Book Synopsis The Different Modes of Existence by : Étienne Souriau
Download or read book The Different Modes of Existence written by Étienne Souriau and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2016-03-01 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What relation is there between the existence of a work of art and that of a living being? Between the existence of an atom and that of a value like solidarity? These questions become our own each time a reality—whether it is a piece of music, someone we love, or a fictional character—is established and begins to take on an importance in our lives. Like William James or Gilles Deleuze, Souriau methodically defends the thesis of an existential pluralism. There are indeed different manners of existing and even different degrees or intensities of existence: from pure phenomena to objectivized things, by way of the virtual and the “super-existent,” to which works of art and the intellect, and even morality, bear witness. Existence is polyphonic, and, as a result, the world is considerably enriched and enlarged. Beyond all that exists in the ordinary sense of the term, it is necessary to allow for all sorts of virtual and ephemeral states, transitional realms, and barely begun realities, still in the making, all of which constitute so many “inter-worlds.”

Book Synopsis Ethics, Society, Politics by : Hajo Greif
Download or read book Ethics, Society, Politics written by Hajo Greif and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2013-10-30 with total page 602 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A real book on ethics, as Wittgenstein had it, if one could conceive it in the first place, would be the book to destroy all other books. Yet there is an increasing number of real-world discourses in which ethical values are mobilized as justifications for socio-political action while, in turn, moral problems are becoming a topic of political negotiation. Although it will be difficult to find systematic accounts of an absolute good or of absolute values in these debates, it is equally difficult to imagine them not being deeply informed by such considerations. Rather than merely adding to the corpus of applied ethics on the one hand or remaining in seemingly Wittgensteinian silence about ethics on the other, many contributions to this volume explore the reach of what can be said in ethical terms, while others provide critical discussions of what is being said in various fields of applied ethics and political philosophy under real-world power relations. This volume collects invited contributions from the 35th International Wittgenstein Symposium 2012 in Kirchberg am Wechsel, Austria. Authors include: Alice Crary, Peter Dabrock, Rom Harré, Agnes Heller, Jaakko Hintikka, Peter Koller, Anton Leist, Chantal Mouffe, Julian Nida-Rümelin, Hans Sluga, David Stern, Gianni Vattimo.
Download or read book The Sleepwalkers written by Hermann Broch and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2011-07-20 with total page 657 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With his epic trilogy, The Sleepwalkers, Hermann Broch established himself as one of the great innovators of modern literature, a visionary writer-philosopher the equal of James Joyce, Thomas Mann, or Robert Musil. Even as he grounded his narratives in the intimate daily life of Germany, Broch was identifying the oceanic changes that would shortly sweep that life into the abyss. Whether he is writing about a neurotic army officer (The Romantic), a disgruntled bookkeeper and would-be assassin (The Anarchist), or an opportunistic war-deserter (The Relaist), Broch immerses himself in the twists of his characters' psyches, and at the same time soars above them, to produce a prophetic portrait of a world tormented by its loss of faith, morals, and reason.
Download or read book Barbarian Spring written by Jonas Lüscher and published by Haus Publishing. This book was released on 2015-03-15 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On a business trip to Tunisia, Preising, a leading Swiss industrialist, is invited to spend the week with the daughter of a local gangster. He accompanies her to the wedding of two London city traders at a desert luxury resort that was once the site of an old Berber oasis. With the wedding party in full swing and the bride riding up the aisle on a camel, no one is aware that the global financial system stands on the brink of collapse. As the wedding guests nurse their hangovers, they learn that the British pound has depreciated tenfold, and their world begins to crumble around them. So begins Barbarian Spring, the debut novel from Jonas Lüscher, a major emerging voice in European fiction. The timely and unusual novel centers on a culture clash between high finance and the value system of the Maghreb. Provocative and entertaining, Barbarian Spring is a refreshingly original and all-too-believable satire for our times.
Book Synopsis The End of Modernity by : Gianni Vattimo
Download or read book The End of Modernity written by Gianni Vattimo and published by Polity. This book was released on 1992-04-08 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now available in paperback, this book provides an elegant analysis of the philosophical background to the post-modernity debate. Vattimo focuses on the work of Nietzsche and Heidegger and shows how their bitter criticisms of modern European thought prepared the way for more recent proclamations of the end of the modern era. Vattimo pursues questions central to aesthetics and hermeneutic philosophy and sides with contemporary philosophers such as Gadamer and Rorty in rejecting the search for stable and transcendent foundations for knowledge. Going beyond their work he introduces the notions of 'weak thought' and 'weak ontology' which, he argues, offer a way of 'going beyond' metaphysics by curing philosophy of the modernist disease and by resituating questions of truth and being within the realm of human experience.
Book Synopsis Conscience and Conscientious Objections by : Anders Schinkel
Download or read book Conscience and Conscientious Objections written by Anders Schinkel and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 639 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Western countries conscientious objection is usually accommodated in various ways, at least in certain areas (military conscription, medicine) and to some extent. It appears to be regarded as fundamentally different from other kinds of objection. But why? This study argues that conscientious objection cannot be understood as long as conscience is misunderstood. The author provides a new interpretation of the historical development of expressions of conscience and thought on the subject, and offers a new approach to conscientious objection rooted in the symbol-approach to conscience.

Book Synopsis Mental Neuroimplants by : Margit M Schreier
Download or read book Mental Neuroimplants written by Margit M Schreier and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2020-11-05 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mental Neuroimplants provides a new take on personality development through brain research - a book for the general reader and practitioner alike. It shows how mental health is influenced by basic neuroscientific rules, and how these can be stabilised and strengthened using a new approach: Mental Neuroimplants. Individual positive emotional worlds can directly impact the brain and - in turn - the psychological health of the person in question. This study shows how this can directly improve quality of life. The authors emphasise that the individual's lifestyle can lead to long-term physical and environmentally induced changes - which can even be effective across generations. The central message of this book is to raise awareness; how using psychological neuroimplants can have a positive impact on numerous areas of life including emotion, health and material prosperity. Hans J. Markowitsch was Professor of Physiological Psychology at the University of Bielefeld, Germany. He studied psychology and biology at the University of Konstanz, had professorships for biopsychology and physiological psychology at the Universities of Konstanz, Bochum, and Bielefeld. His research centres on the neural and mental bases of memory disorders and on interactions between memory, emotion and consciousness. He is author, co-author or editor of about 30 books and has written around 700 scientific articles. Margit M. Schreier has been working since 1999 as an Independent Management Consultant.
