Book excerpt: The content of Geometry with an Introduction to Cosmic Topology is motivated by questions that have ignited the imagination of stargazers since antiquity. What is the shape of the universe? Does the universe have and edge? Is it infinitely big? Dr. Hitchman aims to clarify this fascinating area of mathematics. This non-Euclidean geometry text is organized intothree natural parts. Chapter 1 provides an overview including a brief history of Geometry, Surfaces, and reasons to study Non-Euclidean Geometry. Chapters 2-7 contain the core mathematical content of the text, following the ErlangenProgram, which develops geometry in terms of a space and a group of transformations on that space. Finally chapters 1 and 8 introduce (chapter 1) and explore (chapter 8) the topic of cosmic topology through the geometry learned in the preceding chapters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focussing on the mathematics related to the recent proof of ergodicity of the (Weil–Petersson) geodesic flow on a nonpositively curved space whose points are negatively curved metrics on surfaces, this book provides a broad introduction to an important current area of research. It offers original textbook-level material suitable for introductory or advanced courses as well as deep insights into the state of the art of the field, making it useful as a reference and for self-study. The first chapters introduce hyperbolic dynamics, ergodic theory and geodesic and horocycle flows, and include an English translation of Hadamard's original proof of the Stable-Manifold Theorem. An outline of the strategy, motivation and context behind the ergodicity proof is followed by a careful exposition of it (using the Hopf argument) and of the pertinent context of Teichmüller theory. Finally, some complementary lectures describe the deep connections between geodesic flows in negative curvature and Diophantine approximation.

Book excerpt: The ICM 2010 satellite conference 'Geometry, Topology and Dynamics in Negative Curvature' afforded an excellent opportunity to discuss various aspects of this fascinating interdisciplinary subject in which methods and techniques from geometry, topology, and dynamics often interact in novel and interesting ways. Containing ten survey articles written by some of the leading experts in the field, this proceedings volume provides an overview of important recent developments relating to negative curvature. Topics covered include homogeneous dynamics, harmonic manifolds, the Atiyah Conjecture, counting circles and arcs, and hyperbolic buildings. Each author pays particular attention to the expository aspects, making the book particularly useful for graduate students and mathematicians interested in transitioning from other areas via the common theme of negative curvature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book employs oscillatory dynamical systems to represent the Universe mathematically via constructing classical and quantum theory of damped oscillators. It further discusses isotropic and homogeneous metrics in the Friedman-Robertson-Walker Universe and shows their equivalence to non-stationary oscillators. The wide class of exactly solvable damped oscillator models with variable parameters is associated with classical special functions of mathematical physics. Combining principles with observations in an easy to follow way, it inspires further thinking for mathematicians and physicists. Contents Part I: Dissipative geometry and general relativity theory Pseudo-Riemannian geometry and general relativity Dynamics of universe models Anisotropic and homogeneous universe models Metric waves in a nonstationary universe and dissipative oscillator Bosonic and fermionic models of a Friedman–Robertson–Walker universe Time dependent constants in an oscillatory universe Part II: Variational principle for time dependent oscillations and dissipations Lagrangian and Hamilton descriptions Damped oscillator: classical and quantum theory Sturm–Liouville problem as a damped oscillator with time dependent damping and frequency Riccati representation of time dependent damped oscillators Quantization of the harmonic oscillator with time dependent parameters

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains three expanded lecture notes from the program Scalar Curvature in Manifold Topology and Conformal Geometry that was held at the Institute for Mathematical Sciences from 1 November to 31 December 2014. The first chapter surveys the recent developments on the fourth-order equations with negative exponent from geometric points of view such as positive mass theorem and uniqueness results. The next chapter deals with the recent important progress on several conjectures such as the existence of non-flat smooth hyper-surfaces and Serrin's over-determined problem. And the final chapter induces a new technique to handle the equation with critical index and the sign change coefficient as well as the negative index term. These topics will be of interest to those studying conformal geometry and geometric partial differential equations.

Book excerpt: This paper is the second in a series dealing with the structure of the full isometry group I(M) for M a connected, simply connected, homogeneous, Riemannian manifold with non-positive sectional curvature. It is shown that every such manifold determines canonically a conjugacy class of subgroups of I(M) which act simply transitively on M. The class of all simply transitive subgroups of I(M) is identified and it is demonstrated that an arbitrary simply transitive subgroup may be modified slightly to produce a subgroup in the canonical class. The class of all connected Lie groups G for which there exists such a manifold M with G isomorphic to the identity connected component of I(M) is identified by means of a list of structural conditions on the Lie algebra of G. Given an arbitrary connected, simply connected Riemannian manifold M together with a given simply transitive group S of isometries, an algorithm is exhibited to explicitly compute the Lie algebra of I(M) from the transported Riemannian data on S.

Book excerpt: This book shows how dispersion engineering in two dimensional dielectric photonic crystals can provide new effects for the precise control of light propagation for integrated nanophotonics. Dispersion engineering in regular and graded photonic crystals to promote anomalous refraction effects is studied from the concepts to experimental demonstration via nanofabrication considerations. Self collimation, ultra and negative refraction, second harmonic generation, mirage and invisibility effects which lead to an unprecedented control of light propagation at the (sub-)wavelength scale for the field of integrated nanophotonics are detailed and commented upon.

Book excerpt: A description of the global properties of simply-connected spaces that are non-positively curved in the sense of A. D. Alexandrov, and the structure of groups which act on such spaces by isometries. The theory of these objects is developed in a manner accessible to anyone familiar with the rudiments of topology and group theory: non-trivial theorems are proved by concatenating elementary geometric arguments, and many examples are given. Part I provides an introduction to the geometry of geodesic spaces, while Part II develops the basic theory of spaces with upper curvature bounds. More specialized topics, such as complexes of groups, are covered in Part III.

Book excerpt: The work consists of two introductory courses, developing different points of view on the study of the asymptotic behaviour of the geodesic flow, namely: the probabilistic approach via martingales and mixing (by Stéphane Le Borgne); the semi-classical approach, by operator theory and resonances (by Frédéric Faure and Masato Tsujii). The contributions aim to give a self-contained introduction to the ideas behind the three different approaches to the investigation of hyperbolic dynamics. The first contribution focus on the convergence towards a Gaussian law of suitably normalized ergodic sums (Central Limit Theorem). The second one deals with Transfer Operators and the structure of their spectrum (Ruelle-Pollicott resonances), explaining the relation with the asymptotics of time correlation function and the periodic orbits of the dynamics.
