Book excerpt: Excerpt from One Hundred Year History of the North Carolina State Board of Medical Examiners, 1859-1959 All who have had the privilege of serving on the Board of Medical Examiners have been impressed by the hard work, the responsibilities, and the opportunities afforded to render real service to the citizens of the State. Many lasting friendships have been forged in this crucible of service. It has been interesting and touching to read the parting ideas and thoughts of the members, as recorded in the minutes, as they surrendered their positions at the termination of their terms. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sixth Annual Report of the State Board of Medical Examiners of New Jersey, 1896 Our present medical law meets the requirements of the times in an eminent degree, and some Of its provisions have been extensively copied throughout the country by a number of the thirty-nine States which maintain Examining Boards. It remains for the proper enforcement of the law to elevate the profession Of medicine in this State to a higher position than it has yet occupied, and to establish upon a broader basis its well-earned reputation for skill. The elevation of the standard of medical education will alone free our State from medical charlatans and impostors. It is not patent medicines, nor the medical quack, that the people want, but relief from their phys ical ailments. Thorough and long-continued medical training will best afford this, and the license of the State should be the guarantee to the public that its possessor is well qualified, by a thorough scien tific and practical medical education, to successfully conserve the public health. This is the more important since our State is situated between the two great educational centers, New York and Philadel phia, and hosts Of young practitioners, graduates of numerous med ical schools Of all grades, are constantly knocking at our doors. In selecting works for refer ence, care has been taken to choose those in most general use and of unquestioned authority. Book excerpt: Medical Licensing and Discipline in America traces the evolution of the U.S. medical licensing system from its historical antecedents in the 18th and 19th century to its modern structure. David A. Johnson and Humayun J. Chaudhry provide an organizational history of the Federation of State Medical Boards within the broader context of the development of America’s state-based system. As the national organization representing the interests of the individual state medical boards, the Federation has been at the forefront of developments in licensing, discipline, and regulation impacting the medical profession, medical education, and health policy within the United States. The narrative shifts between micro- and macro-level developments in the evolution of America’s medical licensing system, blending national context with state-specific and Federation initiatives. For example, the book documents such milestones as the national shift toward greater public accountability by state medical boards as evidenced by California’s inclusion of public members on its medical board, New Mexico’s requirement for continuing medical education by physicians as a condition for license renewal and the Federation’s policy development work advocating for both initiatives among all state medical boards. The book begins by examining the 18th and 19th century origins of the modern state-based medical regulatory system, including the reinstitution of licensing boards in the latter part of the 19th century and the early challenges facing boards, e.g., license portability, examinations, physician impostors, inter-professional tensions among physicians, etc. Medical Licensing and Discipline in America picks up the story of the Federation and its role in the major issue of licensing and discipline in the 20th century: uniformity in medical statute, evaluation of international medical graduates, nationally administered examinations for licensure, etc.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Charlotte Medical Journal, Vol. 29: A Monthly Journal of Medicine and Surgery; June-December, 1906 The modern tendency of Medicine, Mr. President, is toward materialism; we have no more right to deny the influences of the unseen, because they are beyond our ken, than we have to deny the Vital Principle in life; we understand neither, but we must believe the ample evidences of the existence of both. Their union makes up the sum of our being, and on both we are dependent. Ideals not only exist in men's minds, but they inspire their acts; since the world be gan the lives of heroes have led the people; the recorded deeds of great men; either real or mythical, whether in this world or in the spheres to which beliefs attached them, have been the signs which mark the paths we take; the darkest days of history are lit with beacon lights, which beam upon us yet, and in the days of myth, in pre-enlight ened times, whether the tales were of physi cal origin or whether they were songs by Which the wandering bards beguiled the weary hours, the old heroes that they sung about were to the people prototypes of honor and of wisdom, and even of iniquity; when Jove and Apollo were worshipped as gods, and The Fates human destinies spun; when the Cestus of Venus brought passion and war, and Valkyries beckoned the heroes home in the land of the mid-night sun. Then afterward when truth and legend met; when to the vices or the virtues of men were add ed the anger or the pleasure of the gods; when giant deeds were daily boasts 'and round each mighty life was wove a wreath of praise as fragrant now as when its leaves were fresh from laurel boughs; the day of early light, when visions of the saints made men believe in God; when lives revealed to us and simple acts of faith inspired the sac rifice and made the blind to see; the day not gone afar when our art was born; when from its myths and from its fallacies great men derived a grain of truth, which like a seed implanted in the ground has become a mighty tree. Through all these times ideals have led us; in all the logics and statecrafts; amid the good and wiles and wickedness of a restless world; some man living his life be fore us, or perhaps being one of us, has been the exemplar of that for which we strove; or if not one our type may have been a composite - the union of many virtues or of many vices, each existent in and distinguish ing one life; but whether of one or of many. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Medical Education: An Address Delivered Before the Harvard Medical Alumni Association, June 26, 1894 Your President was kind enough, in his note ask ing me to be present on this happy occasion, to pro pose thati should speak on the subject of Medical Education. It is possibly a well-worn theme, espe cially before you, who have such elaborate reports, and I am glad to say such encouraging reports, fromyear to year of the progress of this great School; but there are still some points of value, it seems to me, which we can consider here. I remember very well indeed, in the days of the elder Gross, hearing da' nansemn of medical education and the progress that we ought to have, bushels of talk and thimblefuls of action; but, after all, when you consider it, these discussions, though they led at that time to very meagre action, were not without their results, and great results, too. They were slowly leavening the whole lump of the profession. They gradually made the profession the support of all the progress that we have seen; and I am sure that the medical schools, even, I believe, Harvard University itself, would never have taken the remarkable steps in advance which have been taken in the last few years, were it not for that very constant talk, that very constant working of the leaven throughout the profession. [applause] I trust the profession. I trust them profoundly. They have ever been better in that re spect than the schools till of late. [applause] There has been certainly a remarkable wave of progress passing over this country in the matter of medical education in the last few years. It has been demonstrated, first of all, by the creation of State Boards of Health, and especially by the noble Illinois State Board of Health, a body which has done more for medical education than any other, I believe, in this country [applause], because it fixed an advancedstandard. These boards now have been established in almost all the States; and they have been followed by a still more notable advance, namely, the estab lishment of State Boards of Medical Examiners, wholly independent, as they ought to be, of the med ical schools themselves. Again, another very remark able indication is that our universities and colleges all over the land are establishing distinct courses leading up to those of the various professional schools, medi cine among them. And what does this mean but that the medical schools want better men, and that the colleges are going to furnish them? In addition to this, another important indication in the same di rection, which Dr. Langmaid has just alluded to, is the establishment for the first time of a section of Medical Pedagogics in connection with the Pan American Medical Congress. I hailed with great delight another similar indication in the programme of the American Surgical Association last month in Washington, on seeing that one of the leading papers by the distinguished gentleman who will address you later, our friend Dr. Billings, of Washington, was enti tled Methods of Teaching Surgery. It developed what to my mind was one of the most fruitful, and to me personally one of the most useful, debates that was held in that body.
