This book was released on 1995 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lake Okeechobee is considered to be the «liquid heart» of the interconnected Kissiee River / Lake Okeechobee / Everglades ecosystem of south Florida, USA. This large (1732 square km) shallow lake (mean depth 2.7 m) is vital natural resource; it provides flood protection and water supply and serves as a recreation area for more than 3,5 million people. A diverse littoral region occupies 25 an important habitat for economically important fish and wildlife stocks, including several endangered species. Human activities in the latter part of this century have deteriorated the quality of the Lake Okeechobee ecosystem. Diffuse inputs of nutrients (mainly from cattle ranching and diary operations to the north) have doubled the phosphorus concentration of the lake water between 1970 and 1980. Excess nutrient loading has been the cause of an increased frequency and intensity of blue-green algal blooms -- a signal of lake eutrophication. Surface scums with unpleasant odors as an obvious sign of declining water quality have heightened public concerns and led to the formation of committees and advisory groups to provide recommendations for lake protection and recovery. The water quality monitoring programs were supplemented with a substantial research program. In the wake of the algal blooms in the 1980s several interdisciplinary research projects were initiated, including a study of the lake's phosphorus dynamics, a watershed phosphorus transport and retention study, and a study of the lake's ecosystem. The present volume presents the results of the Lake Okeechobee ecosystem study. The ecosystem study, along with the results of other studies, has provided a scientific foundation for better resource management decisions and has increased our understanding of Lake Okeechobee and subtropical lakes in general.

This book was released on 2012-06-05 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Environmental Protection Agency's estimate of the costs associated with implementing numeric nutrient criteria in Florida's waterways was significantly lower than many stakeholders expected. This discrepancy was due, in part, to the fact that the Environmental Protection Agency's analysis considered only the incremental cost of reducing nutrients in waters it considered "newly impaired" as a result of the new criteria-not the total cost of improving water quality in Florida. The incremental approach is appropriate for this type of assessment, but the Environmental Protection Agency's cost analysis would have been more accurate if it better described the differences between the new numeric criteria rule and the narrative rule it would replace, and how the differences affect the costs of implementing nutrient reductions over time, instead of at a fixed time point. Such an analysis would have more accurately described which pollutant sources, for example municipal wastewater treatment plants or agricultural operations, would bear the costs over time under the different rules and would have better illuminated the uncertainties in making such cost estimates.

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Hydrology and Water Resources written by Reginald W. Herschy and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1998-07-31 with total page 793 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fresh water supplies of the Earth are finite and as the world's population continues to grow humanity's thirst for this water seems unquenchable. Intense pressure is being exerted upon freshwater resources and a lack of adequate clean water is seen as one of the most serious global problems for the 21st century. Indeed it has been said that the next war will be fought over water, not oil. Human health and the health of supporting ecosystems increasingly depends upon our ability to find, control, manage and understand water. In a single volume, The Encyclopedia of Hydrology and Water Resources provides the reader with a comprehensive overview and understanding of the diverse field of hydrology. The intimate inclusion of material on water resources emphasizes the practical applications of this field, applications which are indispensable in any modern approach to the subject. This volume is a vital reference for all hydrologists, hydrogeologists and water engineers worldwide, whether they are concerned with the exploitation of new sources of water, the protection and management of existing reserves, or the science of surface water and groundwater flow. 114 eminent scientists from 17 countries worldwide have contributed to this authoritative volume. Superbly illustrated throughout, it includes almost 300 entries on a range of key topics, including arid and semi-arid zones, climates and climate change, floods and droughts, desertification, entropy, flow measurement, groundwater, hydrological cycle, hydrological models, infiltration, karst hydrology, paleohydrology, precipitation, remote sensing, river pollution prevention, rivers, lakes and seas, satellite hydrology, soil erosion, water treatment, water use, weather radar, and world water balance.

Book Synopsis Approaches for Ecosystem Services Valuation for the Gulf of Mexico After the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill by : National Research Council
Download or read book Approaches for Ecosystem Services Valuation for the Gulf of Mexico After the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2012-03-17 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On April 20, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon platform drilling the Macondo well in Mississippi Canyon Block 252 (DWH) exploded, killing 11 workers and injuring another 17. The DWH oil spill resulted in nearly 5 million barrels (approximately 200 million gallons) of crude oil spilling into the Gulf of Mexico (GoM). The full impacts of the spill on the GoM and the people who live and work there are unknown but expected to be considerable, and will be expressed over years to decades. In the short term, up to 80,000 square miles of the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) were closed to fishing, resulting in loss of food, jobs and recreation. The DWH oil spill immediately triggered a process under the U.S. Oil Pollution Act of 1990 (OPA) to determine the extent and severity of the "injury" (defined as an observable or measurable adverse change in a natural resource or impairment of a natural resource service) to the public trust, known as the Natural Resources Damage Assessment (NRDA). The assessment, undertaken by the trustees (designated technical experts who act on behalf of the public and who are tasked with assessing the nature and extent of site-related contamination and impacts), requires: (1) quantifying the extent of damage; (2) developing, implementing, and monitoring restoration plans; and (3) seeking compensation for the costs of assessment and restoration from those deemed responsible for the injury. This interim report provides options for expanding the current effort to include the analysis of ecosystem services to help address the unprecedented scale of this spill in U.S. waters and the challenges it presents to those charged with undertaking the damage assessment.
