Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nests and Eggs of North American Birds The text of the present edition consists of the characteristic habits of North American birds, with particular reference to their nesting habits and eggs. Many of these will be found to be almost complete life histories of the species. The geographical limits of the North American avifauna at the present time includes all the territory north of the Southern United States boundary, including Greenland and the peninsula of Lower California, with the islands naturally belonging thereto. The second edition of the A. O. U. Check-List, 1895, is the classification which I have followed, including the new species and subspecies enumerated in the Eighth Supplement. All stragglers or accidental visitors have their respective numbers to the left in brackets. For an explanation of the authority of names, Canon L. (page 56)of the A. O. U. Code may be quoted: "The authority for a specific or subspecific name is the first describer of the species or subspecies. When the first describer of the species or subspecies is not also the authority, it is to be enclosed in parenthesis; e. g., Turdus migratorius L., or Merula migratoria (L)." The species and subspecies which have been interpolated in this edition are indicated by the double asterisk (**). No attempt has been made to describe the birds. For an analytical description of these the reader is referred to such works as "Key to North American Birds," by Dr. Elliott Coues, or "Manual of North American Blrds," by Robert Ridgway. While I am indebted to books and periodical literature for a considerable amount of information gleaned from them, my acknowledgments are especially due a large number of active field ornithologists and oologists who have kindly placed at my disposal their notes containing original observations in the field on the nesting and eggs of various birds, many of these being the latest discoveries. Others have furnished descriptions of nests and eggs from specimens in their private collections which, in many cases, were otherwise scarcely obtainable, thus bringing the work down to date as nearly as possible. The illustrations are introduced simply to give the beginner an idea of the characteristic forms, etc., of the birds, together, often, with their environments. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nests and Eggs of American Birds The robin is distributed in the breeding season over the whole United States., excepting the extreme south, and over the most of British America. Everywhere it is one of the earliest birds to nestle, and in the southern part of its range raises two or more broods in a season. In the middle states the robins have paired by April 1, and have begun to build their homes before the middle of the month. As far north as Detroit, fresh eggs are to be had the second and third weeks of April in abundance, while even on the upper Missouri and at Puget Sound, the first broods of young are out early in June, and a second brood prepared for. The situation of the nest is extremely varied, and little concealment seems to be attempted. A fork, or the upper surface of a large limb, in an old orchard tree or garden evergreen, is a favorite site; but woodland trees, the protruding end of a fence-rail, the top of a pillar, a stimp, the ground or a ledge of rocks, the interior of a well, the ribs of a fossil megatherium in a college cabinet, the broken-out hole of a woodpecker or squirrel, or even a bush in the midst of a colony of noisy blackbirds, have all been frequently occupied. Occasionally they will build in companies, as in a case at Danvers, Mass., where fully a dozen pairs built their nests on the plate which supported the rafters of a kiln-house. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Egg Check List of North American Birds: Giving Accurate Descriptions of the Color and Size of the Eggs, and Locations of the Nests of the Land and Water Birds of North America The unprecedented interest manifest in the delightful study of Birds, their nests and eggs has, within the past few years called forth numerous works on the subject, and the literature of the study has vastly increased, especially in this country, where the held is comparatively new. The present publication is an entirely new departure from the beaten paths of voluminous works. It treats especially the subject indicated in its title. Probably no one has felt the need of a work of this character more than the writer. In making a life business of Natural History, I receive numerous inquiries of the following nature - often, written on postal cards: "Please describe the eggs of the following birds for me; also state the location where I am likely to find their nests, i. e., Carolina Wren, Red-tailed Hawk, Kingfisher, Blue-yellow-backed Warbler, and be particular in describing the nidification of the Blue Grosbeak and Canada Grouse." I quote the above from a postal card recently received, and which is undoubtedly from a young student of Oology. It would be almost impossible for me to reply fully to all communications of this kind which I receive in the course of a year. These interogatives led me to put in a condensed form the descriptions which are now before the reader, and as the author of the first "Egg Check List of North American Birds," I venture its publication and await the results. The species of eggs described belong strictly to the North American fauna. These descriptions are taken chiefly from my private collection, consisting upwards of four hundred species of North American Birds' Eggs, mostly in original sets, together with the skins of the birds. It is intended that through the aid of this Check List the collector may be enabled to identify his specimens while in the field. He will learn from this List what a great similarity there is in the eggs of the different species, and in fact, whole families, and how careful he must be to determine correctly. In the latter part of the present work there will be found concise directions for collecting Birds' Eggs and Nests, to which I specially call the attention of all young collectors. Under the head of "Notes" I give additional information regarding the nesting habits of many of the species. I am fully aware that the present List is not entirely complete, and therefore earnestly solicit additions, corrections and notes of every character relating to the subject from Ornithologists and Oologists. Book excerpt: Excerpt from North American Birds Eggs: Illustrating the Eggs of Nearly Every Species of North American Birds The greatest interest in the study of birds centers in their home life. Soon after their arrival from their winter quarters, all birds take upon themselves the duties of reproduction, the first step of which is the securing of a satisfactory location; some species, such as Auklets, Petrels, Burrowing Owls, Kingfishers, Bank Swallows, etc., nest at the end of burrows or holes in the ground; a great many nest upon the ground, some laying their eggs upon the bare sand, leaves, or rock, while others build nests, either bulky or slight as suits their respective tastes; hundreds construct their homes among the branches of trees or bushes, some close to the ground, others among the highest branches, and still others swaying from the ends of the outermost limbs; other species lay their eggs at the bottom of holes in trees, either in natural cavities or in holes dug by their own efforts, the most noticeable in the latter class being the Woodpeckers, which often chisel their way into limbs of living trees. The study of nests alone is most interesting; the rude and slight platforms of the Herons, Cuckoos, Grosbeaks, etc.; the rough but substantial structures of the Robin; and the exquisite, architectural creations of the Hummingbirds, Flycatchers, Orioles, Bush-tits, etc. Surely the work of some of these little feathered creatures, these "homes without hands," show as great a degree of skill and artistic temperament as is seen in the human race. The eggs of the different species vary through all the tints from white to blue, green and brown, some unmarked, others handsomely specked, spotted, blotched or wreathed with different shades of brown, lilac and lavender, and their sizes vary from that of the diminutive Hummingbird to the Albatross, Swan and California Vulture as the largest North American eggs, and the Ostrich of Africa whose egg will contain several quarts. The nesting season ranges from January with some of the Owls to August in the case of the American Goldfinch, but by far the majority of species lay their eggs during May or June. It is at this period during their lives, that birds are at their best; their plumage is the brightest, their voices are the sweetest, and their actions the most brilliant. The purpose of this volume is to furnish a reference and guide to all bird students who may desire to study the home life of our feathered creatures, by a description of how, when and where they build their nests, and the appearance of their eggs. These plates have been carefully colored by hand, by Mrs. Maynard, from the eggs. The dimensions of the eggs are in inches and hundredths of inches, and usually the measurement of the largest and smallest specimens in a large series is given. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life Histories of North American Birds: With Special Reference to Their Breeding Habits and Eggs; With Twelve Lithographic Plates It is not intended that this work shall consist merely of descriptions of nests and eggs. Special attention has been given to the life history, the migratory and breeding ranges, and food of each species. In this connection the latest information, including the field notes made by myself and others and hitherto unpublished, has been freely used. Although involving considerably more labor and a certain amount of repeti tion, I treat each species and subspecies separately, and endeavor to define the breeding range of each as accurately as possible. This method is to some extent open to criticism, and especially so where a species is divided into several geographical races between the boundaries of whose ranges a neutral zone exists in which they intergrade. On account of the limited knowledge we possess of many of our birds, I am well aware that the information given under this head is more or less imperfect, but. This is irremediable in many instances at present. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
