Book excerpt: Whiting Street Pond Dam is an earth-buttresed stone masonry dam, 1900 feet long with a maximum height of about 19 feet. A two level stone masonry and concrete spillway is located about 70 feet from the dam's south abutment. A gatehouse and gate chamber are located at approximately the center of the dam and contain the operating mechanisms for controlling the outflows into the City's Water Supply and to the low level outlet. Discharges from the low level outlet and the spillway converge and flow into an unnamed creek before emptying into the Connecticut River. Phase I inspection and evaluation of Whiting Street Pond Dam does not indicate conditions which would constitute an immediate hazard to human life or property. Based on engineering judgement and the performance of the dam and the outlet works, the project is considered to be in fair condition. The project, however, does have a number of deficiencies which, if not remedied, have the potential for developing into hazardous conditions. The test flood, in accordance with Corps of Engineers guidelines, is the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF). The PMF yields an outflow of 8253 cfs which is greater than the maximum discharge capacity of the spillway of 215 cfs and would result in overtopping of the dam by about 1.4 feet.

Book excerpt: The dam is a 700 foot, 35 foot high earthfill embankment and a 920 foot long, 15 foot high earth-fill dike a gatehouse with outlet controls and a 10 foot wide concrete arch emergency spillway. With the water lever assumed to spillway crest at time of test flood, spilway discharge of about 30 cfs woudl occur. The reservoir woudl be surcharged to elevation 433, four feet above the spillway crest and two feet below the dam crest. The dam will not be overtopped. The dam is generally in fair condition. Remedial measures consist of removal of all brush and trees from the downstream slope of the main dam and spillway channel and repair of spalled and deteriorated concrete on the emergency spillway.

Book excerpt: Congamond Lakes North Dike impounds North Pond which is one of the three ponds which make up the Congamond Lakes. All of the three ponds, North Pond, South Pond and Middle Pond are interconnected by culverts or bridges. Together the three ponds are approximately three miles long and up to one-third mile wide with a total surface area of about 465 acres. The North Dike was constructed to replace an earlier dike (which plugged an old canal) and which failed in 1955. The North Dike is approximately 80 feet long with a maximum height of 29 feet. The present condition of the dike is fair. There is no spillway nor regulating gates at North Dike. The present outlet for the lakes is at Middle Pond where Berkshire Avenue crosses Great Brook about 2 miles to the south of North Dike. During annual floods, the direction of flow in Great Brook reverses itself and flows back towards Congamond Lakes. The outlet structure at Berkshire Avenue has stoplogs which are inserted to prevent Great Brook from flooding back into the lakes. While the stoplogs are in place, Congamond Lakes has no outlet. After the flood stage of Great Brook recedes, the stoplogs are removed and Congamond Lakes are allowed to drain. The PMF inflow into Congamond Lakes, assuming that the stoplogs are in place at Berkshire Avenue would cause the lake level to rise to approximate elevation 232 MSL which is about 2 feet below the top of the dike.

Book excerpt: The South Barre Mill Pond dam is a small dam consisting of two adjacent concrete ogee spillways, a short earth embankment on the right side and an outlet works to a penstock at the left abutment. The present dam, constructed about 1904, was extensively damaged in the floods of 1936 and 1938 and has been reconstructed on several occasions, the latest work in 1944. The dam is in fair to good condition. There are no obvious signs of failure or conditions which would warrant urgent remedial treatment. Hydraulic analyses indicate that the spillway will not pass one-half the probable maximum flood and the spillway is considered inadequate, Recommendations for remedial work include repair of concrete at the left training wall and right spillway weir and restoration of gates to good operating condition. Additional investigation of the right spillway weir is recommended, since no data are available concerning this portion of the structure.

Book excerpt: Powder Mill Pond Dam is located on the Ware River approximately one mile upstream of South Barre, Massachusetts. The dam, reconstructed in 1908 to generate electric power for the Barre Wool Combing Company, consists of an upgated concrete spillway approximately 125 ft. long and 20 ft. high, a short emergency spillway and an outlet canal with two inoperative timber gates. The dam was extensively modified during the 1930's. Based on a visual examination of the structure, the facility is in fair to poor condition. Nevertheless, there was no evidence of structural failure or other conditions which would warrant urgent remedial treatment. Based on size and hazard classifications in accordance with Corps of Engineers guidelines, the test flood for this dam is the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF). The PMF outflow of 48,160 cfs would overtop the dam by 5.15 ft. With the water level at top of dam, the main and emergency spillways can pass 17,940 cfs which is 37 percent of the test flood.

Book excerpt: Moulsons Pond Dam is a stone masonry dam approximately 80 feet long and 23 feet high. The spillway is L shaped with a concrete cap that extends almost the total length of the dam. A bridge spans over the river immediately downstream of the spillway. The top of road is the dam crest and the west bridge abutment is the west spillway abutment. There is a 2-foot high concrete abutment at the east end that is 8 feet below the top of the dam. At the west end of the dam there is a 6-foot diameter pipe that passes beneath the roadway into a sluiceway that goes to an old mill. There is no control for this sluiceway which is always open and the water discharges into the downstream channel. There is no low-level discharge pipe.

Book excerpt: White's Mill Pond dam which was built before 1923 is a 340-foot long earthfill dam with upstream and downstream dry stone masonry walls. The dam has a maximum height of 13 feet and consists of a spillway, low level outlet, an intake toi a plant, and an earth dike. The following deficiencies were observed at the site: severe seepage at several locations along the toe of the dam; downstream stone masonry walls are out of plumb; lack of access to the low level outlet operator; erosion at the low point of the dam crest; bulging of the downstream masonry wall in several locations; stone missing from the upstream face of the spillway, mortar missing from the stone masonry spillway of the dam; heavy growth of brush and trees on the dam crest and on the dike; and an accumulation of debris in the discharge channel. Hydraulic analyses indicate that the spillway (without stoplogs) can discharge 520 cfs, or 76 percent of the test flood outflow before the dam is overtopped. (With the stoplogs, the spillway can discharge 170 cfs or 22 percent of the test flood outflow before the dam is overtopped).

Book excerpt: The stone masonry gravity dam has a hydraulic height of 23 ft., and a length of 190 ft. The dam is presently in fair condition; however, there are deficiencies which if not corrected could jeopardize the safety and integrity of the structure. The major concern is undermining of the base of the dam which has left a section of the downstream face unsupported. It is small in size with a hazard potential of high. A registered professional should be hired to design repairs to pressure leaks which appear in the face of the dam. (Author).

Book excerpt: Chicopee Reservoir Dam is a 545-foot long, 47-foot high earth embankment dam constructed circa 1926. The spillway is a 44-foot long ogee crest which si located at the right abutment of the dam and has a crest elevation (El) 168.0. The outlet conduits are a 24-inch cast-iron former water supply line and a 30-inch cast-iron blowoff. The following deficiencies were observed at the site: high degree of erosion of the principal spillway chute structure and outlet training walls; erosion gullies on the right abutment above the dam crest; brush growth on the downstream slope of the embankment; and seepage from the left abutment downstream of the dam. Generally, the dam is in fiar condition. The adopted spillway Test Flood is equal to the Probable Maximum Flood which yields a peak test flood inflow of 7565 cfs. Hydraulic analyses indicate that the spillway, without flashboards, with the water surface at the top of the dam can discharge 3,950 cfs which is less than the total routed test flood outflow of 6,450 cfs. Thus, the spillway can discharge 60% of the routed test flood outflow.

Book excerpt: Mt. Holyoke College Upper Dam is a 160-foot long stone masonry-concrete dam built in 1900 and used primarily for recreation. The dam has a maximum height of 19.6 feet and consists of a main spillway, two side channel spillways and an outlet. The outlet works are located on the left abutment of the dam. There is also an inoperable mud gate on the face of the dam. There are deficiencies which must be corrected to assure the continued performance of this dam. This conclusion is based on the visual inspection of the site and a review of the available data. Generally the dam is in fair condition. The following deficiencies were observed at the site: seepage at the toe of the dam near the low level outlet; erosion from foot traffic at the left abutment; and a growth of brush and trees in the spillway side channel. The test flood would overtop the dam by 1.4 feet. Hydraulic analyses indicate that the spillways without stoplogs can discharge 2,550 cfs, or 58 percent of the test flood outflow before the dam is overtopped. With stoplogs, the spillways can discharge 2,000 cfs or 45 percent of the test flood outflow before the dam is overtopped.

Book excerpt: Whiting Pond Dam is approximately 600 ft. long, has a maximum height of 9 ft, and includes a 13-ft. long concrete spillway. The dam is in fair condition, based on a visual examination of the structure. Although some deficiencies were noted, there no evidence of settlement, lateral movement or other signs of structural failure or other conditions which would warrant urgent remedial action. The PMF outflow of 4160 cfs (1015 csm) would overtop the spillway platform by about 2.6 ft. and most of the embankment by 1 to 1.5 ft. With the water at the level of the platform, the spillway (without flashboards) can pass 312 cfs which is 7.5 percent of the test flood.

Phase I Inspection Report written by CORPS OF ENGINEERS WALTHAM MA NEW ENGLAND DIV. and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The McLeod Pond Dam consists of a series of earthen dikes and two concrete structures. The concrete structures are the main and auxillary spillways, each of which is positioned between outcrops of ledge. The age of the dam is unknown. Based on the irregularity of the configuration of the dikes and the differences in the concrete structures, it appears that the dam was constructed over a period of years. The concrete structures are in good to fair condition. The embankments are in fair to poor condition. There are no obvious signs of failure or seepage conditions, especially at the dikes, and low freeboard present at the dikes warrant remedial treatment within a year. Based on the size and hazard classification in accordance with the Corps of Engineers Guidelines, the spillway test flood falls between a 50-year flood and a 100-year flood. Hydraulic analysis indicates that the spillway will not pass the test flood without overtopping the earth embankments. However, both the dam and pond are quite small and the potential hazard, in the event of a dam failure, is very low. Additional investigations of the seepage at the dikes, the structural stability of the dikes and spillways and the method of providing additional freeboard at the dikes are recommended.

Book excerpt: The dam is comprised of an 82 foot long stone masonry spillway, a 450 foot earth embankment to the left of the spillway, and a 30 foot earth embankment to the right of the spillway. The spillway can pass 7 percent of this flow. The dam would be overtopped by 6 feet. The dam is in generally good condition. It is felt, however, that certain normal maintenance and operational procedures need attention. These include removal of brush and trees on the upstream and downstream slopes; development of a formal warning system and monitoring of the condition of the downstream training wall. Also repairs to the walkway over the spillway are required.

Book excerpt: This dam consists of an earth embankment, and a concrete wall which extends from the embankments to the spillway on each end of the spillway. The earth embankment is 500 feet long, 8 feet wide at the top and 6.7 feet high, with a downstream slope of 2H:1V. The concrete spillway is located at the western end of the dam and is 40 feet long with 15 inch high permanently attached timber flashboards. Based on the visual inspection, and past operational performance, the dam is judged to be in POOR condition. There are large trees growing on the embankment. The concrete wall is severely cracked and spalled and has been exposed on the downstream side by erosion. Seepage is occurring through the wall and all along the downstream toe of the embankment. The test flood for this dam is the 100 year flood. The test flood has an inflow equal to 1810 cfs and an outflow discharge equal to 1800 cfs at a stillwater elevation of 233.1 which will overtop the dam by 1.0 foot. The maximum outflow capacity of the spillway with the water level at the top of the dam is 53 cfs, which is 3 percent of the test flood outflow.

Phase I Inspection Report written by CORPS OF ENGINEERS WALTHAM MA NEW ENGLAND DIV. and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ashfield Pond Dam is an earth embankment about 775 feet long with a maximum height of about 15 feet. A 30 foot long, 14.5 foot high stone masonry and concrete stepped spillway is located about 110 feet from the east abutment. A rectangular concrete low level outlet, 4 feet wide and 1.7 feet high is located at the east end of the spillway. Phase I inspection and evaluation of Ashfield Pond Dam does not indicate conditions which would constitute an immediate hazard to human life or property. Based on enginnering judgment and the performance of the earth embankment and the outlet works, the project is considered to be in fair condition. The project has a number of deficiencies which, if not remedied, have the potential for developing into hazardous conditions. Selection of 1/2 PMF as the test flood, yields an outflow of 1698 cfs (assuming the low level outlet is closed), which is greater than the maximum spillway discharge capacity of 965 cfs and would result in an overtopping of the dam by about 0.43 feet.
