Book Synopsis Accretion Power in Astrophysics by : Juhan Frank
Download or read book Accretion Power in Astrophysics written by Juhan Frank and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-01-17 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accretion Power in Astrophysics examines accretion as a source of energy in both binary star systems containing compact objects, and in active galactic nuclei. Assuming a basic knowledge of physics, the authors describe the physical processes at work in accretion discs and other accretion flows. The first three chapters explain why accretion is a source of energy, and then present the gas dynamics and plasma concepts necessary for astrophysical applications. The next three chapters then develop accretion in stellar systems, including accretion onto compact objects. Further chapters give extensive treatment of accretion in active galactic nuclei, and describe thick accretion discs. A new chapter discusses recently discovered accretion flow solutions. The third edition is greatly expanded and thoroughly updated. New material includes a detailed treatment of disc instabilities, irradiated discs, disc warping, and general accretion flows. The treatment is suitable for advanced undergraduates, graduate students and researchers.
Book Synopsis The Black Hole at the Center of the Milky Way by : Andreas Eckart
Download or read book The Black Hole at the Center of the Milky Way written by Andreas Eckart and published by Imperial College Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reviewing the fundamental instrumental techniques and current observational results, this book unveils the mysteries of the physical processes in the central parsec of our Milky Way: the super-massive black hole embedded in a central stellar cluster as well as the gas and dust in the circumnuclear region. The observations described cover the entire electromagnetic spectrum from decimeter radio-waves to high energy X-ray and ?-rays, and a comprehensive summary of up-to-date astrophysical interpretations is given. The emphasis is put on observational techniques, image processing aspects, and a detailed presentation of the most cutting-edge work carried out in the near-infrared wavelength regime. These recent results include both the first orbits of stars around the central black hole and the multiwavelength variability of the central source.

One hundred and ninety- four contributions present comparative studies on the data of the Milky Way and central regions of nearby galaxies. Included is information on galactic bulges, galactic center star clusters, star formation, starbursts, neutral ISM in the galactic center, molecular gas in the nuclei of galaxies, gas dynamics in the galactic center, the central parsecs of the milky way, magnetic and high-energy phenomena, black holes in galaxies, black hole in the galactic center, and black hole powering of AGN and jets. A sampling of topics: diffraction-limited IR speckle masking observations of the central regions of Seyfert galaxies, the stellar content of the Quintuplet cluster, and the structural characteristics of spiral bulges. Book Synopsis The Nature of the Far Infrared Radiation of the Galactic Center (7). by : James Lequeux
Download or read book The Nature of the Far Infrared Radiation of the Galactic Center (7). written by James Lequeux and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The strong far-infrared emission discovered at the galactic center by Hoffmann and Frederick (1968) is shown to be probably emission by dust particles; the large total mass of these particles suggests that the mass of the interstellar medium at the center of the Galaxy may be larger than indicated by the 21 cm line observations. Book Synopsis The Center of the Galaxy by : Mark Morris
Download or read book The Center of the Galaxy written by Mark Morris and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The investigation of the Galactic nucleus and its surroundings is necessarily a modem endeavor, for traditional observations made at visual wavelengths have not even begun to penetrate the veil of -30 magnitudes of visual extinction that intercedes. On the other hand, infrared, and especially radio observers find a relatively unobstructed view of the central portion of the Galaxy, so the study of this arena has proceeded apace with the development of these branches of astronomy. Thus, it is no accident that the first IAU sponsored conference to be held on the Galactic center is timed to coincide with the initiation, or the immediate aftennath, of major technical developments at long wavelengths, including infrared array detectors, millimeter-wavelength aperture synthesis, and self-calibration and refmed deconvolution algorithms in aperture synthesis radio astronomy. The center of the Galaxy is also accessible to X and gamma-ray observers, and progress at high energies has been steady, especially as imaging capabilities are being realized at X-ray wavelengths. However, one might expect that the revolution in the high energy domain is still ahead of us, as instruments with larger collecting areas and improved spatial resolution are now being developed. The youth of this subject is evidenced by the relatively small number of meetings that have been devoted to it.
