Book excerpt: Excerpt from Occasional Essays on Native South Indian Life De Quincey somewhere says that, if he stopped to consider what is proper to be said, he would soon come to doubt whether any part at all is proper. In writing the following pages I have stopped to consider, and the inevitable misgiving has often caused me to lay down my pen. Much that I have written must, it seemed to me, be already well known, and what was new was probably not worth knowing. Hoping, however, that peradventure there may be some men to whom these papers will be interesting, I have taken courage to submit them to the public. Amongst the many books which have been published on India and Indian topics, it is rare to find one that treats of the South. Since the time of Clive and Hyder Ali, historical interest has centred in the North. Travellers prefer to visit the famous cities of the Punjab and the North-West Provinces, the gardens of Kashmir, and the mountains of Nepal, rather than the less attractive towns and districts of the Southern Presidency. Book excerpt: The South India story attempted here is of a peninsular region influenced by the oceans, not by the Himalayas. Yet it is more than that. It is a story of facets of four powerful culturesKannada, Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu, to name them in alphabetical orderand yet more than that, for Kodava, Konkani, Marathi, Oriya and Tulu cultures have also influenced it, as also other older and possibly more indigenous cultures often seen as tribal, as well as cultures originating in other parts of India and the world. With South Indias Malayalam region being (in modern times) the most balanced in terms of religion and also the most literate, its Kannada zone occupying South Indias geographical centre and containing the sites of the Vijayanagara kingdom and also the kingdom of Haidar and Tipu, its Telugu portion the largest in area and holding the most people, and its Tamil part the most Dravidian and possessing the oldest literature, the four principal cultures are, unsurprisingly, competitive. But they are also complementary. This is a Dravidian story, and also more than that. It is a story involving four centuries, the seventeenth, eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth, yet other periods intrude upon it...

Book excerpt: Drawing on solid ethnographic fieldwork as well as many hours of interviews, Leprosy and a Life in South India: Journeys with a Tamil Brahmin tells the life story of Das, a Tamil Brahmin born in the newly post-colonial India of the early 1950s. After being diagnosed with leprosy, Das spent over a decade on the streets of Bombay and Madras, learning to survive as an unofficial station porter, hotel bellhop, and sometimes tourist guide. He won and lost fortunes on horses, he gambled, and he learned firsthand of the pleasures to be had in Bombay’s red light district. But for all the joy that comes through so vividly in his account, Das’s story unfolds against a backdrop of everyday violence and hardship. Re-investigated through the prism of an individual life, what are often presented as the rigid social categories of caste, religion and kinship come to be seen in fresh new ways. Through this life history account, Leprosy in South India captures all this in ways conventional accounts do not, offering a unique take on what it is to be an Indian in contemporary India.
