Book excerpt: Nine of us traveled to Nepal in April 2006 with Dr. Larry Peters to observe various shamanic healing techniques and receive shamanic initiation at the time of the April full moon with Aama Bombo, one of the International Counsel of Indigenous Grandmothers. While we were there anti-monarchy demonstrations broke out and the King of Nepal tried to use curfews to subdue the unrest in Kathmandu. A nationwide strike accompanied the demonstrations and Maoist insurgents took advantage of the turmoil. The US Embassy sent its non-essential personnel out of Nepal, and a serious fuel and food shortage developed. This diary-style record of twenty-four days in April 2006 allows the reader to accompany us as we experienced shamanic training, toured Kathmandu and Pokhara, as well as witnessing history in the making.

Book Synopsis Remaking Buddhism for Medieval Nepal by : Will Tuladhar-Douglas
Download or read book Remaking Buddhism for Medieval Nepal written by Will Tuladhar-Douglas and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-01-24 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Will Tuladhar-Douglas sheds new light on an important branch of Mahayana Buddhism and establishes the existence, character and causes of a renaissance of Buddhism in the fifteenth century in the Kathmandu Valley of Nepal. He provides the basis for the historical study of Newar Buddhism as one distinct tradition among the many that comprise Indic Buddhism. Through a thorough study of the relevant texts in the classical Himalayan languages (Sanskrit, Newari, Tibetan and Nepali), the book puts forward a new thesis about how the Newars legitimated and reinvented their tradition by devising new concepts of canonicity, as such it will appeal to scholars of the history and philology of Buddhism.
Download or read book Depicted Deities written by M.L.B. Blom and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-08-07 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the rules of art. More specifically, it treats of the unwritten rules of Nepalese religious art as laid down in ‘model books’. These can be seen as manuals for the artists, in which they can find the correct way to represent, in visual art, any of some 2000 godly figures. The representation of these gods, all of them with their particular attributes, was (and is) subject to more or less strict rules. These books, the kind of which is also found in Europe in the early Middle Ages, have developed into a special tradition in Nepal, where a unique number of model books was found to be in existence, the oldest of them going back to the 15th century. The author of this study (the first in its kind) has traced the development in time of some 150 popular Hindu deities to determine the meaning of these model books for the artists using them, and also to see if the representation of these gods is in any way related to changes in society.
