Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Should Negritude be seen as a movement that originated at the end of the colonial era and merits no further study in this contemporary world? This is one of the questions explored in the Colloquium held at the University of the West Indies, Barbados, to mark the centenary of the birth of Léopold Sedar Senghor. In a recent study, Césaire et Senghor: Un pont sur l’Atlantique, Lylian Kesteloot reminds her readers of the importance of Negritude which contributed to the emergence of African literature between 1930 and 1960. The idea of essentialism which the word Negritude implies, as well as the opposite idea of universalism, will be widely discussed in the pages of this work. This collection of essays acknowledges the essential shortcomings of Senghor’s Negritude, but, at the same time, underlines the fact that in Senghor’s words, “Negritude is a myth” and therefore has to do with the construction of (an) identity and is the expression of an imaginary creation. It envisaged, for example, the creation of an African form of socialism within a unique interpretation of Marxism. In this volume, African and Caribbean writers who are concerned with contemporary issues, demonstrate the vitality of Negritude as a poetic, philosophical and literary movement and as an ideological response to oppression that is still relevant in its presentation of cultures. Clearly, it is necessary to go beyond the notion of race implied in the term and to focus on the cultural, philosophical and aesthetic elements in order to appreciate the relevance of Negritude today. Most notably in the Caribbean or Brazil, Negritude has been transformed into original ideological and aesthetic projects.

Book excerpt: "O Lord, thank you. Thank you, for delivering the baby safely. I was afraid we would not make it to a place of shelter. I am so grateful that Mary can now find a few moments of rest. These last days have been so difficult for her." -- from "Joseph Ponders" (Advent 3) "Jesus Reflects" is a book of eight dramatic monologues on the Advent/Christmas theme, coupled with a children's sermon with each monologue. The series begins with Thanksgiving and concludes with Epiphany Sunday. Edward G. Hunter writes that the monologues enable the worship to "be there" at the event. Some of the monologues grew out of Sunday morning or evening services where an attempt was made to present a different approach to the Christmas season. Sample chapter titles include: - A Shepherd Returns - The First christmas Tree - Mary Remembers - Simeon Recalls - A Brand New Page Edward G. Hunter, Irvine, California, is a retired United Methodist minister. He served pastorates in Pennsylvania and California. Hunter holds a bachelor of sacred theology degree from Temple University School of Theology and a doctor of ministry degree from Claremont School of Theology.

Book excerpt: Solidly rooted in the biblical story, gifted with creative imagination, and acutely aware of issues faced by people today, Pastor Jacqueline Sharer Robertson brings women of the Bible to life in ways that strengthen our relationships with God and one another. These sermons will inspire preachers to greater creativity and imagination. George G. Carlson Bishop, South-Central Synod of Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Church in America Turn ordinary sermons into memorable occasions with this set of 20 dramatic monologues that can be used by female pastors, lay speakers, or other worship leaders. Women In The Wings highlights the role of women in the Christian story, as scripture passages are brought to life and interpreted by the women who were there. Each monologue tells the story of a biblical character, or of someone who might have witnessed the biblical narrative unfold. Women In The Wings provides a user-friendly approach to communicating the gospel through drama -- each thought-provoking monologue comes with theological reflections ("Making It Preach") plus staging instructions and performance tips ("Making It Play") that makes it accessible for anyone. And this material isn't just for use in worship -- it's also great for women's retreats or as discussion starters for Bible study. If you let the women in these monologues share the pulpit with you, together you'll preach the Word in fresh and meaningful ways. Robertson brings together her experience as an actor with her years as a pastor to create narratives which ring true to life. Sophisticated understandings of scripture, theology, and human nature are expressed in simple, natural language. At the same time, careful and critical attention to the biblical text and engaging communication of the gospel give these monologues integrity. Ruth Duck Professor of Worship Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary Jacqueline Sharer Robertson is the pastor of Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church in Mt. Horeb, Wisconsin. She previously served congregations in Illinois and Wisconsin, and has also been a writer, performer, and community organizer. Robertson holds degrees from Illinois Wesleyan University (B.F.A. in musical theatre) and Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary (M.Div.).

Book excerpt: This complete set of seasonal material offers everything you need for an exciting Advent and Christmas program. With dramatic monologues, sermons, children's messages and worship liturgies, a Sunday school program, and a pair of Christmas Eve candlelight services, there's something for everyone, whatever your congregation's size or worship style. An Unlikely Cast (Alan E. Siewert) is a set of dramatic monologues that reveal the inner thoughts and feelings of five characters who were deeply involved in the unfolding divine drama of the nativity: Joseph, Mary, John the Baptist, the innkeeper, and a shepherd. The monologues can be used in midweek Advent services, special programs, or Sunday morning worship. Staging and costuming suggestions are included, to help you bring these exciting accounts to life. The Colors Of Christmas (H. Michael Nehls) is a creative series of six sermons and children's messages in which each week features a different color. The sermons use the color idea to stress such Christian themes as royalty, sacrifice, and holiness, while the children's messages utilize the inventive device of passing out ribbon swatches of the color of the day; as the youngsters receive the various ribbons, they can collect a "ribbon rainbow." Is This The Road To Bethlehem? (Judy Gattis Smith) is an Advent worship liturgy in which children are the main participants. The centerpiece is an "action/sermon" featuring six brief readings using illustrative wooden figures. All the elements of a typical worship service are present -- but in a manner that focuses on the interests and expressions of children, allowing them to experience worship rather than just listen and watch. Producing Christmas (Jennifer Hockenberry Dragseth) is a humorous children's play which casts the Christmas story as the ultimate Hollywood blockbuster. Everyone wants to be a part of the big movie -- and they all have ideas about how to make it a hit, only to finally learn why the coming of the Christ child is truly the "greatest story ever told." With participants ranging in age from junior high to preschoolers, this flexible piece is perfect for a brief Sunday school program. A Christmas Journey and Christmas Letters (Rod Tkach) are imaginative Christmas Eve services weaving together carols, prayers, scripture readings, and several brief meditations. In A Christmas Journey, the reflections guide worshipers on a journey from being home alone to the ultimate destination of the Christmas cross. Anticipation, symbolized by the lighting of the Advent candles, gives way to the joy of arrival as the service climaxes with the singing of "Silent Night" by candlelight. Christmas Letters celebrates the human connection of the holiday season, demonstrated by the diversity of letters and packages we send to one another. The heartwarming meditations build on a compelling theme: that the incarnation was God's Christmas letter to us -- and that as we live out our faith, we are God's Christmas letter to the world.

Take an engaging trip back to the months and days surrounding the birth of Jesus as you walk alongside those who experienced the arrival of a baby that changed the world. Ordinary people caught up in extraordinary events, the men and women who speak through the pages of Eyes on Jesus: The Christmas Chronicles will challenge and inspire you to reflect on the impact of Christ’s birth. Their words lead to an exploration of humanity’s need for a Saviour, and God’s unshakeable promise to send a Redeemer to rescue all who believe in him. Mary and Joseph, Herod, the Magi, the shepherds, and Simeon are just some of those who share their story of the arrival of Jesus—the Child, the Son, the long-promised Deliverer. You’ll feel the crush of the crowd in Bethlehem as families arrive for the census, the startled surprise of shepherds watching their sheep, and the panicked grief of parents as Herod’s soldiers arrive for their young sons. The familiar story comes alive with all the shocking wonder encountered by those first witnesses, some with faith, some with doubt, and some with hostility or indifference. Eyes on Jesus: The Christmas Chronicles invites us to carefully consider the Child who was born so long ago, who lived to set us free, and who welcomes us into relationship with God himself.
