Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearest Neighbor (NN) classification is a non-parametric discrimination and classification technique. In NN classification a test item is compared by some similarity measure of its multiple variables (usually a distance metric) with all the items in a training set. The class of the item to which it is most similar can be used as an indication of the class of the test item. In other words, the test item is assigned the class of its nearest neighbor. A key extension is the case when k > 1 nearest neighbors (k-NN) are examined with the classification usually being made based on a plurality. NN classification is used in many fields, including for example the field of Pattern Recognition. Applications include tasks like speech recognition by a computer, medical data interpretation and diagnosis, or the interpretation of remote sensing imagery from satellites. Military applications of the technique include any situation were automated recognition is required. This thesis proposes two new NN rules that are intended to improve classification accuracy. The rules are tested against baseline classification methods in common use with a variety of data sets. One method shows improvement over the baseline methods in most of the data cases examined.

Book excerpt: This book presents reviewed and revised papers from the fifth and sixth DIMACS Implementation Challenge workshops. These workshops, held approximately annually, aim at encouraging high-quality work in experimental analysis of data structures and algorithms. The papers published in this volume are the results of year-long coordinated research projects and contain new findings and insights. Three papers address the performance evaluation of implementations for two fundamental data structures, dictionaries and priority queues as used in the context of real applications. Another four papers consider the still evolving topic of methodologies for experimental algorithmics. Five papers are concerned with implementations of algorithms for nearest neighbor search in high dimensional spaces, an area with applications in information retrieval and data mining on collections of Web documents, DNA sequences, images and various other data types.

This year, however, the forum was extended to include worldwide participation. The event has been held in the past in Mexico, Cuba, Brazil and Por- gal; it took place this year in Havana (Cuba). The aim of the congress was to promote and disseminate ongoing research into mathematical methods for pattern recognition, computer vision, image analysis, and speech recognition, as well as the application of these techniques in such diverse areas as robotics, industry, health, entertainment, space exploration, telecommunications, data mining, document analysis, and natural language processing and recognition to name a few. Moreover it was a forum for scienti?c re- arch, experience exchange, the sharing of new knowledge, and establishing contacts to improve cooperation between research groups in pattern recognition, computer vision and related areas. The congress was organized by the Institute of Cybernetics, Mathematics and P- sics of Cuba (ICIMAF) and the Center for Computing Research (CIC) of the National Polytechnic Institute of Mexico, and was sponsored by the University of La Salle, - xico, the University of Oriente, Cuba, the Polytechnic Institute “Jose ́ A.

Book excerpt: Intelligent information Retrieval comprehensively surveys scientific information retrieval, which is characterized by growing convergence of information expressed in varying complementary forms of data - textual, numerical, image, and graphics; by the fundamental transformation which the scientific library is currently being subjected to; and by computer networking which as become an essential element of the research fabric. Intelligent Information Retrieval addresses enabling technologies, so-called `wide area network resource discovery tools', and the state of the art in astronomy and other sciences. This work is essential reading for astronomers, scientists in related disciplines, and all those involved in information storage and retrieval.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twenty last years have been marked by an increase in available data and computing power. In parallel to this trend, the focus of neural network research and the practice of training neural networks has undergone a number of important changes, for example, use of deep learning machines. The second edition of the book augments the first edition with more tricks, which have resulted from 14 years of theory and experimentation by some of the world's most prominent neural network researchers. These tricks can make a substantial difference (in terms of speed, ease of implementation, and accuracy) when it comes to putting algorithms to work on real problems.
