Book excerpt: Brockton Reservoir Dam is a 94 year old earth embankment approximately 1,800 feet long with a top width of 16 feet and a maximum height of about 10 feet. Both the upstream and downstream side slopes are 2H:1V. The concrete spillway with a 25-foot long broad crested weir, which has been fitted with steel flashboards, is located at the left abutment. The dam appears to be in fair condition. Small trees growing from the upstream slope may displace riprap in addition to the riprap already displaced, thus exposing additional embankment to hydraulic erosion. The marshy area near the right abutment immediately downstream of the dam may be an indication of seepage through the dam, foundation or abutment. The dam does not have a low level outlet which could be used to drawdown the reservoir during emergencies. The routed test flood outflow of 2,300 cfs overtops the dam by 0.4 feet. The spillway capacity without overtopping the dam with the flashboards in place is 495 cfs and without the flashboards in place the capacity is 978 cfs or about 22 percent and 43 percent, respectively, of the routed test flood outflow.

The dam is a maximum 19 feet high and 185 feet long including main and auxiliary spillways at the south abutment. The main spillway is separated into three bays, each 15 feet long and controlled by a steel tainter gate. The auxiliary spillway is located adjacent to the main spillway and is ungated. Generally, the dam is i fair condition. Th following are deficiencies and visible signs of distress at the site: lack of a low-level outlet for draining the pond; deterioration of the downstream stone masonry wall; slight seepage through a crack on the auxiliary spillway, and at the toe of the main spillway; spalled concrete on both spillways; missing and dislodged riprap on the upstream face of the dam; trees growing on the embankment; and the accumulation of debris on the spillways and in the discharge channel. An outflow test flood of 7,010 cfs will overtop the dam by 3.1 feet. The spillways have the capacity to discharge 55 percent of the test flood before the dam is overtopped.

Book excerpt: Chartley Pond Dam is a 200-foot long 10-foot high earthfill dam built in the 1800's. A two-lane paved roadway is the crest of the dam while the downstream face includes a concrete wall and portions of the foundations for two structures. The embankment is in good condition but minor maintenance is required. Water discharges through a small outlet controlled by stop logs. An outlet at the dam for a water wheel is blocked and abandoned. An outlet controlled by removable stop logs functions as the spillway for the dam. Hydraulic analyses indicate that the outlet can discharge a flow of 1;70 cfs before overtopping the dam at El 105.6. This discharge represents 14 percent of the outflow test flood test flood discharge of 1,230 cfs. The outflow test flood which crests at EL 107.3 will overtop the dam by 1.7 feet. Draining the pond to El 96.5 prior to the outflow test flood will not appreciably reduce the amount of overtoping. The outlet cannot pass the test flood even with all stop logs removed, and overtopping of 1.2 feet will occur.

The upstream face of the dam is a vertical concrete wall with earth fill at the toe, and the downstream face is a vertical stone masonry wall. The outlet works consist of a central outlet plus a side channel spillway located to the right of the outlet. The intake to the central outlet is 7 feet by 7.5 feet and controlled by a dual set of stoplogs. The crest of the side channel spillway is 1 foot wide, 85 feet long and 6 feet wide. There are deficiencies which must be corrected to assure the continued performance of this dam. The following signs of distress were noted at the site: absence of riprap on the upstream slope of the dam below the concrete wall; uncompacted earth fill adjacent to the left abutment of the outlet; scoured and eroded concrete on the outlet works; and spalling on the crest of the side channel spillway; cracking and local depressions in the pavement on the crest of the dam. The stoplogs were replaced shortly after the inspection, and the pond level returned on a higher elevation. At a second visit to the site, seepage was noted through the crest of the spillway. The spillway can discharge 50 percent of the test flood.

The spillway is located approximately two thirds of the distance across the dam from the left abutment. The facility is considered in good condition. There are no obvious signs of impending failure or conditions which would warrant urgent remedial measures. The estimated test flood stage is about 2.7 feet below the spillway abutments. An investigation is recommended to evaluate the observed seepage at the toe of the dam embankment. Recommended remedial measures include the removal of brush from riprap and along spillway walls, restoration of eroded areas along spillway walls and gatehouse, filling of animal burrows, the monitoring of riprap erosion and seepage at embankment toe, and maintenance of the gatehouse door and reservoir sluice gate.

The outlet conduit is a 24-inch pipe located between the spillway and the right abutment of the dam. Flow through the conduit is controlled by two slide gates housed in a concrete chamber located in the embankment. The dam is in fair condition. The following are visible signs of distress: seepage just beyond the downstream toe of the dam and dike, growth of brush and trees on the dam and dike, erosion at several locations on the embankment, lack of adequate riprap protection on the upstream face of the dam and dike, corrosion of stems on the slide gates and spalled and cracked concrete on the weir and training walls of the spillway. The test flood would overtop the dike by about 2.2 feet, the dam by 0.8 foot, and a swale at the south end of the lake by 1.3 feet. The spillway can discharge only 17.5 percent of the test flood before the dike is overtopped.

Book excerpt: Great Pond Upper Reservoir Dam consists of three homogeneous earth embankments: the left embankment known as Dike A is about 132 ft. long and 14 ft. high; the middle embankment known as Dam B is about 1,264 ft. long and 18 ft. high; and the right embankment known as Dike C is about 877 ft. long and 12 ft. high; A concrete ogee-shaped spillway and stoplogs structure is located about 110 ft. left of the right abutment of Dike C. The spillway discharges into a paved stone masonry channel that leads into Great Pond Lower Reservoir. A valve chamber located in Dam B houses four valves which control the low level flows from the upper reservoir to the lower reservoir. The routed test flood outflow of 4,380 cfs overtops the crest of the embankments by about 0.8 ft. The spillway with stoplogs in place can pass 330 cfs or about 7 percent of the routed test flood outflow without overtopping the embankments. The dam and appurtenant works are judged to be in generally good physical condition, however, the overall condition of the dam is only fair owing to the inadequacy of the spillway. Light brush was growing on the upstream slopes of all embankments and a light growth of trees and dense brush and small trees were prevalent on the downstream slopes of all embankments. There was also a light vegetative growth through the floor of the wasteway. The crests of the embankments have been rutted by vehicular traffic. The valve chamber's concrete is in need of repair and, though the valves within the chamber were not inspected, they were reported to be operative.
