Book excerpt: Each year, neonatal Intensive care units (NICUs) in the U.S. and around the world help thousands of sick or premature newborns survive. NICUs are committed to the ideals of family-centered care, which encourages shared decision-making between parents and NICU caregivers. In cases of infants with conditions marked by high mortality, morbidity, or great suffering, family-centered care affirms the right of parents to assist in making decisions regarding aggressive treatment for their infant. Often, these parents' difficult and intimate decisions are shaped profoundly by their religious beliefs. In light of this, what precisely are the teachings of the major world religious traditions about the status and care of the premature or sick newborn? Few studies have grappled with what major religious traditions teach about the care of the newborn or how these teachings may bear on parents' decisions. This volume seeks to fill this gap, providing information on religious teachings about the newborn to the multidisciplinary teams of NICU professionals (neonatologists, advance practice nurses, social workers), as well as to parents of NICU patients, and students of bioethics. In chapters dealing with Judaism, Catholicism, Denominational Protestantism, Evangelical Protestantism, African American Protestantism, Sunni and Shi'a Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Navajo religion, and Seventh Day Adventism, leading scholars develop the teachings of these traditions on the status, treatment, and ritual accompaniments of care of the premature or sick newborn. This is an essential book that will serve as a first resort for clinicians who need to understand the religious dynamics influencing anyone making a difficult decision about her sick newborn.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third edition of the Manual of Surgical Neonatal Intensive Care addresses the interdisciplinary area of the perioperative management of newborns with surgical conditions. The manual is a collaborative effort between the surgical staff at Children’s Hospital and the medical staff at Boston Children’s Hospital, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and hospitals further afield. Its intended audience is surgeons, neonatologists, pediatricians, neonatal nurse practitioners, neonatal nurses, critical care transport clinicians, and all other healthcare providers trained to render pre- or postoperative services or counseling in the care of newborns. The authors intend for the manual to be useful to both medical and surgical clinicians. Where appropriate, chapters follow a standard order: embryology; prenatal diagnosis (treatment); postnatal presentation; postnatal diagnosis; differential diagnosis; preoperative management; implications for anesthesia; surgical management; postoperative management, complications and other outcomes. Illustrated in black and white with tables, drawings, and photographs, the text includes hands-on guidelines to the nonoperative management of newborns with surgical conditions.

Book excerpt: From World Health Organization data, the prevalence of hearing impairment among infants varies between 0.5 and 3.0 cases per thousand, but in children hospitalised in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and in those with other risk factors (ie: anatomically small for gestational age, craniofacial abnormalities, intrauterine infections, family history of hearing loss, ototoxic drugs, mechanical ventilation , etc.), the prevalence is 10-20 times greater. Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) can be defined as an intensive care unit for sick newborns who need specialised treatment. NICU combines equipment and advanced technology with medical staff specially trained in newborn care. The Joint Committee on Infants Hearing (JCIH) identified many risk factors in NICU infants like prolonged mechanical ventilation, asphyxia, low birth weight and ototoxic medication, and so it also considers intensive care as a whole a risk factor. The present book focuses its attention on this hearing loss risk factor, starting from risk factors and screening strategies, highlighting the various neonatal levels of care, focusing on the treatment of infants with neural tube defects and the future motor development of premature babies. This should be done until caregivers can get the attention of drug therapies used in the NICU.

This edition includes discussions of contemporary topics of interest, such as informatics, genetics, global health, and family-centered care, which are vital to providers caring for neonates today. The case studies and the evidence-based practice dialogues at the end of each chapter provide great opportunities for further reflection. The book is useful to a wide audience in nursing, including undergraduate and graduate nursing students, practicing neonatal and pediatric nurses, and advanced practice nurses who care for neonates." Score: 92, 4 Stars.--Doody's Medical Reviews This 'classic' has been thoroughly updated to incorporate the most up-to-date research findings and strategies for providing cost-effective and evidence-based care. New chapters address emerging infections, the late preterm infant, and neonatal care from a global perspective. Included are updated neonatal care protocols and procedures, neuroprotective risk factors, new treatments, and new trends in developmental care. Text integrates the Institute of Medicine's (10M) five competencies, reflects the Affordable Healthcare Act and the Robert Wood Johnson and 10M report "The Future of Nursing." The text continues to provide neonatal care from a physiologic and pathophysiologic approach, with a major emphasis on nursing management at the bedside and advanced practice level. Each neonatal body system is presented, along with E-B interventions to assist in understanding the 'why' behind what is seen in the clinical area. Integrative management is threaded through the text along with extensive research findings to support practice strategies and rationales for sound clinical decision-making. Topics of recent interest include iatrogenic complications, neonatal pain, use of computers or other technology in neonatal care, and neonatal AIDS. Case studies enhance understanding of both common and rare neonatal conditions. This book is a celebration of life. As its name suggests, it demystifies the NICU experience, and provides reassurance for parents that these tiny, critically ill infants will typically grow to adulthood and lead normal healthy lives. "My Garden of Flowers" has three main areas of focus: the history of the NICU at Lancaster General Hospital from its founding through to 2017; family stories from 25 families who have had babies in the NICU sharing their experiences; and medical information and practical guidance for families who find themselves in the NICU, to demystify what's happening, and to help them to prepare for caring for their baby through childhood. This book is an invaluable resource for families who suddenly find themselves faced with the crisis of a baby in intensive care, totally unprepared, and not sure what to do. In addition to easy-to understand explanations of the medical jargon, the book provides reassurance for families that they are not alone, and emotional and practical support to prepare them for their role as NICU parents. The book includes a set of appendices with various charts, conversion tables, plus a glossary and an index.--Publisher.
