Book excerpt: This book focuses on neotectonic movements and river channel evolution of the Indian subcontinent, with special reference to the Himalayan Neotectonics. Neotectonic movements have played an important role in channel evolution in tectonically active zones especially for the mountain chains, foredeeps and active deltas. The book addresses the issues of the channel evolution in neotectonically active domains of India. It aims at readers of India as well as abroad, interested in earth sciences, geomorphology, tectonics, physical geography and river forms and processes of India.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 706 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many years, the two subjects of (1) postglacial rebound and its potential for generating earthquakes and (2) the seismicity of passive continental ml!rgins have been of interest and concern to earth scientists on both sides of the North Atlantic. New data and theoretical interpretations have given rise to vigorous discussions on how much the two phenomena inter-relate and whether a significant controlling factor on seismicity in northeastern North America and Scandinavia is the crustal uplift that has been occurring since the latest ice age. The lack of a good understanding of these phenomena presented a particular problem for engineering seismologists attempting to prepare accurate seismic hazard estimates for facili ties both on land (e. g. , nuclear power stations and radioactive waste repositories) and offshore (e. g. , petroleum production facili ties) . The NATO Advanced Research Workshop programme provided an opportuni ty to bring together a group of relevant geophysicists, geologists and geodesists from both sides of the North Atlantic, and a workshop on "Causes and Effects of Earthquakes at Passive Margins and in Areas of Postglacial Rebound on both Sides of the North Atlantic" was held in Vordingborg, Denmark, 9-13 May 1988. The sup port of the NATO Science Committee is gratefully acknowledged.

This book was released on 2012 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This volume focuses on the continental intraplate region of the United States and provides an update and overview of documented Quaternary faulting and paleoseismic liquefaction east of the Rocky Mountains, and of the application of these results to seismic hazard and risk assessments. Contributions include papers that describe zones of newly recognized Quaternary deformation such as the East Tennessee Seismic Zone, as well as reinterpretations of well-known areas such as the New Madrid Seismic Zone. The chapters make important contributions to the recognition of earthquake sources active during the Quaternary and assess the seismic hazards posed by these sources. This volume should interest a wide range of readers from geology, seismology, hazard assessment, and emergency management"--Provided by publisher.

This book was released on 2012-05-30 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Founded in 1966, the internationally recognized and acclaimed Series ‘Palaeoecology of Africa’ publishes interdisciplinary scientific papers on landscape evolution and on former environments of the African continent. Beginning with topics such as changes in climate and vegetation cover, the papers expand horizons and interconnections to various types of environmental dynamics from the Cainozoic up to the present; moreover, the aspect of human influence since the Late Quaternary is related to many of the areas studied. Volume 31 presents four comprehensive papers on long- and short-term processes of landscape evolution (geological history, neotectonics and proxy Quaternary alluvia), as well as a recent regional perspective on environmental problems in Southern Cameroon. The book acts as a showcase for successful North-South cooperation and capacity building for empowering African Universities. It is problem oriented and applied, and illustrates how scientific and interdisciplinary cooperation can work. In the framework of the German Research Foundation’s (DFG, Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) funded "Rain Forest Savanna Contact" project (2003-2009) two abbreviated English versions of PhD theses are here published, one by J. Eisenberg on neotectonics and the other by M. Sangen on river sediments in rain forest-savanna transitional zones. Complementary articles are an introduction on geological history, by B. Kankeu et al. and a paper on environmental risks by M. Tchindjang et al., together these complete the results of this joint German-Cameroonian research project. This book will be of interest to all concerned with ecosystems dynamics, tropical forests, savannas and related development problems of Third World countries, especially regional planners, ecologists, botanists, earth scientists and students of the Quaternary (e.g. LGM and Holocene ecosystem dynamics, Global Change). It will be valuable for advanced undergraduates and postgraduates as a reference for new research articles on the topic of long‐term geologic‐tectonic and Quaternary landscape evolution in an up‐to‐now not well explored marginal area of the Western Congo basin.

Book excerpt: This report presents the results of a preliminary evaluation of the East Bear Lake (EBF) and West Bear Lake (WBF) fault zones, which bound the east and west sides, respectively, of the Bear Lake Valley. The Bear Lake Valley straddles the Utah/Idaho border northeast of Logan, Utah. The results of this study show that both the EBF and the WBF have experienced surface-faulting earthquakes in the recent geologic past and therefore represent an ongoing seismic hazard to northeastern Utah and southeastern Idaho.

Examining and evaluating both methodological and technical approaches to the study of neotectonics, the book analyzes a variety of issues including the interaction between climatic change and the decay and growth of ice sheets during the Quaternary period, crustal subsidence, recent earth movements at active volcanoes, stress fields, and Neotectonic hazard mapping.
