Attempting to find ways of preventing such conflicts, the study addresses the role of the state and its development policies, militarization, the impact of the world economic crises, the role of modern science and technology, human rights, and cultural survival. Reviewing the strategies employed by the various countries to maintain their access to marine and land-based natural resources, the book also suggests alternatives for resolving the conflicts at local, national, and international levels.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through a multi-disciplinary approach, this volume studies the management and settlement of conflict and disputes in East Asia. Conflict and disputes exist everywhere in human society. The management and settlement of them has become an imperative. This volume is a significant contribution to a broader understanding of the complexities involved in managing and settling disputes and conflicts at regional, inter-state and intra-state levels in the East Asian region. Drawing on expertise in Peace and Conflict, International Relations, and International Law the volume presents to the reader a general picture of how conflict can be managed at the international and regional levels through various mechanisms, in particular, through prominent regional organizations such as ASEAN. It then moves on to case studies at the regional level including inter-state and intra-state conflicts and disputes. The last part of the volume highlights how states resolve their maritime disputes. This has drawn much attention from the international community due to various factors such as the increasing demand for natural resources from the oceans. These disputes disrupt the smooth development of international relations as well as trigger tensions and confrontation between states.

Book excerpt: Natural Resource Management in South Asia deals with the problems in the management of natural resources in South Asia, and tries to work towards building a collective approach for addressing those problems. It raises reasonable concerns and queries the manner in which developmental polices are implemented, without undermining the importance of the economic development process. Examined in detail from a people-centric view, the topics in this volume include energy, land, biodiversity, water and the atmosphere. There is also a separate chapter on Afghanistan that focusses on the challenges faced by the country in this regard. The volume makes an effort to examine options to ensure food and water security in South Asia, and to suggest an alternative policy framework in ensuring a sustainable environment. It also suggests ways in which natural resources can be utilized for the maximum benefit of the people.

Book excerpt: Redefining Diversity and Dynamics of Natural Resources Management in Asia, Volumes 1-4 brings together scientific research and policy issues across various topographical area in Asia to provide a comprehensive overview of the issues facing the region. Sustainable Natural Resources Management in Dynamic Southeast Asia, Volume 1, pulls together regional experts in the field to look specifically at sustainability issues across the region, to see what has been implemented, what the impacts have been, and what other options are available. In the race to be a developed region, many Southeast Asian countries have foregone natural resources through haphazard use. As a result, the people are faced with numerous environmental challenges, particularly deforestation and forest degradation, biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation, reduction in soil quality, and decreases in the quantity of available water. Community-based forest management is the involvement of local communities in the protection, conservation and management of public forests to prevent degradation through sustainable practices while still responding to the basic social and economic needs of local populations. When the people who depend on forest resources for their livelihoods are jointly responsible for managing and protecting them, they tend to do so in a more sustainable manner by focusing on the long-term benefits rather than the immediate short-term gains. However, when tenure rights are weak, unclear, or insecure, or offer limited benefits, people are incited in extracting more immediate benefits, resulting in suboptimal forest management and the reduction of carbon stocks. Features case studies that cover issues such as rising levels of deforestation, forest degradation, regional food security, ecosystem degradation, biodiversity loss, conflicts over natural resource use, water management issues, and impacts on local communities Includes contributions from local researchers who are dealing with these issues first hand, and on a daily basis Includes a comparative review on REDD+ implementation in different communities Focuses on sustainability issues across the region

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This material was originally published as three chapters in the book (now out of print) of the same name. The book examines a representative range of conflicts of land and resources in Southeast Asia, and standards and laws that the international community has devised which could be relevant to their resolution. It emphasises in particular relevant standards concerning human rights and environmental protection. This excerpt contains the Introduction, the chapter by Catherine Iorns on international law, and the book's Conclusion. The Introduction outlines the then current conflicts over land and resources in Southeast Asia, factors which lead to their internationalisation, the relevance of international laws, and the analytical framework that the various contributors in the book use in order to discuss the conflict case studies. The chapter on international law outlines the international legal framework in relation to ownership and use of land and resources within states. It discusses state sovereignty and limitations on it that are relevant to the matters raised in the book. It discusses the rights of indigenous peoples to land and resources, as conflict over these was a feature common to several of the case studies. It also discusses relevant aspects of international environmental law. The Conclusion utilises the analytical framework to make comments across the case studies about the levels at which disputes arise and the use of international dispute resolution mechanisms. It makes comments about the relevance and utility of international law for such disputes. And it makes suggestions for non-violent action at national and international levels for prevention and resolution of such domestic conflicts.

First, it surveys trends in interstate peace and conflict in both Southeast Asia and South America in order to illustrate the puzzle at the heart of this book: the long, but conflictual peace of each region. The second section explores existing accounts of this reality, highlighting the role of state power, regional organizations, and norms and in culture in shaping regional relations"--

Book excerpt: Redefining Diversity and Dynamics of Natural Resources Management in Southeast Asia, Volumes 1-4 brings together scientific research and policy issues across various topographical areas in Asia to provide a comprehensive overview of the issues facing the region. Upland Natural Resources and Social Ecological Systems in Northern Vietnam, Volume 2, provides chapters on natural resource management in northern Vietnam tied together by the concept that participatory local involvement is needed in all aspects of natural resource management. The volume examines planning for climate change, managing forestland, alleviating food shortages, living with biodiversity, and assessing the development projects and policies being implemented. Without the involvement of local communities, households, and ultimately individual people, the needed action will not be effectively taken. Upland Natural Resources and Social Ecological Systems in Northern Vietnam, Volume 2, goes beyond just Northern Vietnam to address the issue of transboundary natural resource management-an issue that Vietnam is dealing with in its relations with northern neighbor, China, and western neighbor, Laos-as well as the transboundary water governance between Pakistan and India in south Asia, with the hope that some of the lessons learned may one day be useful in the case of Vietnam and its neighbors.
