Book Synopsis GPS Declassified by : Richard D. Easton
Download or read book GPS Declassified written by Richard D. Easton and published by Potomac Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2013-10-01 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: GPS Declassified examines the development of GPS from its secret, Cold War military roots to its emergence as a worldwide consumer industry. Drawing on previously unexplored documents, the authors examine how military rivalries influenced the creation of GPS and shaped public perceptions about its origin. Since the United States’ first program to launch a satellite in the late 1950s, the nation has pursued dual paths into space—one military and secret, the other scientific and public. Among the many commercial spinoffs this approach has produced, GPS arguably boasts the greatest impact on our daily lives. Told by the son of a navy insider—whose work helped lay the foundations for the system—and a science and technology journalist, the story chronicles the research and technological advances required for the development of GPS. The authors peek behind the scenes at pivotal events in GPS history. They note how the technology moved from the laboratory to the battlefield to the dashboard and the smartphone, and they raise the specter of how this technology and its surrounding industry affect public policy. Insights into how the system works and how it fits into a long history of advances in navigation tie into discussions of the myriad applications for GPS.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite-based navigation system that was originally designed for the U.S. military. However, the number of civilian GPS users now exceeds the military users, and many commercial markets have emerged. This book identifies technical improvements that would enhance military, civilian, and commercial use of the GPS. Several technical improvements are recommended that could be made to enhance the overall system performance.
Book Synopsis Server-side GPS and Assisted-GPS in Java by : Neil Harper
Download or read book Server-side GPS and Assisted-GPS in Java written by Neil Harper and published by Artech House. This book was released on 2010 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Assisted GPS (A-GPS) is a technology that greatly enhances GPS performance and capabilities. This innovative book offers you a detailed explanation of the way that an A-GPS server operates from a practical point of view. You learn how A-GPS improves critical aspects of GPS, such as time-to-first-fix (TTFF) and yield. The book focuses on handset-assisted A-GPS, where the server can make use of additional information and perform more effective hybrid calculations. You gain insight into factors affecting accuracy and how these errors can be minimized using A-GPS. Moreover, this unique resource includes example code in Java for all key functions, along with sequence diagrams in UML that help ensure a solid understanding of the material. CD-ROM Included! Contains valuable Java source code and example applications that illustrate key points throughout the text. Complete class and sequence diagrams are also provided where applicable.

Book Synopsis Statistics, Testing, and Defense Acquisition by : National Research Council
Download or read book Statistics, Testing, and Defense Acquisition written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-08-17 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Panel on Statistical Methods for Testing and Evaluating Defense Systems had a broad mandate-to examine the use of statistics in conjunction with defense testing. This involved examining methods for software testing, reliability test planning and estimation, validation of modeling and simulation, and use of modem techniques for experimental design. Given the breadth of these areas, including the great variety of applications and special issues that arise, making a contribution in each of these areas required that the Panel's work and recommendations be at a relatively general level. However, a variety of more specific research issues were either brought to the Panel's attention by members of the test and acquisition community, e.g., what was referred to as Dubin's challenge (addressed in the Panel's interim report), or were identified by members of the panel. In many of these cases the panel thought that a more in-depth analysis or a more detailed application of suggestions or recommendations made by the Panel would either be useful as input to its deliberations or could be used to help communicate more individual views of members of the Panel to the defense test community. This resulted in several research efforts. Given various criteria, especially immediate relevance to the test and acquisition community, the Panel has decided to make available three technical or background papers, each authored by a Panel member jointly with a colleague. These papers are individual contributions and are not a consensus product of the Panel; however, the Panel has drawn from these papers in preparation of its final report: Statistics, Testing, and Defense Acquisition. The Panel has found each of these papers to be extremely useful and they are strongly recommended to readers of the Panel's final report.
