Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Striking at the very roots of fear and anxiety, bestselling authors Anderson and Miller reveal how readers can overcome their fears through the power of Jesus Christ. Even believers can let the normal concerns of life get blown out of proportion, becoming ensnared in worry and anxiety: What if something happens to my spouse? What if something were to happen to one of my children? What if this plane crashes? Uncovering the surprising scope of fear in the body of Christ and how many Christians who believe in the Lord’s care and love are being kept from God’s best by their fears, Freedom from Fear shows readers how to take back their lives. This eye-opening book examines the roots of worry and anxiety, such as fear of rejection, disapproval, failure, and the unknown. Readers will learn how fear-filled strongholds develop and discover the tools they need to tear down the prison walls. Reaching out to anyone crippled by worries, Anderson and Miller share how the fear of God dispels all unhealthy fears and leads believers to joyous freedom. Includes a 21-day devotional guide to help readers on their journey from fear to peace.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neal E. Miller's pioneering work in experimental psychology has earned him worldwide respect. This second in a two-volume collection of his work brings together forty-three of Miller's most important and representative essays on learning, motivation, and their physiological mechanisms. They were selected on the basis of their current relevance and their historical significance at the time they were published. In order to emphasize the main themes, essays on a given topic have been grouped together. Learning, Motivation, and Their Physiological Mechanisms begins when the author first discovered the thrill of designing and executing experiments to get clear-cut answers concerning the behavior of children and of rats. The first study was one of the earliest ones on the behavioral effects of the recently synthesized male hormone, testosterone. The second was one of the earliest studies demonstrating the value of using a variety of behavioral techniques to investigate the motivational effects of a physiological intervention. The next studies investigated the satisfying and rewarding effects of food or water in the stomach versus in the mouth and the thirst-inducing and reducing effects of hyper- and hypotonic solutions, respectively, injected into the brain. The last study describes a technique devised for extending the analysis of the mechanism of hunger to the effects of humoral factors in the blood. The study is completed with an examination of trial-and-error learning that was motivated by direct electrical stimulation of the brain and rewarded by the termination of such stimulation. Other studies show that the stimulation via such electrodes not only elicits eating, but also has the principal motivational characteristics of normal hunger. The conclusion deals with a series of experiments that overthrows strong traditional beliefs by proving that glandular and visceral responses mediated by the autonomic nervous system are subject to instrumental learning, which can be made quite specific. Neal E. Miller (1909-2002) was a professor of psychology at Yale University and professor and head of a laboratory of Physiological Psychology at the Rockefeller University. He is a past president of the American Psychological Association, an elected honorary fellow of the British Psychological Society, and chairman of the National Research Council Committee on Brain Sciences. He is co-author of four books and author of many articles.

Book excerpt: Hidden in your body is a set of thirty-five divine objects that represent aspects of God; think of them as a vocabulary to describe your soul. They can help you explore your own perfect nature. With roots in Platonic philosophy and Sufi metaphysics, these eternal body-forms were discovered forty years ago and are only now being shared with the world. They don't just provide knowledge and even wisdom; they also grant immediate and sustained relief from everyday suffering. Spiritual coach and writer Neal Allen describes the discovery, the body-forms themselves, and gives step-by-step instructions for encountering them yourself. His wife, the novelist and memoirist Anne Lamott, contributes a sweet foreword that chronicles her encounter with a body-form on their first date.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are you a good listener? How well do you really know the people around you? A capacity for empathic understanding is hard-wired in our brains, but its full expression involves particular listening skills that are seldom learned through ordinary experience. Through clear explanation, specific examples, and practical exercises, Dr. Miller offers a step-by-step process for developing your skillfulness in empathic listening. With a solid basis in sixty years of scientific research, these communication skills are not limited to professionals, and can be learned and applied in your everyday life. Instead of assuming that you know the meaning of what you think you heard, empathic listening lets you develop a more accurate understanding and prevent miscommunication. Empathic understanding can help to deepen personal relationships, alleviate conflict, communicate across differences, and promote positive change. The author also discusses skills for expressing yourself clearly, and for strengthening close relationships and friendships. Through empathic understanding you have access to life experience far beyond your own, and over time, listening well and deeply becomes a way of being, fostering a compassionate and patient acceptance of human frailties--those of others as well as your own.
