Several native bee populations have experienced declines in the last few decades, particularly bumble bees (genus Bombus). The western bumble bee (B. occidentalis) has been petitioned for listing under the Endangered Species Act, and this bee has historically occurred in Wyoming. However, the western bumble bee has not been monitored or surveyed in Wyoming for the last decade. Monitoring declining species is essential to evaluate their conservation status and to inform future management practices as well as policy. Here, we first examine how sampling methods (both passive and active) affect the abundance and number of taxa of bees collected. We then fit species distribution models for B. occidentalis using both historical and new data. We found that sampling method does affect the number and species of bees we collected, and we recommend that surveyors tailor their protocols to the taxa of interest. Our models suggest a decline in predicted suitable habitat for the western bumble bee in Wyoming.

Book excerpt: Increasing demand for renewable energy is driving ongoing land development for wind farms; however, few studies have investigated the interaction between wind turbines and animals. Wind farms have the potential to alter food webs by changing abiotic (warming, drying, increased air turbulence, etc.) and biotic conditions around turbines. We collected insects using two trap types in 2016 resulting in >2,500 sampling events at two scales. At the landscape scale, we compared insects collected from an upwind undeveloped area, a wind farm, and downwind of the wind farm in Wyoming, USA. Additionally, we collected insects in the immediate vicinity of turbines (±125 m from the turbine row) to investigate how insects are distributed within a wind farm. Insects were most abundant at the downwind site, which may be due to either abiotic effects of turbines or different intensities in land use. Within the wind farm insect abundance was usually lowest 30-60 m upwind of the turbine row and at the turbines, and highest immediately after the turbine row (30-60 m downwind). The abundance of bees (Hymenoptera: Apoidea) was lowest in the immediate vicinity of the turbine row (5-30 m) and was highest upwind of the turbines by 110 m or more. Wind currents around turbines may contribute to the patterns of insect abundance we observed. Learning how wind farms interact with ecosystems will help wind farm site selection and management potentially reducing interactions with wildlife.
