Book excerpt: Wood-based materials are CO2-neutral, renewable, and considered to be environmentally friendly. The huge variety of wood species and wood-based composites allows a wide scope of creative and esthetic alternatives to materials with higher environmental impacts during production, use and disposal. Quality of wood is influenced by the genetic and environmental factors. One of the emerging uses of wood are building and construction applications. Modern building and construction practices would not be possible without use of wood or wood-based composites. The use of composites enables using wood of lower quality for the production of materials with engineered properties for specific target applications. Even more, the utilization of such reinforcing particles as carbon nanotubes and nanocellulose enables development of a new generation of composites with even better properties. The positive aspect of decomposability of waste wood can turn into the opposite when wood or wood-based materials are exposed to weathering, moisture oscillations, different discolorations, and degrading organisms. Protective measures are therefore unavoidable for many outdoor applications. Resistance of wood against different aging factors is always a combined effect of toxic or inhibiting ingredients on the one hand, and of structural, anatomical, or chemical ways of excluding moisture on the other.

Book excerpt: This volume of Advances in Soft Computing and Lecture Notes in Computer th Science vols. 5551, 5552 and 5553, constitute the Proceedings of the 6 Inter- tional Symposium of Neural Networks (ISNN 2009) held in Wuhan, China during May 26–29, 2009. ISNN is a prestigious annual symposium on neural networks with past events held in Dalian (2004), Chongqing (2005), Chengdu (2006), N- jing (2007) and Beijing (2008). Over the past few years, ISNN has matured into a well-established series of international conference on neural networks and their applications to other fields. Following this tradition, ISNN 2009 provided an a- demic forum for the participants to disseminate their new research findings and discuss emerging areas of research. Also, it created a stimulating environment for the participants to interact and exchange information on future research challenges and opportunities of neural networks and their applications. ISNN 2009 received 1,235 submissions from about 2,459 authors in 29 co- tries and regions (Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Finland, Germany, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Islamic Republic of Iran, Japan, Jordan, Macao, Malaysia, Mexico, Norway, Qatar, Republic of Korea, Singapore, Spain, Taiwan, Thailand, Tunisia, United Kingdom, United States, Venezuela, Vietnam, and Yemen) across six continents (Asia, Europe, North America, South America, Africa, and Oceania). Based on rigorous reviews by the Program Committee members and reviewers, 95 high-quality papers were selected to be published in this volume.

Book excerpt: Computer neural networks are a branch of artificial intelligence, inspired to behave in a manner similar to the human brain; they are trained and they learn from their training. Computer neural networks have a wide variety of applications, mostly hinged around modelling, forecasting, and general predictions. This book illustrates how to use computer neural networks on MATLAB in very simple and elegant manner. The language of the book is elementary as it is meant for beginners, readers are notassumed to have previous skills on the subject. Projects, in varying degrees, have been used to make sure that readers get a practical and hands-on experience on the subject. The book is meant for you if you want to get a quick start with the practical use of computer neural networks on MATLAB without the boredom associated with a lengthy theoretical write-up.

Newer powers like China are emerging through shared economic partnerships and this creates opportunities to grow and brings about new challenges in the stability, growth, and security of regional and global economy. The economic synergy of the Belt and Road is evolving, and it is resonating and impacting geopolitics, geoeconomics, and geostrategies. Central Asia is the new frontier, and it has the capacity to become a major global contributor. A heightened sense of continuum economic realization through collaboration is capable of bringing and showing prosperity and progress to the larger region. The work made in this research is in support of the Belt and Road initiatives, however, the focus of the research was to assess economic readiness of Central Asia. China is ready with its resources, its finances, and its manpower to take on the BRI challenges towards achieving national prosperity and solidarity glory for China. For Central Asia, the BRI is an important feat that it needs to secure for its own development course, but how ready are they? This research study is the gate that opens up to new and more of such works for the next 30 years.
