Book excerpt: This book is set in central Indian forests, largely in Madhya Pradesh—the torch bearer of wildlife management in our country—that also has relevant reference to the forests of Vidarbha region of the neighbouring Maharashtra. The book has arrived as a breath of fresh air and candour at a time when some of the wild animals, specifically the leopards and tigers, in the present context are being viewed by the ill-informed and uncaring section of the society as inimical to the lives of people. While incidents of strife are usually reported from rural India, some of the urban sprawls that fail to rein in their poorly planned expansion across the existing forested tracts on their doorstep, which has been the case of the MP state capital Bhopal, are no exception. While painting the lives of wild creatures with delicate strokes of an artist’s brush, the pages, without breaking stride, deal with men who have wrested as large slices of the natural areas as possible from being lost to the relentless march of ‘development,’ encroachments, and other human activities. There are lessons in the highest levels of conservation leadership without hiding the soft belly of the onerous tasks. There is narrative of large predators in trouble—leopards and tigers; of the local extinction of the large-hearted gentleman, the tiger—so christened by the redoubtable Jim Corbett—in Panna Tiger Reserve a decade ago and the tiger’s remarkable resurrection in the very same area. Of daring experiments, investigations, innovations, and establishment of field-based skills, all carried to their logical conclusion—success. The reader is placed right in the middle of the action! What is more, there is no hiding of problems and some failures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of this study of Romans has served in the ministry for over sixty years. He served as pastor of churches in Mississippi and Alabama. He also served as Missionary Associate for the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention as professor and principle of the Barbados Theological Collage, Barbados, West Indies. This study comes out of over forty years of preaching and teaching from Paul's Book of Romans. Ponder These Questions In Your Heart. As a Christian, do you sometimes feel incomplete, insufficient, insignificant, unworthy and unable to live as you desire? At your best do you feel you are a failure and at your worse you are just no good? Do you feel that the things you do are never satisfying to you and are unworthy of God's approval? Do you sometimes feel the person you are as a husband, wife, mother, father, neighbor, Christian worker is never good enough? Your heart's cry is, "Oh, I wish I could be a better husband, wife, parent, Christian." Are you at times able to say, "I do know some victory, some joy, some peace, but my defeats and despairs are greater than I believe they ought to be? Have you tried and tried but you are always failing, ending up empty? You may at times feel like the fellow who said, "I am sick and tired of being sick and tired." If these express your feeling, then you know what Paul was feeling when he said, "Who can deliver me from this death" (Romans 7:25). If your answer to these question is Yes, this study is especially for you.

However, given the complexity of life, it is often difficult to discern which choice to make, where our responsibilities lie, or what the consequences of an action (or of a nonaction) will be. In The Moral Disciple Kent Van Til surveys the skills and dispositions that we need to address moral issues responsibly. This basic introduction to Christian ethics the systematic evaluation of morality highlights the centrality of Christ and the Christian faith in moral formation, and it offers an ethical framework to guide Christians as they engage a host of moral dilemmas, including those surrounding wealth, sexuality, and the end of life. Using easy-to-read prose and defining terms carefully, Van Til provides an accessible introduction to this crucial and practical subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disciple. Beyond Mediocrity addresses the problem of mediocrity found in many churches that are locked into the status quo. In this book Dr. Byrne portrays the life of a disciple in strict accordance with what the scriptures teach and as an essential element in the renewal of our faith before the Lord returns At the heart of Dr. Byrne's examination is the question of mediocrity as it has plagued churches and Christians without number. Dr. Byrne exposes the nature of mediocrity and on that foundation builds his study of a disciple whose life can be beyond mediocrity. Dr. Byrne explores the seven characteristics of being a disciple based on the Lord's own words. Denying oneself, taking up his cross, following the Lord, forsaking attachments to all he has, abiding in His word, bearing much fruit, and loving one another. Central to his study of the life of a disciple are the twin spiritual skills; living by faith and living in the Spirit, with the subject that is central to both; being able to hear what the Spirit is saying to the churches. Dr. Byrne then presents his readers with a step by step instruction on how to live by faith, and includes a memorable parable that reflects his own relationship with the Lord; the Garden of My Heart. The final part of the book takes a leap into the future with Dr. Byrne exploring four events in the life of a disciple in the end of days: being caught up to meet the Lord in the air and being transformed in a brief moment of time into His immortal image; giving account at the judgment seat; the marriage of the bride of Christ with the Lord; and the return of the Lord to the earth, with His transfigured disciples, to reign with Him for a thousand years. The book concludes with an examination of the destiny of the Lord's disciples in the New Jerusalem that descends to the earth at the end of time. There can be no doubt that Dr. Byrne knows what he is writing about. Each chapter bears the distinctive stamp of personal knowledge and experience. This book should be required reading for all Christians, for those who lead churches, and for those who train leaders in colleges and universities round the world.

Book excerpt: Becoming a True Disciple: The Revolution of Spirit-Led Disciples of Christ shares the experiences and insights of Dr. Stephen L. Gray. He recounts his journey as a follower of Jesus Christ who heard, heeded, and acted on God's calling to become a missionary. He followed that summons and traveled to the coastal regions of Tanzania and Kenya in East Africa. There he worked as a witness to Jesus Christ, sharing the gospel so that others might become disciples led by the Holy Spirit. The narrative and reflection in Becoming a True Disciple leads the reader to contemplate topics like being a disciple, spiritual growth, the Holy Spirit, a devotional life, prayer, honoring God's word, renewing the mind, creating a spiritual environment, faith, and joining in Christ's Great Commission. Becoming a True Disciple: The Revolution of Spirit-Led Disciples of Christ resists falling into the trap of trying to teach discipleship as a process that one may implement.
