Book excerpt: This qualitative exploratory case study is focused on two small cohorts of African American male football-student athletes at the College of San Mateo participating in the Writing In The End Zone learning community. The participants who were students in remedial English and divided into academically "On-Track" and "Off-Track" cohort groups, were asked to identify what they believed were the facilitators and/or impediments to their academic success. The constant comparison methodology was utilized to determine similarities and dissimilarities in the perceptions of these two cohort groups. This research was critical because African American male community college student-athletes make up a large portion of the very vulnerable African American male community college population. African American male community college students in general have been consistently identified as having the lowest matriculation and graduation rates in the country. This study discovered that regardless of the cohorts' status academically, all of the participants identified themselves as football players first and students second. They all agreed that football was the reason they were even enrolled in college and both cohorts chose the same impediments and facilitators. They identified the impediments to their academic success as economic distress, poor academic preparation, difficulty balancing academics, football and other personal and family responsibilities, the perception of football as the way out of poverty, and consciousness of the negative stereotypes of African American males. The facilitators were identified as a strong dependency on support of coaches, teammates and teachers and family (mothers in particular), basic economic support, determination to succeed against all odds, and perceptions of football as the way out. This research was designed to tap into a previously unexplored area in community college research that revealed the rarely heard voice and perspectives of the African American male community college football-student athlete. This qualitative exploratory research serves as the foundation for the much needed future research on the African American community college student-athlete in general and African American male football-student athletes in particular.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Black male student-athletes are entering the California community college (CCC) system at an unprecedented rate. CCCs have become a repository for Black males that have aspirations of competing in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I member institutions. This historically disenfranchised subgroup of students is required by the NCAA to achieve higher academic standards than their non-athletic peers. While students who are not governed by the NCAA, such as general students, have the freedom to transfer to four-year universities at a pace that matches their skill level and personal commitments, student-athletes must transfer at an accelerated pace. The purpose of this study is to provide Black male student-athletes with the rare opportunity to voice their lived experiences at a CCC and to discover what is known from previous research about the experiences of Black male student-athletes, particularly those who are considered NCAA non-qualifiers. A basic qualitative interview approach was employed as a lens to gain a more meaningful understanding of how Black male athletes' experiences may promote and/or deter their graduation from a two-year college and transfer to a four-year college. The sample group included 14 Black male subjects at Crown Jewel City College (CJCC), a large, urban, and single district community college in Southern California. Purposeful sampling was conducted to form an information-rich environment that offered insightful answers to underscore the study. Eight major themes emerged that best describe experiences that may promote or deter graduation from a two-year college and transfer to a four-year college. Promoting themes included: embracing the CCC, faculty and academic support, time management, and grit, confidence, and motivation (GCM). Deterring themes included: negative perceptions, self-reliance, poor choices and decision making, and challenges and distractions. Alexander W. Astin's model of student involvement--the inputs, environment, and outputs associated with student development--was the theoretical framework employed to analyze the findings. Recommendations are provided for the NCAA, CCCAA, high school and college counselors, coaches, family members, policy makers, and key stakeholders. The aim of this study is to bring awareness to the social, environmental, and institutional factors that often lead to higher graduation rates and lower attrition rates for a subgroup that has been largely ignored in the past. Hopefully, the findings will inform and trigger the NCAA to create policies that better support all student-athletes while not penalizing underrepresented students as a result of their pre-college experiences.

On any given Saturday afternoon at majority-white institutions, the black athlete can be found entertaining not only their immediate white master, but their white masters in terms of the disproportionate number of white fans, including faculty, staff, and college administrators. This in itself has predated far too many black athletes to slavery and the conditions of modern-day slavery at the hand of athletics. Truly, sports in America today as we know it has psychologically damaged the black athlete.

Book excerpt: In 2004, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) adopted legislation that it hoped would help increase the graduation rates of student athletes. The Academic Progress Rating (APR), was designed to hold each individual athletic program accountable for keeping student athletes eligible and at the institution until the student athlete graduates. With this reform the NCAA attached land mark discipline measures for non compliance of the APR standards. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact that the APR has had on NCAA college football programs. Specifically, this study focused on assessing coaches' and directors of football operations' (DFOs) responses to questions regarding the issues of contention by football coaches and DFOs that lie within the APR legislation and how this legislation has changed their recruiting and retention strategies. The 234 DFOs and coaches that serve in that position at NCAA Division I institutions were chosen as subjects for this study. They were asked to complete a survey containing questions about how the APR has changed their program's recruiting and retention strategy. In addition, they were asked how the APR has affected their program's graduation rate, amount of resources they and their athletic department have dedicated to academics, and the amount of transfers they have coming into and leaving their program, due to the APR. These responses were then analyzed to see if there were any differences among BCS automatic bid conferences and non-BCS automatic bid conferences. The results indicated that there was no significant difference between BCS and non-BCS programs in terms of retention and recruiting strategies due to the APR legislation. However, results did indicate that 45.6% of Division I college football programs changed their recruiting strategy. Of the respondents, 56.3% are slightly less, less, or extremely less likely to recruit prospects that are potential discipline problems. In addition, 64.1% of football programs were slightly less, less, or extremely less likely to recruit academically challenged prospects. While 45.7% of programs said they were slightly less, less or extremely less likely to recruit special admittance prospects. In terms of retention, 48.6% of football programs indicated that they were slightly more, more, or extremely more likely to retain discipline problems due to the APR. When faced with a student athlete that has convicted a misdemeanor, 17.5% of football programs responded they were slightly more likely or more likely to retain the student athlete. Other results from this survey showed that 66% of football programs and 75.7% of athletic departments have increased either money or resources to their academic budgets because of the APR legislation. Responses also implied that 61.1% of football programs were slightly more likely, more, or were extremely more likely to monitor class attendance due to the APR legislation. The results also indicated that 83.5% of football programs feel they have graduated more student athletes since the inception of the APR. Additionally, 28.2% of football programs stated that they have more student athletes transferring out of their program than into the program.

African American male college students are also one of the most at-risk student populations on campus in regards to retention. They graduate at a lower rate than their white teammates. This study examines the graduation gap and employs theory as a lens to better understand the problem. I use the ecological systems theory (Bronfenbrenner, 1979) to help the reader understand how an athlete’s surroundings may have an effect on their action and motivation. I employ the self-determination theory (Deci, Vallerand, Pelletier, & Ryan, 1991) in terms of supporting intrinsic motivation. I analyze a program at a Division 1-A university that is meant to increase retention and GPA for football players to see whether African American student athletes are properly supported. Research has found that African Americans face different barriers than white student-athletes on predominantly white campuses. The results of this study can help athletic programs to create programming to better support their African American student athletes.
