Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Genera of Grasses of the United States: With Special Reference to the Economic Species The present bulletin describes all the genera of grasses that include species that are native, have been introduced, or are cultivated in the United States. Under each genus are given the species that are of economic importance, either as useful or harmful grasses. Of all grasses the grains are of the greatest importance. Chief among other useful grasses are those that are cultivated for meadow or pasture and those indigenous species which furnish forage upon the native pasture or ranges. Other important grasses are the sugar-producing species, those used in broom or paper making, and the ornamental species. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Descriptive Catalogue of the Grasses of the United States: Including Especially the Grass Collections at the New Orleans Exposition Made by the U. Sdepartment of Agriculture Sir: It is interesting to notice at the New Orleans Exposition that many of the State exhibits, and particularly those of the Southern and Western States, contain a prominent display of their grasses, not only baled in the form of hay, but in many instances in well-prepared botanical specimens. The State of Texas makes a display of 200 species of grasses indigenous to that State. California and Arizona are jointly represented by an unequalled botanical display which is especially rich in the variety of grasses. Arkansas and Alabama have also collections of large extent and prepared with great care. From Florida we find an exceedingly interesting collection of grasses, made by Mr. O. H. Kelley, of Carrabelle, containing some species quite new. Many other States, also, have not neglected to present exhibits of their resources in the line of grasses., There is in fact throughout a large portion of our country an intense interest manifested in the subject of grasses for the use of stock. In the South and West particularly the question is an absorbing one. What grasses shall we use to give a good amount of pasturage, which shall be able to withstand the long dry season of our summers? What grasses can we depend on for winter pasturage, and what to furnish a supply of hay? These questions are being continually asked, and although something has been done toward a satisfactory reply very much yet remains to be determined. A faithful and continued series of experiments for the purpose of testing the value of the different kinds which have been proposed, and of others which give promise of utility, is perhaps the first great necessity, and the next, especially among the agricultural population, is the diffusion of popular and scientific information respecting our native grasses, so that observing men may be able to recognize the species which come under their notice, and to make intelligent selections for cultivation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Useful and Ornamental Grasses There are nearly distinct species of grasses distributed through out the world, and or one-third of the entire number, are natives of North America. North of Mexico there are over 700 species, with more than 100 varieties. Six hundred and fifty species have been col lected in Mexico alone. These grasses are not all equally useful. Some of them appear to be worthless, and a number are harmful to agriculture by possessing the character of weeds or by yielding injurious products. Some of them have a very restricted range and are found but rarely. A few are limited to the Arctic zone, or are confined to the highest moun taiu tops near the limits of perpetual snow; others grow only within the tropics, while still others are found in temperate climates. Some grow in the sands along the seacoasts, some flourish only in moist meadows, and others exist in the most arid deserts; some grow in the shadows of forests, others thrive only upon open plains; some are con fined to soils heavily charged with lime, others make vigorous growth where practically no lime exists. It is with all the varied peculiarities of grasses - their individual characteristics, the soils and surroundings best suited to their growth, their productiveness and palatability - that one must become familiar in order to direct his efforts intelligently in the improvement of the forage and grazing resources of the country, the prime feature of interest that the farmer has in the subject. In the following pages an attempt is made to point out the more important grasses, briefly stating their characters and qualities. It may be helpful to present here a list of these, classified according to their uses. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Key to the Native Perennial Grasses-Midwest Region East of the Great Plains: Abstracted From Hitchcock's Manual of the Grasses A guide, Key to the Native Perennial Grasses - Midwest Region East of the Great Plains, was prepared in 1965 as a working tool for scs conservationists in the Midwest to use in identifying native perennial grasses found in their particular work area. The demand for the guide by specialists outside the Soil Conservation Service became so great, scs decided to publish it. The taxonomic key includes native perennial grass Species found in Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana, Illinois, Minne sota, Iowa, Missouri, and the eastern parts of North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Kansas. To differentiate between native grass Species and some exotic Species having Similar morphological characteristics, several of the more common exotic Species are included in the key and illustrations. They are noted by exotic in parentheses. Native grasses still are found in Significant amounts in some parts of the Midwest region east of the Great Plains physiographic province though few Species are found in any given local area. They occur primarily on nonarable grassland soil, in natural savannas, in cutover forest land, marshes, and bogs, and on abandoned cropland. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Grasses Sir: I submit herewith a number of illustrations of native and introduced grasses, with brief descriptions and notes upon the distribution of each, based upon the collections of the Department, and recommend their publication as Bulletin No. 7 of this Division. These illustrations were primarily designed to illustrate a Handbook of North American Grasses, in which all the North American species are to be figured, but as it will be some time before the remaining figures can be engraved, it has been suggested that three hundred of those now completed be published, in order to render them immediately useful and available to others. If the present form of publication had been originally contemplated, a different selection of figures would doubtless have been made. This is of small importance, however, as it is hoped to publish illustrations of all the species in the near future, and it is for this reason that references to the detail drawings are omitted. Notes upon the uses and value of the species of economic interest were published in bulletin No. 3 of this Division, "Useful and Ornamental Grasses." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on Grasses and Forage Plants, Vol. 1: Of the Southeastern States Sir: I have the honor to transmit herewith for publication some notes on the grasses and forage plants of the Southeastern States, prepared by my assistant, Thomas H.Kearney, jr. These notes are based upon direct observations in the field, made in accordance with a commission from the Secretary of Agriculture under date of June 18, 1895.In accordance with his instructions Mr. Kearney visited Knoxville, Tenn. jSelma and Mobile, Ala.; Tallahassee, Apalachicola, Jacksonville, and St. Augustine, Fla.; Savannah and Augusta, Ga.; Aiken, S. C;Wilmington, !N.C, and Norfolk, Ya. He was directed to note all the species of grasses at the several points visited, and to gather all facts obtainable relative to them which might be of. scientific or economic interest. Material assistance in accomplishing this work and much valuable information concerning the grasses and other forage plants of their respective localities was furnished by Dr. Charles Mohr, of Mobile, Ala.; Dr. A. WChapman, of Apalachicola, Fla.; Judge R. C. Long, of Tallahassee, Fla., and Capt. W.W. Woolsey, of Aiken, S. C. The paper here presented is divided into two parts the first, devoted to forage plants of actual or possible value, the several kinds being enumerated in alphabetical order for more ready reference; the second comprises a list of all the species of Graminese collected or seen, arranged according to their natural classification, with observations of purely botanical interest. This arrangement of the matter separates the economic from the scientific portions of the report, which will be appreciated alike by the farmer and the botanist. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on Grasses and Forage Plants of the Southeastern States Rice - Rice is grown by Mr. Lewis at Apalachicola for horse feed, for which he thinks it about as valuable as corn. Richardsonia scabra (mexican clover). - This plant often appears in cultivated land after the crop has been taken Off, and is usually associated with crab grass. I saw it nowhere large enough to make good hay. Opinions differ as to its worth. Dr. C. Mohr thinks it of some value. Judge R. C. Long, of Tallahassee, does not esteem it and keeps it out of his land. A gentleman who resides near Thomasville, Ala., described a succulent plant of sandy bottoms under the name of water pusley, which I think must be the Richardsonia. He says it is very palatable to cattle and is excellent for green manuring. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
