Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Booker Prize-winning author Barry Unsworth's first novel, published for the first time in the United States. Foley and Moss are partners in a successful small business, making plaster pixies for the tourist trade. Foley is the artistic member of the partnership; he thinks up the ideas and designs and has pretensions to even greater artistry in his cherub lamps and fixtures. Moss, the seemingly quiet one who supplied the capital for the venture, manufactures them. Barry Unsworth sets his scene magnificently—a Cornish village, Lanruan, thriving on specious tourism, and its local characters: Graham, the primitive painter; Bailey, the loud-mouthed Northerner who comes to Lanruan to make his fortune; Barbara, the nearest thing the village possesses to a bad girl; and above all Gwendoline, who, inadvertently, begins the rift in the partnership between Foley and Moss. The Partnership is a disquieting, darkly funny tale about hidden desires and the unspoken attachments we have for one another.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of the British Musical provides a comprehensive academic survey of British musical theatre offering both a historical account of the musical's development from 1728 and a range of in-depth critical analyses of the unique forms and features of British musicals, which explore the aesthetic values and sociocultural meanings of a tradition that initially gave rise to the American musical and later challenged its modern pre-eminence. After a consideration of how John Gay's The Beggar's Opera (1728) created a prototype for eighteenth-century ballad opera, the book focuses on the use of song in early nineteenth century theatre, followed by a sociocultural analysis of the comic operas of Gilbert and Sullivan; it then examines Edwardian and interwar musical comedies and revues as well as the impact of Rodgers and Hammerstein on the West End, before analysing the new forms of the postwar British musical from The Boy Friend (1953) to Oliver! (1960). One section of the book examines the contributions of key twentieth century figures including Noel Coward, Ivor Novello, Tim Rice, Andrew Lloyd Webber, director Joan Littlewood and producer Cameron Macintosh, while a number of essays discuss both mainstream and alternative musicals of the 1960s and 1970s and the influence of the pop industry on the creation of concept recordings such as Jesus Christ Superstar (1970) and Les Misérables (1980). There is a consideration of "jukebox" musicals such as Mamma Mia! (1999), while essays on overtly political shows such as Billy Elliot (2005) are complemented by those on experimental musicals like Jerry Springer: the Opera (2003) and London Road (2011) and on the burgeoning of Black and Asian British musicals in both the West End and subsidized venues. The Oxford Handbook of the British Musical demonstrates not only the unique qualities of British musical theatre but also the vitality and variety of British musicals today.

It’s the universe helping to move things along in the right direction so that Griffin Thorne can discover me. I have to confess—I’ll do whatever it takes to make that happen. Confession #1: I may have overhead that he was in search of a nanny. What can I say? My brother has a big mouth. Confession #2: It’s possible I helped along the assumption that I had nanny experience. Hey, babysitting my nieces and nephew counts, right? Confession #3: There’s a good chance I oversold my qualifications. But my Grandma Dori backed me up, so it’s not completely my fault. And it worked. He hired me. Only for me to find out that he left the business. I guess it’s on to Plan B. When he accidentally overhears me singing, I expect nothing from him. Then he asks to work with me on a song for our town’s Founder’s Day Parade and it feels like a dream come true. Until... Confession #4: I’ve fallen for him.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a deadly code of conduct that operates beyond the boundaries of the everyday. It's a world where anger, strength, and terrifying ferocity must be controlled with total precision and perfect timing. It is an art known to only a few. In this unique project, Kate Kray has met such men and talked to them on their own ground. They have opened up to her, told her their stories--the hunger and poverty they have endured as kids with crime and violence on every street corner, a world where it's a thin line between survival and the cold slab in the city mortuary. With integrated photographs, the portraits of these men reveal not only their awesome and terrifying presence, their power and brutal strength, but their underlying humanity and dignity too. The result of this collaboration is a revelation--portraits in words and pictures of tough guys who are smooth, loaded, and hard as rock. Men who have gone to the brink, and have survived to turn their lives around to tell their tale.

How can so many different people find themselves drawn together and become friends? What is it about this dog that makes people love him, whether they want to or not? Bailey is a city dog brought to the country, and he finds that it suits him better. Before long he’s roaming the woods and fields of the Hill, making friends everywhere that he goes. Wherever he visits he finds sadness and grief, but when he leaves, people’s lives are changed forever. Whether it’s the old man who lives alone or the grieving widow who looks for happiness in a bottle of wine, Bailey comes into their lives and shakes it up, making them better people just because he’s there. Each person believes they are the only ones that Bailey visits, but just how long will it be until he gets caught? And what will happen when everyone learns the truth? Based on the life adventures of a real dog, “The Secret Life of Yellow Dog” is a tale of love, acceptance, and understanding as people collide and clash, all over a single dog.

Book excerpt: The advent of the internet and the availability of social media and digital downloads have expanded the creation, distribution, and consumption of Black cultural production as never before. At the same time, a new generation of Black public intellectuals who speak to the relationship between race, politics, and popular culture has come into national prominence. The contributors to Are You Entertained? address these trends to consider what culture and blackness mean in the twenty-first century's digital consumer economy. In this collection of essays, interviews, visual art, and an artist statement the contributors examine a range of topics and issues, from music, white consumerism, cartoons, and the rise of Black Twitter to the NBA's dress code, dance, and Moonlight. Analyzing the myriad ways in which people perform, avow, politicize, own, and love blackness, this volume charts the shifting debates in Black popular culture scholarship over the past quarter century while offering new avenues for future scholarship. Book excerpt: Using a collection of over one thousand popular songs from the war years, as well as around 150 soldiers’ songs, John Mullen provides a fascinating insight into the world of popular entertainment during the First World War. Mullen considers the position of songs of this time within the history of popular music, and the needs, tastes and experiences of working-class audiences who loved this music. To do this, he dispels some of the nostalgic, rose-tinted myths about music hall. At a time when recording companies and record sales were marginal, the book shows the centrality of the live show and of the sale of sheet music to the economy of the entertainment industry. Mullen assesses the popularity and significance of the different genres of musical entertainment which were common in the war years and the previous decades, including music hall, revue, pantomime, musical comedy, blackface minstrelsy, army entertainment and amateur entertainment in prisoner of war camps. He also considers non-commercial songs, such as hymns, folk songs and soldiers’ songs and weaves them into a subtle and nuanced approach to the nature of popular song, the ways in which audiences related to the music and the effects of the competing pressures of commerce, propaganda, patriotism, social attitudes and the progress of the war.
