Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 80's the countries of Asia-Pacific had first experienced 'economic miracles'. Then after a short period of stagnation and retrenchment in the 90's, the economic prosperity is again in full swing from the beginning of the 21st century. The major driving force behind this is the rapidly growing economic and technical cooperation among countries (China, Japan, South Korea and Southeast Asian countries) in the region, attributable to liberalization of trade and Free Trade Agreements efforts which is expected to lead to the establishment of a common market like EU. This book is the most comprehensive compendium of expertise about the current economic exchanges and chances of a common market in the Asia-Pacific realm and their perspectives substantiated by case studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In this era of ongoing globalization a coherent vision on Europe's changing geo-economy is more important than ever before. Drawing on the work of Schumpeter, Fourasti'e and Perroux, the book at hand offers a new and policy-oriented perspective on regional economic change in Europe. Conceptually, it develops a middle-range theory by extending Schumpeter's vision with a sectoral and spatial dimension. This neo-Schumpeterian framework is concretized by exploring fifty years of structural change in Sardinia, the Ruhrgebiet and the Öresund. "

Book excerpt: A historic analysis of the evolution of money and credit reveals how the nature of money changed: private property plus interest, tally sticks, coinage, fractional reserve banking, gold standards, fiat currencies, debasement of fiat against gold. The results of the historic analysis are combined with the new theories of money, credit, and finance of Bethmann, Heinsohn, Kindleberger, Kutyn, Malik, Martin, Minsky, Nuri, Rothbard, Soddy, Soros, and Steiger. Their integration forms a stringent economic theory that is able to explain the past and present economic and financial system from a very new perspective executing a paradigm shift in economics, finance, and monetary theory.

Book excerpt: The first volume of the new Transatlantic Public Policy series comprises contributions by members of the Transatlantic Policy Consortium (TPC). Earlier versions of the papers published in this volume have been presented and discussed at the TPC Colloquium in Speyer, Germany, in June 2003 on the theme of Liberalization and Democratic Governance. They centre around subthemes which are critical on both sides of the Atlantic: the role of the state with social and economic actors, policy development and regulatory challenges to the state and the changing nature of democratic institutions and participation. Some contributions represent updated versions of papers originally prepared for the TPC Colloquium in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in September 2001 on public service ethics at both national and international levels. The earlier publication of these papers fell victim to the terrorist attacks of that time. The book provides a unique insight into European and US-American public policy issues and thinking.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Germany in the 20th century endured two world wars, a failed democracy, Hitler's dictatorship, the Holocaust, and a country divided for 40 years after World War II. But it has also boasted a strong welfare state, affluence, liberalization and globalization, a successful democracy, and the longest period of peace in European history. A History of Twentieth-Century Germany provides a survey of German history during a century of extremes. Ulrich Herbert sees German history in the 20th century as determined by two contradictory perspectives. On one hand, there are the world wars and great catastrophes that divide the country's history into two parts-before and after 1945. Germany is the birthplace of radical ideologies of the left and right and the only country in which each ideology became the foundation of government. This pattern left its stamp on both the first and second halves of the century. On the other hand, the rise of modern industrial society led to decades of conflict over the social and political order regardless of which political system was in force. Considering these contradictory developments, Herbert tackles the questions of both the collapse in the first half of the century and the development from a post-fascist, ruined society to one of the most stable liberal democracies in the world in the latter half. Herbert's analysis brings together wars and terror, utopia and politics, capitalism and the welfare state, socialism and liberal democratic society, gender and generations, culture and lifestyles, European integration and globalization. The resulting book sets a standard by which historians of the period will be measured in the future.
