In him Nature seems to have done her worst, and conspired with Fate to place her product on an eminence so exalted that all men might see how great a monster she was capable of engendering. Born of a mother, of whom only such a son was worthy, he ran the gamut of every human crime and folly, making the Roman Empire minister to his atrocities, and, cheating venge ance at the end, died lamenting that so splendid a genius should have to pass away. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Principate of the Emperor Nero The Appendices and the Notes contain complete (i believe) references to all the ancient evidence which concerns this history, and, on occasion, discussion of its value or of controversies which arise concerning it. To these Notes and Appendices I must still venture to refer the student even at this time when the examination craze threatens increasingly to degrade, if not to destroy, patient learning in the Uni versity. But the general reader's attention is not distracted from the narrative, as the whole apparatus of Inquiry is thus relegated to the end of the book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Quo Vadis: A Narrative of the Time of Nero In the trilogy "With Fire and Sword," "The Deluge," and "Pan Michael," Sicnkiewiez has given pictures of a great and decisive epoch in modern history. The results of the struggle begun under Bogdan Hmelnitski have been felt for more than two centuries, and they are growing daily importance. The Russia which rose out of that struggle has become a power not only of European but of world-wide significance, and, to all human seeming, she is yet in an early stage of her career. In "Quo Vadis" the author gives us pictures of opening scenes in the conflict of moral ideas with the Roman Empire, - a conflict from which Christianity issued as the leading force in history. The Slavs are not so well known to Western Europe or to us as they are sure to be in the near future; hence the trilogy, with all its popularity and merit, is not appreciated yet as it will be. The conflict described in "Quo Vadis: is of supreme interest to a vast number of person reading English; and this book will rouse, I think, more attention at first than anything written by Sienkiewiez hitherto. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Darkness and Dawn or Scenes in the Days of Nero an Historic Tale Expressions and incidents which, to some, might seem to be startlingly modern, are in reality suggested by passages in the satirists, epigrammatists, and romancers of the Empire, or by anecdotes preserved in the grave pages of Seneca and the elder Pliny. I have, of course, so far assumed the liberty accorded to writers of historic fiction as occasionally to deviate, to a small extent, from exact chronology, but such deviations are very trivial in comparison with those which have been permitted to others, and especially to the great masters of historic fiction. All who know most thoroughly the real features of that Pagan darkness which was deepest before the Christian dawn will see that scarcely even by the most distant allusion have I referred to some of the worst features in the life of that day. While I have not extenuated the realities of cruelty and bloodshed, I have repeatedly softened down their more terrible incidents and details. To have altered that aspect of monotonous misery which pained and wearied its ancient annalist would have been to falsify the real characteristics of the age with which I had to deal. The book is not a novel, nor is it to be judged as a novel. The outline has been imperatively decided for me by the exigencies of fact, not by the rules of art. I have been compelled to deal with an epoch which I should never have touched if I had not seen, in the features which it presented, one main explanation of an historical event the most sacred and the most interesting on which the mind can dwell. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Critical Study of the Sources of the History of the Emperor Nero A study of the sources of the history of Nero must therefore in the main be limited to the works of Tacitus, Suetonius, and Dio Cassius. While it is not altogether futile to attempt to determine what sources these writers again used when composing their works, and to investigate to what extent thev used them,5 it is vastly more profitable to the student of history to carefully compare the records of these writers with each other and with the few other sources that have come down to us. With due consideration of the author's character and life, his method, and the connection in which his statements appear, such a comparison will afford a fairly safe basis for correct judg ments on the conditions and events which they record.
