Half way across the two animal trails were aug meated by two more, - the big footprints of two men. From all appearances, the trail was getting warm and would soon terminate. Sure enough, it did, - at the stone wall bounding the farther side of the field. Here a large pile of stones (pulled from the wall but, as usual, not re placed) showed where bunny had taken refuge from his f our - legged pursuer, only to be pulled out by the two - legged ones. From this spot two pairs of shoe prints and one hound - trail led away as the owners went off in search of more game. Go where he will, the naturalist will find a wealth of material awaiting him. This book is not in any sense a Natural History, - it is merely an "awakener" to bring to the attention of those who like to ramble in field and wood, the many absorbingly interesting things that await the investigator. There is nothing that will so develop the senses of perception and the powers of observation as the study of the hosts of animate and inanimate things that abound everywhere. I have often taken country walks with people who certainly must miss more than half the joys of such outings. The song of a Scarlet Tanager directly overhead attracted not a single glance; the angry chipperings of a squirrel were unheard; the beautiful canary-like song of the Indigo Bunting might just as well not have been sung as far as my companion was concerned; even the scare and surprise at the thunderous noise of a Ruffed Grouse that flushed from almost under foot did not interest him enough to notice the nest-full of eggs that she had left. While such things are not all-important, it would appear to me that a person alive enough to note the common things that were happening about him would be better able to cope with any situation in life that might occur, than one blind to them. I believe every boy and every girl should be educated to know the common birds, flowers, mammals, insects, etc. I think it will not be a very distant day when this recreative-study will be a regular part of every school course, even as it is now in a great many. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Young Folks' Nature Field Book The plan of this work contemplates a short, timely nature story, or seasonable hint for every calendar day in the year, telling the reader just what time in the successive seasons to look for the different birds, beasts, flowers, etc., how to recognize and study them when taking observa tion walks for pleasure or instruction. Recogni tion of dierent creatures, etc., is assisted by nu merous excellent illustrations, and alternate pages are left blank for reader's notes or record of things seen. A yearly report so kept, either by a single young person or a small group or club, cannot fail to be a source of continuous interest not only while being made but after its comple tion. A club competing for the best and complete record so made should produce pleasure and ih struction throughout the yea r. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Nature and Country Life Most of us, I believe, have far more chances of living with Nature and of trying to under stand the meaning and beauty of the world around us than we are at all able to profit by. We have eyes but we do not see, we have ears but we do not hear, and so we go through life, missing half the pleasures that have been pre pared for us, and understanding but a small part of what we do not miss. Let us therefore try to learn while we may, how to make good use of our time. The best way to begin is to go out into the country for a little while and look about us, and then, when we have remembered and thought over what we have seen, go again to find out if the things we notice are still there and look the same as they did before. Some of the ones we saw at first will have altered and new ones will have appeared. By going out at different times of the day and different seasons of the year we shall soon know what there is to be seen. This is the way in which artists and poets study the world, and find out a great deal more about it than most of us will ever do. They will not perhaps spend much time in the fields, but they will see a great deal, and remember some special part of what they have seen. They have this wonderful gift of observation. More over, they can afterwards tell us what they have seen, and can put down the meaning of it to them in colours or in words for us to study. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Woodland, Field and Shore: Wild Nature Depicted With Pen and Camera Makes it smile and speak and Open its heart to us, Mr. Pike does for universal 'nature. With light and pleasant touches he shows its beauty in all its varying aspect-s, throughout the changing seasons; for though he does not dwell on the winter, he assigns a chapter to the passing of it, and does not. Let it pass without disclosing its peculiar charm. He loves all that God has made, and has found it well worth while to spend hours at a time inpatiently watching, and accurately recording, the doings of some of the humblest denizens of wood land, field, and shore. The birds are his peculiar delight, and before we have read many pages we are in love both with them and with him. We can fully sympathise with-his eagerness to get a shot at them - with his camera. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Study of Nature The teacher is the trained individual set by experience to accomplish, by the quickening processes Of method and principle, the speediest orderly comprehension in each individual of the richest inheritance of thought that the race has treasured for its legitimate heir, the child. The teacher studies the time element in the educational process. He is conscious of the need for such an elimination of non-vital elements in the data of the school as will bring the learner in the briefest time to the highest mental development and to the posses sion of a fairly varied and extended field of facts. The teacher also studies the mental complex of each learner, and ascertains how this varies in the several learners and in the several stages of growth in each learner. This knowledge, combined with relatively full under standing Of the subject matter to be taught, enables him to bring the learner speedily and surely into his best estate. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies of Trees IN presenting this volume, the author is aware that there are several excellent books, dealing with one phase or another of tree life, already before the public. It is believed, how ever, that there is still need for an all-round book, adapted to the beginner, which gives in a brief and not too technical way the most important facts concerning the identification, structure and uses of our more common trees, and Which considers their habits, enemies and care both when grow ing alone and when growing in groups or forests. In the chapters on the identification of trees, the aim has been to bring before the student only such characters and facts as shall help him to distinguish the tree readily during all seasons of the year. Special stress is laid in each case on the most striking peculiarities. Possible confusion with other trees of similar appearance is prevented as far as possible through comparisons with trees of like form or habit. Only such information is given concerning the structure and requirements of trees as will enable the reader better to understand the subsequent chapters. In the second half of the book, practical application is made of the student's general knowledge thu's acquired, and he is acquainted with the fundamental principles of planting, care, forestry, wood identification and nature study. The author recognizes the vastness of the field he is attempting to cover and the impossibility of even touching. Nature, I have selected such views as afl'ord me the most pleasure, endeavoring by my manner of presenting them to inspire the reader with the same agreeable sensations. I have aimed, not so much to make a graphic picture of any scene from which a painter might with his brush or pencil obtain a copy on canvas, as, on the other hand, to make the reader feel as he would in the presence of it. I have also confined my descriptions to ordi nary scenes. These alone have been my study. The objects that meet our view in our walks outside of any village in the country, the beauty of a plain cottage and its picturesque in mates, with their baskets of whortleberries and their bundles of dried herbs, and the common trees and shrubs of the forest and the wayside, form the subjects of my essays. From them I have studied the oracles of nature, and in these pages I have given their interpretations as I understand them.
