Book excerpt: The document reports the state of traffic calming programs in the United States. It also includes historical information about programs in other countries. For the purposes of this report, traffic calming involves changes in street alignment, installation of barriers, and other physical measures to reduce traffic speeds and cut-through volumes in the interest of street safety, livability, and other public purposes. This report focuses mainly on physical measures, including street closures and other volume controls under the traffic calming umbrella. Education and enforcement activities, such as neighborhood traffic safety campaigns, fall outside the umbrella but will be mentioned where relevant.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Introduction: Consider these two places: Walking into Green Acres, you immediately sense that you have entered an oasis-traffic noise left behind, negative urban distractions out of sight, children playing and running on the grass, adults puttering on plant-filled balconies. Signs of life and care for the environment abound. Innumerable social and physical clues communicate to visitors and residents alike a sense of home and neighborhood. This is a place that people are proud of, a place that children will remember in later years with nostalgia and affection, a place that just feels "good." Contrast this with Southside Village. Something does not feel quite right. It is hard to find your way about, to discern which are the fronts and which are the backs of the houses, to determine what is "inside" and what is "outside." Strangers cut across what might be a communal backyard. There are no signs of personalization around doors or on balconies. Few children are around; those who are outside ride their bikes in circles in the parking lot There are few signs of caring; litter, graffiti, and broken light fixtures indicate the opposite. There is no sense of place; it is somewhere to move away from, not somewhere to remember with pride. These are not real locations, but we have all seen places like them. The purpose of this book is to assist in the creation of more places like Green Acres and to aid in the rehabilitation of the many Southside Villages that scar our cities. This book is a collection of guidelines for the site design of low-rise, high-density family housing. It is intended as a reference tool, primarily for housing designers and planners, but also for developers, housing authorities, citizens' groups, and tenants' organizations-anyone involved in planning or rehabilitating housing. It provides guidelines for the layout of buildings, open spaces, community facilities, play areas, walkways, and the myriad components that make up a housing site.

Book excerpt: A multi-disciplinary approach to transportation planning fundamentals The Transportation Planning Handbook is a comprehensive, practice-oriented reference that presents the fundamental concepts of transportation planning alongside proven techniques. This new fourth edition is more strongly focused on serving the needs of all users, the role of safety in the planning process, and transportation planning in the context of societal concerns, including the development of more sustainable transportation solutions. The content structure has been redesigned with a new format that promotes a more functionally driven multimodal approach to planning, design, and implementation, including guidance toward the latest tools and technology. The material has been updated to reflect the latest changes to major transportation resources such as the HCM, MUTCD, HSM, and more, including the most current ADA accessibility regulations. Transportation planning has historically followed the rational planning model of defining objectives, identifying problems, generating and evaluating alternatives, and developing plans. Planners are increasingly expected to adopt a more multi-disciplinary approach, especially in light of the rising importance of sustainability and environmental concerns. This book presents the fundamentals of transportation planning in a multidisciplinary context, giving readers a practical reference for day-to-day answers. Serve the needs of all users Incorporate safety into the planning process Examine the latest transportation planning software packages Get up to date on the latest standards, recommendations, and codes Developed by The Institute of Transportation Engineers, this book is the culmination of over seventy years of transportation planning solutions, fully updated to reflect the needs of a changing society. For a comprehensive guide with practical answers, The Transportation Planning Handbook is an essential reference.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Manual has been developed to assist Bridge Owners by establishing inspection procedures And load rating practices that meet the National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS). The Manual has been divided into seven sections, with each section representing a distinct phase of an overall bridge inspection and load rating program. Section 1 contains introductory and background information on the maintenance inspection of bridges as well as definitions of general interest terms. Key components of a comprehensive bridge file are defined in Section 2. The record of each bridge in the file provides the foundation against which changes in physical condition can be measured. Changes in condition are determined by field inspections. The types and frequency of field inspections are discussed in Section 3 as well as specific inspection techniques and requirements. Conditions at a bridge site may require more elaborate material tests, and various testing methods are discussed in Section 4. Field load testing is a means of supplementing analytical procedures in determining the live load capacity of a bridge and for improving the confidence in the assumptions used in modeling the bridge. This is described in Section 5. Section 6 discusses the load rating of bridges and includes optional rating methods. The evaluation of fatigue and other special conditions are discussed in Section 7. The successful application of this Manual is directly related to the organizational structure established by the Bridge Owner. Such a structure should be both effective and responsive so that the unique characteristics and special problems of individual bridges are considered in developing an appropriate inspection plan and load capacity determination.

Approved as an alternate to the seismic provisions in the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications. Differs from the current procedures in the LRFD Specifications in the use of displacement-based design procedures, instead of the traditional force-based "R-Factor" method. Includes detailed guidance and commentary on earthquake resisting elements and systems, global design strategies, demand modeling, capacity calculation, and liquefaction effects. Capacity design procedures underpin the Guide Specifications' methodology; includes prescriptive detailing for plastic hinging regions and design requirements for capacity protection of those elements that should not experience damage.

Book excerpt: "Since the publication of the first edition of the Access Management Manual, the context for transportation planning and roadway design in the United States has been transformed. Transportation agencies and local governments are under growing pressure to integrate land use and transportation policy and achieve a more sustainable, energy-efficient transportation system. This second edition of the manual responds to these developments by addressing access management comprehensively, as a critical part of network and land use planning. The content is interdisciplinary, with guidance pertinent to various levels of government as well as to pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorized vehicles, including trucks and buses, and is strongly grounded in decades of research, engineering science, and professional experience. Greater emphasis is placed on appropriate location of access, and guidance is refined to provide appropriate consideration of context and community issues. Substantial updates aid state and local agencies in managing access to corridor development effectively. Specific guidance on network and circulation planning and modal considerations is included, as well as guidance on effective site access and circulation design. A chapter on corridor management reinforces these concepts with a framework for application of access management in different contexts, along with appropriate strategies for each context. There are also new chapters on network planning, regional access management policies and programs, interchange area access management, auxiliary lane warrants and design, and right-of-way and access control. The manual concludes with an extensive menu of access management techniques and information on their application"--Provided by publisher.
