Book Synopsis Science Fiction Magazine Story Index, 1926-1995 by : Terry A. Murray
Download or read book Science Fiction Magazine Story Index, 1926-1995 written by Terry A. Murray and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the appearance of the first science fiction magazine in 1926, thousands of short stories have been published in periodicals devoted to the genre. These stories cover a wide range of subjects, from spacecraft to the human condition, and feature little-known authors as well as masters like Ellison and Asimov. In the past, finding which issue of what magazine ran a certain story was nearly impossible. This much-needed reference tool provides valuable assistance in the daunting task of locating short stories published in science fiction magazines, providing exhaustive indexes to magazines, authors, and titles, allowing a variety of options for research on 34,000 stories appearing in nearly 5,000 issues of 133 genre magazines. Stories from all major American publications, as well as from several minor periodicals, are indexed. Also included is an appendix of the best known and most prolific contributors, giving the titles of all their stories in this work (necessary because the huge author index does not show titles). A guide to how to use this book clarifies its features for the researcher.

Book Synopsis All Our Yesterdays by : Henry Major Tomlinson
Download or read book All Our Yesterdays written by Henry Major Tomlinson and published by London, Heinemann. This book was released on 1930 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1930. Tomlinson was a shipping clerk, a journalist, a war correspondent, a newspaper editor, and a travel writer and novelist. His subject matter is often natural history or the foolishness of mortals. His accounts of the sea, travel, and the Great War have not been surpassed. His antiwar novel, All Our Yesterdays, begins: The traffic of Dockland, where my omnibus stopped, loosened into a broadway. There the vans and lorries, released from the congestion of narrow streets, opened out and made speed in an uproar of iron-shod wheels and hooves on granite blocks. I could hear progress. It was on its way. It was pouring about in a triumphant muddle of noise too loud to be doubted. There was no need to repose on faith in the favored evolution of man. That wonderful conjuration of good things out of this planet by the steam-engine and the cotton-jenny was dominant.
Book Synopsis Science Fiction, Canonization, Marginalization, and the Academy by : Gary Westfahl
Download or read book Science Fiction, Canonization, Marginalization, and the Academy written by Gary Westfahl and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2002-01-30 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science fiction occupies a peculiar place in the academic study of literature. For decades, scholars have looked at science fiction with disdain and have criticized it for being inferior to other types of literature. But despite the sentiments of these traditionalists, many works of science fiction engage recognized canonical texts, such as the Odyssey, and many traditionally canonical works contain elements of science fiction. More recently, the canon has been subject to revision, as scholars have deliberately sought to include works that reflect diversity and have participated in the serious study of popular culture. But these attempts to create a more inclusive canon have nonetheless continued to marginalize science fiction. This book examines the treatment of science fiction within the academy. The expert contributors to this volume explore a wide range of topics related to the place of science fiction in literary studies. These include academic attitudes toward science fiction, the role of journals and cultural gatekeepers in canon formation, and the marginalization of specific works and authors by literary critics. In addition, the volume gives special attention to multicultural and feminist concerns. In discussing these topics, the book sheds considerable light on much broader issues related to the politics of literary studies and academic inquiry.
