Book excerpt: Fluctuations in pseudorapidity of charged particle multiplicity from central (ZCAL) collisions of [sup 16]O+Cu at 14.6 A[center-dot]GeV/c have been analyzed by the E802 Collaboration using the method of normalized factorial moments as a function of the interval [delta][eta]. In agreement with previous measurements, an apparent power-law growth of moments with decreasing interval is observed down to [delta][eta] [approximately] 0.1. Experience with E[sub T] distributions suggests that fluctuations of multiplicity and transverse energy can be well described by Gamma or Negative Binomial Distributions (NBD) and excellent fits to NBD were obtained in all [delta][eta] bins. The [kappa] parameter of the NBD fit was found to increase linearly with the [delta][eta] interval, which due to the well known property of the NBD under convolution, indicates that the multiplicity distributions in adjacent bins of pseudorapidity [delta][eta] [approximately] 0.1 are largely statistically independent.

Book excerpt: Preliminary results on multiplicity distributions at [radical]s = 1800 GeV in the [eta] intervals [vert-bar] [eta] [vert-bar] [le] 2.5, 2.0, 1.5, 1.0, 0.5 are presented. The data were collected with a minimum bias trigger by the Collider Detector at Fermilab in two different runs. A small sample of data at [radical]s = 630 GeV was used for comparison with lower energy results and for checking on systematic effects. The multiplicity distributions at [radical]s = 1800 GeV deviate from the negative binomial distribution in rapidity intervals larger than [vert-bar] [eta] [vert-bar] [ge] 0.5. This confirms the trend already observed at [radical]s = 900 GeV where the deviation from the negative binomial starts at [vert-bar] [eta] [vert-bar]> 2.5.
