Book excerpt: Consular Affairs and Diplomacy analyses the multifaceted nature of diplomacy’s consular dimension in international relations. It contributes to our understanding of key themes in consular affairs today, the consular challenges that are facing the three great powers—the United States, Russia and China—as well as the historical origins of the consular institution in Europe. Consular Affairs and Diplomacy breaks new ground in the field of diplomatic studies by illustrating how consular affairs can be understood in the broader context of diplomatic practice and vice versa. As a result, the much-neglected study of the consular institution may improve our understanding of contemporary diplomacy.

Download or read book American Consuls in the Holy Land, 1832-1914 written by Ruth Kark and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides new insights into the role of U.S. consuls in the Ottoman Middle East in the special context of the Holy Land. The motivations and functioning of the American consuls in Jerusalem, and of the consular agents in Jaffa and Haifa, are analyzed as part of the US diplomatic and consular activity throughout the world, and of Western involvement in the Ottoman Empire and in Palestine during the century preceding World War I. The processes of cultural, demographic, economic, environmental, and settlement change and the contribution of the US consuls and American settlers to development of and modernization of Palestine are discussed. Based on primary archival sources such facets as the role of consuls regarding the use of extraterritorial privileges, Western religious and cultural penetration, control of land and land purchase, non-Muslim settlement, judicial systems, and technological innovations are considered from American, Ottoman, and local viewpoints.

Book Synopsis A Diplomat’s Handbook of International Law and Practice by : Biswanath Sen
Download or read book A Diplomat’s Handbook of International Law and Practice written by Biswanath Sen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It gives me great pleasure to write a foreword to :\1r. Sen's excellent book, and for two reasons in particular. In the first place, in producing it, Mr. Sen has done something vvhich I have long felt needed to be done, and which I at one time had am bitions to do myself. \Vhen, over thirty years ago, and after some years of practice at the Bar, I first entered the legal side of the British Foreign Service, I had not been working for long in the Foreign Office before I conceived the idea of writing - or at any rate compiling - a book to which (in my own mind) I gave the title of "A ~fanual of Foreign Office Law. " This work, had I ever produced it in the form in which I visualised it, could probably not have been published con sistently with the requirements of official discretion. But this did not worry me as I was only contemplating something for private circulation within the Service and in Government circles. :Mr. Sen's aim has been broader and more public-spirited than mine was; but its basis is essentially the same.
