Book excerpt: Bolivar Pond Dam is an earth embankment approximately 150 feet long. Both the upstream and downstream faces of the dam are vertical stone walls. Bolivar Street, which is approximately 40 feet wide, is located on the crest of the dam. The concrete overflow service spillway is located approximately 250 feet right of the dam. The drop-inlet closed conduit auxiliary spillway is located about 175 feet to the right of the service spillway. The dam appears to be in poor condition. Several indications of structural cracking are apparent on both the upstream wall and the downstream wall which is a wall of the Town of Canton DPW garage. About 5 gpm seepage was noted discharging from the downstream wall inside the Town of Canton garage. The dam does not have a reservoir drain system. The test flood inflow for the facility is approximately 9,410 cfs. The routed test flood outflow of 9.405 cfs overtops the dam by 2.9 feet. The spillway system is able to pass 115 cfs or about 1 percent of the routed test flood outflow without overtopping the dam.

Book excerpt: Bird Pond Dam is an 18.5 ft. high, 291 ft. long composite rubble masonry, concrete and earth embankment to consisting of a 39 ft. long central spillway, a 132 ft. long earth embankment the right of the spillway and a 120 ft. long earth embankment to the left of the spillway. The test flood outflow (15,000 cfs.) would overtop the dam by about 5.7 ft. with stop-logs in place and 5.3 with stoplogs removed. With the stoplogs in place the spillway can pass about 500 cfs of about 3 percent of the test flood outflow without overtopping the dam. With the stoplogs removed and the spillway sluice gates open the spillway can pass about 2,070 cfs or about 14 percent of the test flood outflow without overtopping the dam. The dam is judged to be in generally fair condition because of the seepage through the left spillway training wall and because the low level outlet has not been operated in many years and is presumed to be inoperative. There is brush and tree growth on the left embankment. Mortar is missing from the joints of the rubble masonry training walls of the spillway. The concrete spillway service service bridge is deteriorated. Minor erosion has taken place on the downstream slope of the left embankment. There may also be some seepage from the right spillway training wall which at the time of the inspection could not be determined because of the high flow conditions.

Book excerpt: Great Pond Upper Reservoir Dam consists of three homogeneous earth embankments: the left embankment known as Dike A is about 132 ft. long and 14 ft. high; the middle embankment known as Dam B is about 1,264 ft. long and 18 ft. high; and the right embankment known as Dike C is about 877 ft. long and 12 ft. high; A concrete ogee-shaped spillway and stoplogs structure is located about 110 ft. left of the right abutment of Dike C. The spillway discharges into a paved stone masonry channel that leads into Great Pond Lower Reservoir. A valve chamber located in Dam B houses four valves which control the low level flows from the upper reservoir to the lower reservoir. The routed test flood outflow of 4,380 cfs overtops the crest of the embankments by about 0.8 ft. The spillway with stoplogs in place can pass 330 cfs or about 7 percent of the routed test flood outflow without overtopping the embankments. The dam and appurtenant works are judged to be in generally good physical condition, however, the overall condition of the dam is only fair owing to the inadequacy of the spillway. Light brush was growing on the upstream slopes of all embankments and a light growth of trees and dense brush and small trees were prevalent on the downstream slopes of all embankments. There was also a light vegetative growth through the floor of the wasteway. The crests of the embankments have been rutted by vehicular traffic. The valve chamber's concrete is in need of repair and, though the valves within the chamber were not inspected, they were reported to be operative.

The southerly embankment, considered the main dam, contains a masonry spillway and an abandoned outlet works. The northerly embankment is considered a separate dike. Each of the embankments is approximately 400 feet long. The dam has a height of approximately 20 feet, while the dike has a height of approximately 12 feet. The structures are in fair condition. The embankments are heavily overgrown with trees and bush. Seepage or evidence of seepage was observed at both embankments. The outlet structure, which serves as the reservoir drain, is inoperative. Hydraulic analysis indicates the test flood outflow at the dam would be approximately 580 cfs. The spillway can only pass approximately 17 percent of the test flood before overtopping of the embankments would occur. At test flood peak discharge, the average height of water overtopping the dam and dike would be approximately four inches.

Book excerpt: Long Pond Dam is located on Long Pond Brook about two (2.0) miles above Green River, a tributary of the Housatonic River in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. The dam is an earth embankment about 240 feet long with a vertical concrete core wall and a height of 15.4 feet, and maximum storage capacity at top of dam of about 700 acre feet. A concrete spillway with a crest length of 9.6 feet and a road bridge overhead is located in the right abutment; an 8-inch cast iron pipe drain near the center of the dam; one 10-inch cast iron water supply intake left of the dam center, and a second 14-inch cast iron water supply intake passes the left abutment. Water treatment facilities are located downstream of the left end of the dam. The pipe outlets are controlled by gate valves. The dam is in FAIR condition. The embankment is stable with no visible leakage. The dam top is not a uniform elevation and a few protective stones on the upstream face have fallen into the reservoir. Trees and shrubs are growing in the downstream slope of the dam. The spillway is in fair condition, but a stop log has been used to raise reservoir level for water works purposes and the approach channel retaining wall is tilting into the channel. The spillway and dam are adequate for 100 year frequency (1% probability) storm runoff though there would be little freeboard protection against wave action. A storm runoff of half probable maximum flood would raise the reservoir to about 0.9 feet above the top of the dam, assuming that the dam remained.

Book excerpt: Simonds Pond is approximately 365 feet long and has a hydraulic height of 26 feet. The storage capacity is 86.5 acre-feet. The dam has a concrete cap and stone abutments. The emergency spillway is 48 feet long and occupies the center portion of the dam. As a result of the visual inspection and a review of available data, Simonds Pond Dam is considered to be in poor condition. Major concerns are: significant seepage at the toe of the dam; missing mortar and poor condition of the joints of the spillway; extensive spalling and cracking of the concrete cap on the top of the dam and spillway; deterioration of the spillway apron; extensive spalling of the concrete gatehouse foundation; and inadequate spillway capacity. The test flood inflow was estimated to be 2,500 cfs and resulted in an outflow discharge estimated to be 2,460 cfs, which would overtop the dam by approximately 1.3 feet. The maximum spillway capacity with the water level at the dam crest was estimated to be 700 cfs, which is approximately 28 percent of the test flood discharge.

Book excerpt: Meetinghouse Pond Dam comprises two earthen embankments with an included spillway. The major embankment, the dam, is approximately 230 feet long and 15 feet high. The other embankment, the dike, is approximately 170 feet long and approximately 6 feet high. It is located to the north of the dam and includes a masonry spillway with wooden flashboards. The dam is in good to fair condition. Hydraulic analyses indicate that the spillway can safely pass the test flood provided the flashboards are not in place; otherwise the spillway dike will be overtopped. Recommendations for remedial work include the clearing of brush and trees from the dike, dam, spillway and discharge channel; the filling of animal burrows; the providing of additional riprap protection; the re-shaping of the dam crest to limit vehicle traffic; and performing maintenance work on the spillway and gate house. Additional investigations of the spillway dike are recommended to determine if seepage is present at high water levels and to determine and modify as necessary the freeboard.
