Book excerpt: Surfism is a philosophy that views consciousness in terms that correspond to surfing. Portrayed metaphorically as a breaking wave, the mind is formed by the confluence of spatial and temporal relations. Consciousness has been depicted metaphorically as ‘light’ since ancient times. The metaphor of light leads to abstraction, which is useful in the service of rational thought, but costly to the individual, when he makes the mistake of ‘seeing’ himself as a spatial entity, separated from the world. The alternative I propose is drawn from phenomenology, which deviates from traditional western philosophy by examining personal experience. I suggest that motion is a better metaphor, because it is based on the mind’s intimate connection with the body. In essence, the problem with using ‘light’ as a metaphor for consciousness is that light illuminates space, which implies that space is perceived before motion. However, optic flow engages motion in order to reveal space: so motion comes first. It has ontological priority over space.
