Book Synopsis National Security and Human Health Implications of Climate Change by : Harindra Joseph Fernando
Download or read book National Security and Human Health Implications of Climate Change written by Harindra Joseph Fernando and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-01-06 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate change has been identified as one of the greatest threats to humanity of all times. In addition to producing adverse environmental conditions such as rising sea level, drought, crop failure, vector-borne diseases, extreme events, degradation of water/air quality and heat waves, climate change is also considered a threat multiplier that leads to local and international conflicts and armed interventions. Urban areas may bear the brunt of climate change, as they are the centers of human habitation, anthropogenic stressors and environmental degradation, and the ensuing health impacts are of grave societal concern. The papers in this volume span a suite of climate change repercussions, paying particular attention to national security and human health aspects. It is an outcome of a NATO Advanced Research Workshop held during April 28-30, 2011 in Dubrovnik, Croatia, sponsored by the NATO Science for Peace and Security Program. The contributions cut across the elements of modeling, natural, political and social sciences, engineering, politics, military intervention, urban planning, industrial activities, epidemiology and healthcare.

Book Synopsis Making Its Mark: Proceedings Of The 7th Ecmwf Workshop On The Use Of Parallel Processors In Meteorology by : Geerd-r Hoffmann
Download or read book Making Its Mark: Proceedings Of The 7th Ecmwf Workshop On The Use Of Parallel Processors In Meteorology written by Geerd-r Hoffmann and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1998-02-11 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The demand for greater computer power in numerical weather prediction and meteorological research is as strong as ever. The world meteorological community has tried to meet this demand by exploiting parallelism. In this field, the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts has established itself as the central venue for bringing together operational weather forecasters, climate researchers and parallel computer manufacturers to share their experiences through a series of workshops held every other year. This book reports on the latest workshop (2-6 December 1996) and is an excellent overview of the success which parallel systems have gained in meteorology worldwide, and how it was achieved. In addition, future trends in computer hardware and software development and its implications for meteorological computing are outlined.

Book Synopsis Large-Scale Scientific Computing by : Ivan Lirkov
Download or read book Large-Scale Scientific Computing written by Ivan Lirkov and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-11-29 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-conference proceedings of the 10th International Conference on Large-Scale Scientific Computations, LSSC 2015, held in Sozopol, Bulgaria, in June 2015. The 49 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 64 submissions. The general theme for LSSC 2015 was Large-Scale Scientific Computing with a particular focus on the organized special sessions: enabling exascale computation; control and uncertain systems; computational microelectronics - from monte carlo to deterministic approaches; numerical methods for multiphysics problems; large-scale models: numerical methods, parallel computations and applications; mathematical modeling and analysis of PDEs describing physical problems; a posteriori error control and iterative methods for maxwell type problems; efficient algorithms for hybrid HPC systems; multilevel methods on graphs; and applications of metaheuristics to large-scale problems.

Book Synopsis Southern Hemisphere Paleo- and Neoclimates by : Peter Smolka
Download or read book Southern Hemisphere Paleo- and Neoclimates written by Peter Smolka and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate models show that climate change is not a uniform process. Areas of increased temperature are situated near areas of decreased temperature, areas with increased precipitation adjoin areas of drought. This is one of the reasons why climate change is so difficult to detect. Any parameter must be considered and tested locally or regionally and not on an average globally. This book gives an overview of current research methods and results in the different fields of climate research including modelling. In addition, it contains a hemisphere-wide stratigraphic data base with about 80000 species. All paleoclimatic data as well as a state-of-the-art atmospheric circulation model in a PC version are included. So both research and graduate teaching are supported with high-end software running on affordable computers, also in those countries that have no access to Cray super computers. Thus, this book will be of interest to all researchers and scientists in the field of climatology.
