Now that most states have accepted the CCSS, they need to first understand the CCSS and then design a way to implement the CCSS in mathematics. This third title in series discusses the rigor of the standards; reviews learning progressions; defines practice standards, and focuses on developing mathematical problems to create higher math development. Volume one is Navigating Implementation, volume two is English Language Arts and volume four is Assessment and Collaboration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Implementation of previous U.S. standards-based education initiatives has been challenging due to, among other issues, the lack of common and consistent meaning of 'proficiency' among states. Implementing new education standards for educators means undertaking actions to understand the skills to be taught, develop curriculum, make curriculum more accessible to students, and effectively assess the skills being taught. This single-site qualitative collective case study investigated how three secondary in-service teachers and one secondary student teacher navigated implementation of the Common Core State Standards in a Midwestern rural secondary school. The study is grounded in Hall, Wallace, and Dossett's (1973) Concerns-Based Adoption Model that I use in the context of the Common Core State Standards educational reform. The teachers' shared experiences demonstrated their stages of concern with the Common Core initiative, their levels of use of the standards, and their configurations of the Common Core. Findings indicate that implementation of education initiatives is a complex process which is dependent upon multiple components. Teachers described their perceptions of the Common Core State Standards and how they adapted and implemented the standards in their context. The findings of the current study have far-reaching implications for people concerned with or interested in the U.S. K-12 education system such as school principals, other education administrators and leaders, classroom teachers, researchers, and policymakers.

Book excerpt: Mathematics educators have long recognised the importance of helping students to develop problem-solving skills. More recently, they have searched for the best ways to provide their students with the knowledge encompassed in the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). This volume is one in a series from NCTM that equips classroom teachers with targeted, highly effective problems for achieving both goals at once. The 44 problems and tasks for students in this book are organised into the major areas of the high school Common Core: algebra, functions, geometry, statistics and probability, and number and quantity. Examples of modelling, the other main CCSS area, are incorporated throughout. Every domain that is required of all mathematics students is represented. For each task, teachers will find a rich, engaging problem or set of problems to use as a lesson starting point. An accompanying discussion ties these tasks to the specific Common Core domains and clusters they help to explore. Follow-up sections highlight the relevant CCSS Standards for Mathematical Practice that students will engage in as they work on these problems. This book provides high school mathematics teachers with dozens of problems they can use as is, adapt for their classrooms, or be inspired by while creating related problems on other topics. For every mathematics educator, the books in this series will help to illuminate a crucial link between problem solving and the Common Core State Standards.

Book excerpt: Smart implementation of the Common Core State Standards requires both an overall understanding of the standards and a grasp of their implications for planning, teaching, and learning. This Quick-Start Guide provides a succinct, all-in-one look at * The content, structure, terminology, and emphases of the Common Core standards for English language arts and literacy at the high school level. * The meaning of the individual standards within the four ELA strands--Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening, and Language. * How the standards connect across strands, grade bands, and content areas to help students develop the communication and analytical skills essential for college and career readiness. * The areas of the ELA standards that represent the most significant changes to business as usual. Here, teachers and school leaders will find information they need to begin adapting their practices to ensure all students master the new and challenging material the standards present. A practical lesson planning process to use with the Common Core, based on Classroom Instruction That Works, 2nd Ed., is included, along with three sample lessons. LEARN THE ESSENTIALS OF THE COMMON CORE The grade-level and subject-specific Quick-Start Guides in the Understanding the Common Core Standards series, edited by John Kendall, are designed to help school leaders and school staffs turn Common Core standards into coherent, content-rich curriculum and effective, classroom-level lessons.

Book excerpt: At Cherry Lake Publishing, our authors and editors are passionate about giving kids robust, engaging, and challenging materials that will prepare them to flourish in the multimedia Information Age. The implementation of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) calls on educators to refresh and sharpen their skills in reading, writing, math...and research! Research in the Internet Age creates new challenges for search, comprehension, synthesis, and creation skills. In Navigating the Information Tsunami: Engaging Research Projects that Meet the Common Core State Standards, K-5, we've created our first book geared directly at teachers, administrators, and librarians. Expert practitioners in research pedagogy share their best tips and lessons in nearly 20 projects that invite students to think deeply, weigh choices, make decisions, and articulate them in digital or print projects. With an eye toward the how and not merely the what of quality research for emerging readers and young scholars, our contributors provide detailed guidance on how teachers can harness students' natural curiosity to go beyond fact-gathering and exceed CCSS expectations. From launching the lesson to comprehension checkpoints to the final summative assessment, we're here to help.
