Book excerpt: This book investigates the Internet as a site of political contestation in the Indian context. It widens the scope of the public sphere to social media, and explores its role in shaping the resistance and protest movements on the ground. The volume also explores the role of the Internet, a global technology, in framing debates on the idea of the nation state, especially India, as well as diplomacy and international relations. It also discusses the possibility of whether Internet can be used as a tool for social justice and change, particularly by the underprivileged, to go beyond caste, class, gender and other oppressive social structures. A tract for our times, this book will interest scholars and researchers of politics, media studies, popular culture, sociology, international relations as well as the general reader.

Book excerpt: In Sri Aurobindo’s life was resurrected the vital essence of Karma Yoga, Jnana Yoga and Bhakti Yoga and through him the spirit of yoga came alive and was given back to us as his legacy of love for the heritage of India. --- Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s place in the pantheon of India’s freedom struggle is, by common consent, central and significant. By securing the integration of princely States within the Union of India, he became the principal architect of the new Indian State. He had ‘no-nonsense’ attitude to the issues before the nation. He was at once fair and firm, pragmatic and idealistic. His belief to liberal democratic principles was unswerving and unqualified. --- Netaji Subhas Bose displayed tremendous energy and organizational skill in recruiting, training and financing the Indian National Army. He gave them the inspiring call of ‘Jai Hind’ and ‘Dilli Chalo’. He was a doer as well as a thinker, and a fighter who never submitted to defeat. --- Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee was a national leader and statesman of exceptional calibre. He was a great patriot and an ardent votary, committed exponent and inspiring exemplar of the cause of India’s National Unity and National Integration. He lived and died for that cause. His contribution to the making of India’s Constitution of his understanding and the breadth of his national vision. --- Dr. Kalam has the capacity to ignite a million more minds. What a mind! All his speeches are cerebral and inspiring. He worked hard, selflessly and for long hours, led an austere life in an opulent palace. Simplicity, patriotism, equanimity rectitude are the hallmarks of Dr. Kalam.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: K.F. Rustamji, who was chief of the Madhya Pradesh police and later founder Director General of the Border Security Force (BSF), worked as the chief security officer of Prime Minister Nehru from 1952 to 1958. Rustamji maintained a diary right from the time he joined the service in 1938 and continued in it for more than three decades. He felt he was living in stirring times and the maintenance of a diary, wherein he recorded the news and his views in great detail, would help him to be more observant. P.V. Rajgopal has edited the material collected from 1,600 pages of Rustamji’s diaries pertaining to the period he was with Pandit Nehru and brought out a first-person narrative about one of India’s greatest sons of the last century. The day-to-day record, maintained by a man whose duty demanded he be close to Nehru, depicts the portrait of the subject captured though a close-up lens, as it were. Nehru himself said, in 1960, "I know Rustamji very well." And after a pause and an enigmatic smile added, "Rustamji also knows me very well." The book depicts, in a way, why Nehru paused and then smiled.
