Book excerpt: Man-made nest boxes are surrogate nest sites widely used by waterfowl managers in North America to propagate free-ranging Wood Ducks (Aix sponsa) and other cavity-nesting waterfowl. I monitored 129 and 174 nest boxes in 2020 and 2021, respectively, at Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge and York Woods, Mississippi. I evaluated site-specific biotic and abiotic factors that were potentially influential on nest survival of Wood Ducks and general nesting ecology and apparent nest success of Black-bellied Whistling Ducks (Dendrocygna autumnalis) and Hooded Mergansers (Lophodytes cucullatus). Daily survival rate of Wood Ducks was negatively influenced by increasing encroaching vegetation at Noxubee NWR and varied by year at York Woods. Across both sites and years, Black-bellied Whistling Duck and Hooded Merganser nest success averaged 59% and 77%, respectively. I also evaluated eggshell breaking strength (EBS) between all three species, where EBS was highest in Hooded Mergansers, followed by Black-bellied Whistling Ducks and Wood Ducks.

Book excerpt: Wood ducks are thought to depend on mature hardwood forests juxtaposed with palustrine wetlands, but these habitats have been continuously degraded or destroyed since European settlement. Wood ducks are adaptable and the use of marginal habitats and nest boxes has extended their range. Until now, no study has analyzed the contribution of upland nesting to local population growth and maintenance. This paper investigates predation effects on nest site selection using wood duck nests and simulated nests placed in natural cavities. Logistic regression models of simulated nest data indicated cavity security could be important in the fragmented floodplain forests of Union County Conservation Area (UCCA). No physical characteristics of wood duck nest cavities differentiated successful and unsuccessful nesting attempts. Hens nesting in the area appear to have adapted to predation pressure by nesting in more secure floodplain cavities at UCCA or by nesting in the upland habitats. Floodplain and upland habitats are ecologically intertwined and the local wood duck population would not survive if either habitat were destroyed or severely degraded.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Wood duck breeding biology has largely been studied in artificial nest boxes, but environmental influences on nesting biology must be studied in the context within which wood ducks evolved (i.e. natural tree cavities). Previous work suggested that intra- and inter-seasonal changes in abundance of invertebrate foods and/or accessibility of tree cavities may affect nesting season length and the breeding chronology of wood duck hens. This study examined the relationships of intra-seasonal and annual variation in invertebrate food abundance and leaf emergence with nesting chronology, nesting effort, and nest parasitism rates in a southern Illinois' wood duck population that nests in natural cavities. Nest chronology, nesting effort, and parasitism rates were studied during 1994 -- 1998 and 2001 -- 2002. I modeled wetland conditions with local precipitation and stage of the Mississippi River. Wetland invertebrate food abundance was measured by sweep- net sampling in seasonal and semi-permanent wetlands in 2001 and 2002. Invertebrate sampling was completed during four nesting periods (egg laying, late egg laying/early incubation, incubation! early hatch, hatch) during 2001 -- 2002. Weekly leaf emergence in 2001 and 2002 was measured with a Model-A Spherical Densiometer, from the onset of leaf emergence through the period of maximum upper story leaf coverage. Annual nesting effort of radiomarked hens known to incubate clutches ranged from 42% - 70% throughout the study. Clutch sizes >14 (indicative of nest parasitism) ranged from 8% - 43% during the study and varied inversely with nesting effort. High nesting effort was observed in years with the most stable water levels during egg laying and incubation. Invertebrate biomass did not differ throughout the 2001 (P = 0.76) and 2002 (P = 0.17) nesting seasons. During hatch, densities in 2002 were 1.7 times higher than egg laying and incubation/early hatch; however did not differ from late egg laying/early incubation (P = 0.05). Mean invertebrate densities were not significantly different (P = 0.87) during 2001. Two commonly consumed invertebrates known to occur during nest initiation and hatch, Isopoda and Diptera (primarily Chironomidae), were 10.2% and 18.4% more numerous during the egg laying and hatch (P

Book excerpt: Various ecological and biological aspects of the wood duck (Aix sponsa)were investigated in the elm-ash-maple (Ulmus-Fraxinus- Acer) bottomland timber impoundments at Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge in central New York. Major areas of research included (a) a description of the forest stand with special reference to the ecological impact of seasonal impoundment, (b) the pattern of occurrence and use of natural nest cavities by wood ducks, (c) the nesting response of wood ducks to nest boxes, (d) an investigation of dump nesting, (e) mark-recapture estimates of annual duckling production, (f) a study of vernal pool invertebrates, and (g) a study of brood usage and survival. Spring flooded green timber was found to produce ideal breeding habitat for wood ducks in providing ample acceptable nest cavities (1.60 per acre)and an abundance of early spring (vernal pool) invertebrate food resources, including fairy shrimp (Chirocephalopsis bundyi), cladocerans (Daphnia pulex), mosquito lar.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a story of conservation told through the natural histories of two of the world's most fascinating birds, the Wood Duck of North America and the Mandarin of Asia. The only two species in their genus (Aix), these Northern Wood Ducks are native to different continents but have long been kept together in captivity. Now, for the first time in history, they are also flying side by side in the wild in a small area of northern California. This rare circumstance has given Lawton L. Shurtleff and Christopher Savage the opportunity to observe the Northern Wood Ducks' close relationship and is the starting point of this informative and beautifully rendered book. The opening chapters tell how the Wood Duck and the Mandarin came to inhabit the Pacific Flyway and explain their extraordinary similarities. Subsequent chapters discuss the distinctive histories of the two species and describe the birds throughout the seasons in their native flyways. The Mandarins' place in Asian art and literature is the subject of Chapter Five. The final chapter illuminates the successful work done to protect the North American Wood Duck, which has made a remarkable recovery from near extinction, and the beginning efforts to protect the Mandarin, whose existence in East Asia is seriously threatened. Stunning full-color photographs by renowned wildlife photographers, along with photographs by the authors, capture the exquisite beauty of these much revered birds. Detailed maps show the Wood Ducks' territory in North America and the Mandarins' territory in East Asia and Great Britain. Three appendices--plans for building nestboxes, instructions for banding birds, and lists of books and conservation organizations--and a thorough index are valuable resources in a book that will delight bird-lovers and general readers alike.
