Este último alimentado com base na crença da infinitude do progresso humano, pelo extraordinário desenvolvimento econômico, industrial e científico a consubstanciar-se nas propostas das várias versões do positivismo e do pragmatismo, geradas no seio da corrente realista que sempre permeou a criação artística e literária, com variações que vão de um objetivismo radical à tentativa de objetivar a subjetividade. Assim, era natural que o naturalismo fosse colher na biologia, na medicina, na psicologia, na sociologia e nas outras ciências alguns de seus conceitos fundamentais que, grosso modo, enquadraram, sem que se possa falar em determinação, suas produções. Todavia, levando a extremos seus ideologemas demarcadores, ele se expôs à dura crítica de seus opositores que, em média, acusaram-no de desconsiderar os mais altos e nobres valores estéticos e morais da sociedade. Não obstante, seu impiedoso bisturi crítico e suas escandalosas criações, na mimese de arte, exerceram enorme influência não apenas na França de origem, já que, transpondo fronteiras e oceanos, a visão de mundo e o modus faciendi naturalistas espalharam-se pela Europa e pelos quatro cantos do globo. Um dos principais motores/mentores dessa expansão foi, sem dúvida, Émile Zola, o escritor que com mais rigor e militância incorporou e expressou esse ideário em sua vasta obra romanesca, ensaística e dramatúrgica, cujo impacto falou pela pena e pela escritura de inúmeros autores em diferentes culturas, línguas e países.

Book excerpt: This book sheds light on the most philosophically interesting of contemporary objects: the cell phone. “Where are you?”—a question asked over cell phones myriad times each day—is arguably the most philosophical question of our age, given the transformation of presence the cell phone has wrought in contemporary social life and public space. Throughout all public spaces, cell phones are now a ubiquitous prosthesis of what Descartes and Hegel once considered the absolute tool: the hand. Their power comes in part from their ability to move about with us—they are like a computer, but we can carry them with us at all times—in part from what they attach to us (and how), as all that computational and connective power becomes both handy and hand-sized. Quite surprisingly, despite their name, one might argue, as Ferraris does, that cell phones are not really all that good for sound and speaking. Instead, the main philosophical point of this book is that mobile phones have come into their own as writing machines—they function best for text messages, e-mail, and archives of all kinds. Their philosophical urgency lies in the manner in which they carry us from the effects of voice over into reliance upon the written traces that are, Ferraris argues, the basic stuff of human culture. Ontology is the study of what there is, and what there is in our age is a huge network of documents, papers, and texts of all kinds. Social reality is not constructed by collective intentionality; rather, it is made up of inscribed acts. As Derrida already prophesized, our world revolves around writing. Cell phones have attached writing to our fingers and dragged it into public spaces in a new way. This is why, with their power to obliterate or morph presence and replace voice with writing, the cell phone is such a philosophically interesting object.

Book excerpt: This book examines the artistic policies of the Italian Communist Party (PCI) during the early post-war years (1944–1951), after the defeat of Fascism in Europe and the outbreak of the Cold War. It brings together theoretical debates on artists’ political engagement and an extensive critical apparatus, providing the reader with an historical framework for wider reflections on the relationship between art and politics. After 1944, the PCI became the biggest Communist organisation in the West, placing Italy in an ambiguous position regarding the other European countries. Nevertheless, the immediate strategy of the Communists was not revolution, but liberation from Fascism and the establishment of a democratic system from which a genuine Italian path to Socialism could be found. Taking Antonio Gramsci’s notion of hegemony as a theoretical basis, the Communists intended to generate a progressive social bloc capable of achieving wide consensus within civil society before taking power. In order to accomplish this goal, the collaboration from intellectuals was necessary. The artistic policy of the Italian Communist Party was tailored to this end, counting on representatives from all groups and tendencies of the time, particularly those artists who rejected the imperialistic, autarchic pseudo-classicism that characterised most of Italian art throughout the Fascist years. In the 1930s, international, Modernist and cosmopolitan European culture became an escape route to artists seeking a way out of the oppressive cultural atmosphere of inter-war Italy. However, in the 1940s and 1950s, many of these artists experienced a deep transformation in their work after they became politically involved with the PCI, and were exposed to international Communist culture – and Socialist Realism in particular. This was conveyed not only by conscious changes in their subjects, their style and their material means of expression, but also in the public they addressed and in their own conception of themselves as artistic authors. Hence, at a time when the world was divided into two opposed camps, each heavily inflected by ideological allegiance and supported by powerful propaganda apparatuses, Italian Communist artists became the protagonists of a novel intellectual-political project which pursued the synthesis between antagonistic cultural blocs.
