Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nbs 50 Khz Phase Angle Calibration Standard The set of operating instructions for the Phase Angle Standard has been divided into two subsets; the Phase Calibration (normal) Mode and the Test (diagnostic) Mode. The first subset is almost identical with the operating instructions given in the diagnostic subset is designed to help with troubte-shooting procedures and provides more direct access to some of the hardware. The instruction set is more fully explained in chapter 3 below. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nbs Phase Angle Calibration Standard Nhi1e a comp1ete and meaningfu1 se1f - test of both digita1 and ana109 circuitry is a desirab1e goa1, it wou1d have added an unreasonab1e amount of comp11cat10ns both in hardware and software. However, some of the critica1 digita1 contro1 functions are tested in the present sys tem. During 1n1t1a1ization of the instrument, a cyc1ic redundancy pro cedure checks the integrity.of the program instructions and, more 1mportant1y, the correction tab1es which are a1so stored in read-on1y memory. A1so, during this procedure the identification number of the critica1 hardware modu1e, for which the correction tab1es are designed, is brief1y disp1ayed on the readout and thereby provides a visua1 check that the firmware and hardware modu1es are compat1b1e. At the end of the 1n1t1a1ization and se1f-check routine, rather than 1eaving the sys tem in its quiescent state, defau1t parameters are automatica11y entered. These provide a 1ow-1eve1, 1ow-frequency output of the Phase Standard that can be used for a quick visua1 check on an osc111oscope which assures the operator that the system is operating proper1y. Care has a1so been taken in the design to enab1e recovery of the system from externa11y-induced fau1ts, such as 1arge vo1tage spikes, which might interfere with the order1y execution of the operating pro gram. In many cases the system wi11 recover by itse1f, but recovery to the defau1t va1ues can a1ways be accomp1ished using the 'reset' contro1. Included are chapters relating to elemental concepts of precise time and frequency; basic principles of quartz oscillators and atomic frequency standards; historical review, recent progress, and current status of atomic frequency standards; promising areas for developing future primary frequency standards; relevance of frequency standards to other areas of metrology including a unified standard concept; statistics of T/F data analysis coupled with the theory and construction of the NBS atomic time scale; an overview of T/F dissemination techniques; and the standards of T/F in the USA. The Monograph addresses both the specialist in the field as well as those desiring basic information about time and frequency. The authors trace the development and scope of T/F technology, its improvement over periods of decades, its status today, and its possible use, applications, and development in days to come.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Weighing in on the growth of innovative technologies, the adoption of new standards, and the lack of educational development as it relates to current and emerging applications, the third edition of Introduction to Instrumentation and Measurements uses the authors’ 40 years of teaching experience to expound on the theory, science, and art of modern instrumentation and measurements (I&M). What’s New in This Edition: This edition includes material on modern integrated circuit (IC) and photonic sensors, micro-electro-mechanical (MEM) and nano-electro-mechanical (NEM) sensors, chemical and radiation sensors, signal conditioning, noise, data interfaces, and basic digital signal processing (DSP), and upgrades every chapter with the latest advancements. It contains new material on the designs of micro-electro-mechanical (MEMS) sensors, adds two new chapters on wireless instrumentation and microsensors, and incorporates extensive biomedical examples and problems. Containing 13 chapters, this third edition: Describes sensor dynamics, signal conditioning, and data display and storage Focuses on means of conditioning the analog outputs of various sensors Considers noise and coherent interference in measurements in depth Covers the traditional topics of DC null methods of measurement and AC null measurements Examines Wheatstone and Kelvin bridges and potentiometers Explores the major AC bridges used to measure inductance, Q, capacitance, and D Presents a survey of sensor mechanisms Includes a description and analysis of sensors based on the giant magnetoresistive effect (GMR) and the anisotropic magnetoresistive (AMR) effect Provides a detailed analysis of mechanical gyroscopes, clinometers, and accelerometers Contains the classic means of measuring electrical quantities Examines digital interfaces in measurement systems Defines digital signal conditioning in instrumentation Addresses solid-state chemical microsensors and wireless instrumentation Introduces mechanical microsensors (MEMS and NEMS) Details examples of the design of measurement systems Introduction to Instrumentation and Measurements is written with practicing engineers and scientists in mind, and is intended to be used in a classroom course or as a reference. It is assumed that the reader has taken core EE curriculum courses or their equivalents.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in engineering precision have tracked with technological progress for hundreds of years. Over the last few decades, precision engineering has been the specific focus of research on an international scale. The outcome of this effort has been the establishment of a broad range of engineering principles and techniques that form the foundation of precision design. Today’s precision manufacturing machines and measuring instruments represent highly specialised processes that combine deterministic engineering with metrology. Spanning a broad range of technology applications, precision engineering principles frequently bring together scientific ideas drawn from mechanics, materials, optics, electronics, control, thermo-mechanics, dynamics, and software engineering. This book provides a collection of these principles in a single source. Each topic is presented at a level suitable for both undergraduate students and precision engineers in the field. Also included is a wealth of references and example problems to consolidate ideas, and help guide the interested reader to more advanced literature on specific implementations.
