This book was released on 2007-08-06 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between £400 to £500 million is currently held in dormant bank and building society accounts in the UK where, for whatever reason, a financial institution has lost contact with an account holder. A large proportion of this money will never be reclaimed by its rightful owner. The Government, working with the banking industry, has therefore proposed the establishment of an unclaimed assets scheme to put these dormant accounts to productive use whilst continuing to recognise the ongoing rights of customers to reclaim their accounts at any stage. The Committee's report examines the proposed legislative framework for the scheme and its regulation, how to define and identify dormant accounts, the scope of the scheme, the proposed scheme to reunify customers with dormant accounts, a centralised national register for unclaimed assets, dormant accounts in building societies, the distribution of funds released from unclaimed assets, funding of a Social Investment Bank and local disbursement options.

Book Synopsis Administration and expenditure of the Chancellor's departments, 2008-09 by : Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Treasury Committee
Download or read book Administration and expenditure of the Chancellor's departments, 2008-09 written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Treasury Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2010-03-09 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Chancellor's departments faced extraordinary challenges during 2008-09, mainly arising from the need to respond to the emerging financial crisis and associated economic downturn. The report concludes that it is very difficult to draw final conclusions regarding their level of success - too much remains unfinished business. It draws attention, in particular, to the new relationship between the Treasury and UKFI, and recommends that the Government considers whether the formal terms of the relationship need some re-definition in the light of experience. The report is particularly concerned by the dire results for HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) of a cross-Government staff survey pilot study. The Report calls for HMRC management to publish a clear and detailed plan to provide focus and direction to their efforts to re-engage with their workforce. Noting a rise in customer complaints and that, on average, only 57 per cent of calls to HMRC contact centres were answered during 2008-09. HMRC should publish more data to enable effective scrutiny of its performance against its targets, data which is essential for tax gaps to be closed and for the take up of the working tax credit to be assessed and improved. The Report is critical of the failure of most departments to provide accurate and timely monthly in-year figures to the Treasury. Other sections of the report cover National Savings & Investment, the revaluation of UK statutory ports and the performance of the Royal Mint.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 2008 Article IV Consultation highlights that economic growth in Mauritius is responding to structural reform efforts. Tax reform, together with improvements in the business environment and investment initiatives, has spurred foreign investment to unprecedented levels and accelerated growth. The external current account deficit has eased but remains high on investment-driven import growth. The exchange rate appreciated 17 percent in real effective terms in the 12 months ending February 2008 from an overly depreciated level in 2005–06. Mauritius’s medium-term outlook has turned more favorable with the effects of the reform effort.

Download or read book Republic of Madagascar written by International Monetary Fund and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2008-02-15 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been progress in strengthening public financial management; however, improving budget execution and strengthening public finances is required. The tax and custom administration reforms will help bolster private sector-led growth and meet the ambitious revenue target to finance priority expenditure. Monetary and exchange rate policy is required to reduce inflation while preventing an overshooting of the exchange rate. Further progress is needed to foster financial sector development. A more ambitious rehabilitation plan for the electricity sector needs to be designed and implemented with urgency.

Book Synopsis Mali by : International Monetary Fund
Download or read book Mali written by International Monetary Fund and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2008-12-22 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents Mali’s First Review under the Poverty Reduction and Growth Facility, and requests for Waiver of Nonobservance of Performance Criteria. The food and fuel price shocks have begun to moderate, partly because of the authorities' supply-side measures and declining oil prices. New risks are emerging from the global credit crisis and its spillover effects onto global growth, commodity markets, and exchange rates. The authorities need to be vigilant on the fiscal front because policies have relaxed owing to external food and fuel price shocks and higher-than-expected nondebt financing.

Book excerpt: This 2008 Article IV Consultation highlights that Djibouti’s macroeconomic performance improved significantly, but inflation pressures are intensifying. Real GDP growth accelerated to 5.3 percent in 2007, driven mainly by foreign direct investment concentrated in the construction and port services. Executive Directors have welcomed Djibouti’s strong economic growth driven by large foreign direct investments in the port and other key sectors of the economy. Directors have also emphasized the importance of maintaining the fiscal consolidation objective, with a view to controlling inflation and creating fiscal space to finance the poverty reduction strategy.
