Book excerpt: The survey outlines some of the recent research advances in network equilibrium and programming models. The introduction traces their evolution starting with principles, through the development of programming and traffic assignment procedures, decomposition, and network synthesis. The next section presents abstracts of some prominent network equilibrium models. This is followed by abstracts of network synthesis models. A summary section presents the models in common notation to facilitate structural comparisons. The final section outlines suggested directions for further research. (Author).

Book excerpt: Network flow and network design problems arise in various application areas of combinatorial optimization, e.g., in transportation, production, or telecommunication. This thesis contributes new results to four different problem classes from this area, providing models and algorithms with immediate practical impact as well as theoretical insights into complexity and combinatorial structure of network optimization problems: (i) We introduce a new model for tactical transportation planning that employs a cyclic network expansion to integrate routing and inventory decisions into a unified capacitated network design formulation. We also devise several algorithmic approaches to solve the resulting optimization problem and demonstrate the applicability of our approach on a set of real-world logistic networks. (ii) We present approximation algorithms for combined location and network design problems, including the first constant factor approximation for capacitated location routing. (iii) We derive a max-flow/min-cut theorem for abstract flows over time, a generalization of the well-known work of Ford and Fulkerson that restricts to a minimal set of structural requirements. (iv) We devise algorithms for finding orientations of embedded graphs with degree constraints on vertices and faces, answering an open question by Frank.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1979 and with a case-study from Indonesia, this volume examines the question of planning the provision of transport facilities as a special case of the general planning problem. It deals with the modelling (including conceptual short-comings of it), analysis, estimation and control of transport planning and the challenges associated with planning in uncertainty. As well as devoting specific chapters to network planning, the book also provides background material on transport planning, locational theory and economics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book seeks to summarize our recent progress in dynamic trans portation network modeling. It concentrates on ideal dynamic network models based on actual travel times and their corresponding solution algorithms. In contrast, our first book DynamIc Urban Transportation Network Models - The ory and Implications for Intelligent Vehicle-Hzghway Systems (Springer-Verlag, 1994) focused on instantaneous dynamic network models. Comparing the two books, the major differences can be summarized as follows: 1. This book uses the variational inequality problem as the basic formulation approach and considers the optimal control problem as a subproblem for solution purposes. The former book used optimal control theory as the basic formulation approach, which caused critical problems in some circumstances. 2. This book focuses on ideal dynamic network models based on actual travel times. The former book focused on instantaneous dynamic network models based on currently prevailing travel times. 3. This book formulates a stochastic dynamic route choice model which can utilize any possible route choice distribution function instead of only the logit function. 4. This book reformulates the bilevel problem of combined departure time/ route choice as a one-level variational inequality. 5. Finally, a set of problems is provided for classroom use. In addition, this book offers comprehensive insights into the complexity and challenge of applying these dynamic network models to Intelligent Trans portation Systems (ITS). Nevertheless, the models in this text are not yet fully evaluated and are subject to revision based on future research.

Book excerpt: Transportation planning plays an essential role in shaping regional and urban lifestyle. Complex decisions regarding policy alternatives for railroads, shipping, airline, and roadway traffic can often be, and often have been, analyzed using network optimization techniques. In this paper, we survey applications of network algorithms to transportation planning, stressing networks models and their efficient computer implementation. We discuss recent contributions concerning shortest paths, minimum cost network flows, traffic equilibrium, vehicle routing, and network design and we enumerate several open research problems. Much of our discussion reflects an emerging theme in the analysis of transportation problems, the blending of ideas from transportation science, computer science, and operations research. (Author).

Book excerpt: When solving real-life engineering problems, linguistic information is often encountered that is frequently hard to quantify using "classical" mathematical techniques. This linguistic information represents subjective knowledge. Through the assumptions made by the analyst when forming the mathematical model, the linguistic information is often ignored. On the other hand, a wide range of traffic and transportation engineering parameters are characterized by uncertainty, subjectivity, imprecision, and ambiguity. Human operators, dispatchers, drivers, and passengers use this subjective knowledge or linguistic information on a daily basis when making decisions. Decisions about route choice, mode of transportation, most suitable departure time, or dispatching trucks are made by drivers, passengers, or dispatchers. In each case the decision maker is a human. The environment in which a human expert (human controller) makes decisions is most often complex, making it difficult to formulate a suitable mathematical model. Thus, the development of fuzzy logic systems seems justified in such situations. In certain situations we accept linguistic information much more easily than numerical information. In the same vein, we are perfectly capable of accepting approximate numerical values and making decisions based on them. In a great number of cases we use approximate numerical values exclusively. It should be emphasized that the subjective estimates of different traffic parameters differs from dispatcher to dispatcher, driver to driver, and passenger to passenger.
