Was hat den Stellungskrieg rund 48 Monate am Leben erhalten? Eine mögliche von vielen Antworten soll hier bei der Artillerie und dem deutschen Stellungsbau gesucht werden. Kurzum, was war 1916-1917 der Beitrag der Artillerie zum Stellungskrieg? ''Den Strategen des ''Großen Krieges'' fiel über Jahre nichts besseres ein, als immer blutigere und absurdere Materialschlachten zu inszenieren, in denen unter Aufbietung der anvanciertesten Formen moderner Destruktionstechnik der frontale Durchbruch errungen und, als sich dies als illosorisch erwies, der Gegner ''weißgeblutet'' werden sollte.'' Die vorliegende Arbeit siedelt ihren Untersuchungsgegenstand in der Nähe eines Phänomens an, das auch heute noch das Bild vom Ersten Weltkrieg entscheidend prägt. Ein Großteil des Kriegsverlaufes an der Westfront bildeten eine Vielzahl von mehrmonatigen Schlachten, die trotz intensivstem Material- und Menscheneinsatz auf beiden Seiten keine nennenswerten Veränderungen der Frontlinie brachten. Das einleitende Zitat beschreibt dieses Phänomen der Materialschlachten sehr treffend. Im modernen Krieg wurde der Soldat als ''Angestellter des Todes'' zum ''Fließbandarbeiter'' an einem perfektionierten Arbeitsplatz. Er arbeitete an, mit und für die Maschine gewordener Waffe. Besonders passend ist dieser Vergleich auf die Tätigkeit des Artilleristen, der den Tag unermüdlich damit verbrachte, seine Maschine mit Granaten zu füttern. Die Artillerie war mit das wichtigste Kriegsgerät in den Schlachten an der Westfront, weshalb sie hier einmal größere Aufmerksamkeit verdient.
