Photon production processes are particularly important in astrophysics, since almost all of our knowledge of distant astronomical objects comes from the detection of radiation from these sources. Further, the conditions therein are extremely varied and a wide variety of naturally occurring electromagnetic phenomena can be described by limiting forms of the basic theory. The first chapter reviews some basic principles that are the underpinnings for a general description of electromagnetic phenomena, such as special relativity and, especially, relativistic covariance. Classical and quantum electrodynamics (QED) are then formulated in the next two chapters, followed by applications to three basic processes (Coulomb scattering, Compton scattering, and bremsstrahlung). These processes are related to other phenomena, such as pair production, and the comparisons are discussed. A unique feature of the book is its thorough discussion of the nonrelativistic limit of QED, which is simpler than the relativistic theory in its formulation and applications. The methods of the relativistic theory are introduced and applied through the use of notions of covariance, to provide a shorter path to the more general theory. The book will be useful for graduate students working in astrophysics and in certain areas of particle physics.

S. Presman, has reviewed not only the extensive Russian literatur!;"l, but also al most equally comprehensively the non-Russian literature, dealing with biological influences of these fields. Treated also is literature shedding some light on possible theoretical foundations for these phenomena. A substantial, rapidly increaSing number of studies in many laboratories and countries has now clearly established bio logical influences which are independent of the theoretically pre dictable, simple thermal effects. Indeed many of the effects are produced by field strengths very close to those within the natural environment. The author has, even more importantly, set forth a novel, imaginative general hypothesis in which it is postulated that such electromagnetic fields normally serve as conveyors of information from the environment to the organism, within the organism, and among organisms. He postulates that in the course of evolution or ganisms have come to employ these fields in conjunction with the well-known sensory, nervous, and endocrine systems in effecting coordination and integration.

Book excerpt: This volume in its first part reproduces the treatises and papers wherein Professor H. A. Lorentz developed the electromagnetic theory of phenomena in moving systems up to the point achieved in the relativity theory of uniform translations. We have not included the article in the Encyclopaedie der mathematischen Wissenschaften, Vol. V, number I4, nor the book 'Theory of Electrons', for reasons given previously. The second part of the volume contains the work on the theory ot gravitation. In the early development of the theory the author lays stress on the hypothesis of the stagnant ether, and he so firmly believes in the validity of his formula for the ponderomotive force on electric charges, that he is even prepared to abandon the momentum conservation law (see p. 28). It was Max Abraham who in I903 reconciled Lorentz's formula for the force with the conservation law by interpreting the term at fault as the representation of electromagnetic momentum per unit volume of the field, thus meeting the criticism of Henri Poincare. This interpretation was readily taken over by Lorentz. Again, referring to the transformation formula tor the time variable, Professor Lorentz preferred to think 0/ 'local time' as a mathematical auxiliary. A dmitting and even stressing the impossibility of discrimin ating experimentally between local time and absolute time, he never relinquished the belief that the latter words might have a meaning after all.
