may have to come from improved understanding of their inheritance. A relentless increase has been observed in the frequency of mood disorders, primarily major depression but also manic-depressive ill ness, appearing earlier and more frequently in each age cohort born since (approximately) 1940. Because major depression is a recurrent disorder, whose episodes increase in frequency with age, the number of observed depressions can be expected to increase dramatically as these people reach middle and old age. The rate of suicide has also increased enormously, according to birth cohort. Starting with people born around 1935, the rate of suicide between 15 and 19 years of age has increased more than 10 times from the earliest to the most recent birth cohorts. What is not clear is if there will be a compensatory reduction in suicide rate as this cohort ages, because people likely to commit suicide will have done so earlier, or if this presages a general increase in suicide, comparable to the increase in mood disorders and perhaps a function of them.
