The results of this study show that both the EBF and the WBF have experienced surface-faulting earthquakes in the recent geologic past and therefore represent an ongoing seismic hazard to northeastern Utah and southeastern Idaho.

The Mediterranean region is one of the most important regions for neotectonics and related natural hazards. This volume focuses on the neotectonics of the Eastern Mediterranean region, which has experienced many major extensive earthquakes, including the devastating Izmit, Turkey earthquake on August 17, 1999. The event lasted for 37 seconds, killing around 17,000 people, injuring 44,000 people, and leaving approximately half a million people homeless. Since then, several North American, European, and Turkish research groups have studied the neotectonics and earthquake potential of the region using different geological and geophysical methods, including GPS studies, geodesy, and passive source seismology. Some results from their studies were presented in major North American and European geological meetings. This volume highlights the work involving the Eastern Mediterranean region, which has one of the world's longest and best studied active strike-slip (horizontal motion) faults: the east-west trending North Anatolian fault zone, which is very similar to the San Andreas fault in California. Herein we review this knowledge and propose six preliminary seismicity source zones (domains) based upon neotectonic data. Each source zone contains active faults that we contend share common recurrence and behavioural characteristics, in a similar way that source zones are defined using the historic record of seismicity. A seventh offshore domain is proposed based upon analogy with the eastern United States. This data, and conceptual and numerical models describing the nature of the seismicity in each source zone, has the potential to significantly enhance our understanding of seismic hazard in Australia at a time scale more representative than the snapshot provided by the historic record of seismicity. This includes providing a means by which to estimate key parameters underpinning the next generation seismic hazard maps for Australia, such as maximum magnitude earthquake and seismic source zone b values.

New data and theoretical interpretations have given rise to vigorous discussions on how much the two phenomena inter-relate and whether a significant controlling factor on seismicity in northeastern North America and Scandinavia is the crustal uplift that has been occurring since the latest ice age. The lack of a good understanding of these phenomena presented a particular problem for engineering seismologists attempting to prepare accurate seismic hazard estimates for facili ties both on land (e. g. , nuclear power stations and radioactive waste repositories) and offshore (e. g. , petroleum production facili ties) . The NATO Advanced Research Workshop programme provided an opportuni ty to bring together a group of relevant geophysicists, geologists and geodesists from both sides of the North Atlantic, and a workshop on "Causes and Effects of Earthquakes at Passive Margins and in Areas of Postglacial Rebound on both Sides of the North Atlantic" was held in Vordingborg, Denmark, 9-13 May 1988. It was one of three studies conducted in the late 1980s and early 1990s to determine if the Provo segment of the Wasatch fault zone should be subdivided into three smaller segments as tentatively proposed by Machette and others on the basis of their geologic mapping. This investigation was the last of the three studies performed. Those results, combined with the results of paleoseismic investigations at American Fork Canyon and Mapleton, showed that the Wasatch fault where it passes through Utah Valley probably consists of a single, almost 70-kilometer-Iong fault segment (Machette and others, 1992). Publication of the details of the Rock Canyon study has been delayed for several years, chiefly due to the press of new job duties on the part of the investigators. The information remains important and is presented here for the use of those individuals interested in earthquake hazards and seismic-source characteristics of the Wasatch fault in Utah Valley. 21 pages + 2 plates
