Book excerpt: Composite materials are being increasingly used as structural components because of their high strength-to-weight ratio. In fact, advanced structural composites are rapidly finding their way from aerospace applications into automotive, industrial, and consumer products. From a technical standpoint, advanced plastic matrix composites could easily replace metal or load-bearing components in structures in many consumer and industrial products. Composites offer some of the standard advantages of plastics processing. A number of parts can be grouped into one structure; the structure can be large, and secondary operations can be minimized. Composites can supply characteristics other than strength or rigidity; for instance, exceptional thermal oxidative stability, good bearing or wear characteristics, or electrical conductivity. However, current primary use is associated with the structural characteristics of composites.

This book was released on 1973 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A series of fiber reinforced composites were investigated to determine their tribological properties under unidirectional sliding motion. The composite formulations consisted of graphite fibers of varying properties and three resin matrices. The graphite fibers selected for study included Thornel 25, Thornel 40, and Thornel 50, and were fabricated into test panels utilizing an epoxy, a phenolic, and a polyimide resin. The resulting composite panels were used to provide friction and wear specimens of varying fiber orientation for evaluation in a dual rub-shoe test device with the composite block specimens sliding against a rotating metal specimen. Environmental test conditions selected for these evaluations consisted of evaluation in air at 75, 250 and 500 F under a speed of 600 rpm and a load of 50 pounds, sliding against a 440C STAINLESS STEEL BEARING SPECIMEN. Book excerpt: Composites Evaluation contains the proceedings of the Second International Conference on Testing, Evaluation and Quality Control of Composites-TEQC 87, held at the University of Surrey, UK on September 22-24, 1987. The papers review the physical and chemical properties of composites and the testing and evaluation of these materials. This monograph is comprised of 29 chapters split into nine sections, organized around the themes of nondestructive testing, fatigue testing, impact testing, processing-property relationships, acoustic emission, fracture, mechanical tests, and specialized test equipment and assessment of in-service behavior. The first chapter deals with the nondestructive testing of welds in continuous carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastics, while the second focuses on the use of an automated coin-tap technique for the nondestructive testing of composite structures. The chapters that follow explore hysteresis measurement for obtaining characteristic quantities during dynamic fatigue; real-time recording of impact experiments on composite laminates; the use of statistical methods for determining design data for advanced composite materials; and the strain dependence of elastic modulus in unidirectional composites. The final chapter describes a methodical approach for studying and predicting polymer fiber composite serviceability influenced by cold climate factors. This text will appeal to mechanical and structural engineers as well as materials scientists and technologists.

Book excerpt: This well-organized volume begins with a breakdown of the dynamic properties of composites and a complete look at various testing methods and data derived from each technique. Next is a discussion of wave motion in fiber-reinforced composites, including an investigation of effective modulus theory, an examination of wave motions in composite plates under impact loading, and a series of experimental studies conducted on inspected composite plates. The book then discusses non-destructive testing, including the applications and limitations of currently available non-destructive evaluation (NDE) techniques, and covers a variety of factors that affect the damage tolerance of composites. Important information on impact damage modeling, along with a classification of model types, is also presented.
