Book excerpt: This fourth title in the series 'The key debates' sets out where the term "technē" comes from, how it released a revolution in thought and how the concept in the midst of the current digital revolution, once again, is influencing the study of film. In addition, the authors investigate how technologies have affected the major debates about film, how they affected film theory and some of its key concepts. This is one of the first books to assess the comprehensive history of the philosophies of technology and their impact on film and media theory in greater detail.
Book Synopsis Brechtian Cinemas by : Nenad Jovanovic
Download or read book Brechtian Cinemas written by Nenad Jovanovic and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 2017-01-30 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores the influence of Bertolt Brechts ideas on the practice and study of cinema. In Brechtian Cinemas, Nenad Jovanovic uses examples from select major filmmakers to delineate the variety of ways in which Bertolt Brechts concept of epic/dialectic theatre has been adopted and deployed in international cinema. Jovanovic critically engages Brechts ideas and their most influential interpretations in film studies, from apparatus theory in the 1970s to the presently dominant cognitivist approach. He then examines a broad body of films, including Brechts own Mysteries of a Hairdressing Salon (1923) and Kuhle Wampe (1932), Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillets History Lessons (1972), Peter Watkinss La Commune (2000), and Lars von Triers Nymphomaniac (2013). Jovanovic argues that the role of montagea principal source of artistic estrangement (Verfremdung) in earlier Brechtian filmshas diminished as a result of the techniques conventionalization by todays Hollywood and related industries. Operating as primary agents of Verfremdung in contemporary films inspired by Brechts view of the world and the arts, Jovanovic claims, are conventions borrowed from the main medium of his expression, theatre. Drawing upon a vast number of sources and disciplines that include cultural, film, literature, and theatre studies, Brechtian Cinemas demonstrates a continued and broad relevance of Brecht for the practice and understanding of cinema. This book opens up one of the most vaguely and often ill employed terms within film theory for extremely detailed discussion, providing the most thorough analysis of Brechtianism available to film scholars. It will become a standard reference. R. Barton Palmer, coeditor of Invented Lives, Imagined Communities: The Biopic and American National Identity

Book excerpt: Winner of the Society for the Anthropology of Work book prize 2017 This volume presents a global range of ethnographic case studies to explore the ways in which - in the context of the restructuring of industrial work, the ongoing financial crisis, and the surge in unemployment and precarious employment - local and global actors engage with complex social processes and devise ideological, political, and economic responses to them. It shows how the reorganization and re-signification of work, notably shifts in the perception and valorization of work, affect domestic and community arrangements and shape the conditions of life of workers and their families.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While moving image advertising has been around us, everywhere, for at least a century, the topic has tended to be overlooked by cinema studies. This far-reaching new collection makes an incisive contribution to a new field of study, by exploring the history, theory and practice of moving image advertising, and emphasising the dynamic and lasting relationships between print, film, broadcasting and advertising cultures. In chapters written by an international ensemble of leading scholars and archivists, the book covers a variety of materials from pre-show advertising films to lantern slides and sponsored 'educations'. With case studies of advertising campaigns and archival collections from a range of different countries, and giving consideration to the problems that advertising materials pose for preservation and presentation, this rich and expansive text testifies to the need for a new approach to this burgeoning subject that looks beyond the mere study of promotional film.

Download or read book Sointula written by Paula Wild and published by Harbour Publishing Company. This book was released on 2007-10 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sointula - it means "harmony" - is a tiny community on Malcolm Island, a short ferry ride from northern Vancouver Island. It was founded at the turn of the century by the Kalevan Kansa Society, a group of Finnish utopians, and Matti Kurikka, their charismatic but impractical leader. Despite serious setbacks, including a disastrous fire in 1903 that killed eleven people, the Finns built a thriving community. Even after the Kalevan Kansa ended, locals were blackballed all along the coast for their fervour in organizing loggers' and fishermen's unions. A fresh wave of utopians arrived in Sointula in the 1960s, and while they were shunned by many residents, some of the older generation recognized in the "hippies" the hopes and dreams of their forefathers. Paula Wild lived in Sointula for many years. In researching her book, she talked to more than forty residents and translated innumerable Finnish documents and letters.

Book Synopsis Critical Perspectives on the Responsibility to Protect by : Philip Cunliffe
Download or read book Critical Perspectives on the Responsibility to Protect written by Philip Cunliffe and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2011-03-31 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume critically examines the widely supported doctrine of the 'Responsibility to Protect', and investigates the claim that it embodies progressive values in international politics. Since the United Nations World Summit of 2005, a remarkable consensus has emerged in support of the doctrine of the ‘responsibility to protect’ (R2P) – the idea that states and the international community bear a joint duty to protect peoples around the world from mass atrocities. While there has been plenty of discussion over how this doctrine can best be implemented, there has been no systematic criticism of the principles underlying R2P. This volume is the first critically to interrogate both the theoretical principles and the policy consequences of this doctrine. The authors in this collection argue that the doctrine of R2P does not in fact embody progressive values, and they explore the possibility that the R2P may undermine political accountability within states and international peace between them. This volume not only advances a novel set of arguments, but will also spur debate by offering views that are seldom heard in discussions of R2P. The aim of the volume is to bring a range of criticisms to bear from a variety of disciplinary perspectives, including international law, political science, IR theory and security studies. This book will be of much interest to students of the Responsibility to Protect, humanitarian intervention, human security, critical security studies and IR in general.
Book Synopsis The Fracture Zone by : Simon Winchester
Download or read book The Fracture Zone written by Simon Winchester and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2009-10-27 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A True Portrait of One of the World's Most Chaotic and Beautiful Regions That Explains Why Violence Has Always Occurred There--And Why It May Continue For Years To Come The vast and mountainous area that makes up the Balkans is rife with discord, both cultural and topographical. And, as Simon Winchester superbly demonstrates in this intimate portrait of the region, much of the political strife of the past century can be traced to its inherent contrasts. With the aid of a guide and linguist, Winchester traveled deep into the region's most troublesome areas--including Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, Montenegro, Albania, Kosovo, and Turkey--just as the war was tearing these countries apart. The result is a book not just about war but also about how war affects the living. Both timeless and current, The Fracture Zone goes behind the headlines to offer a true picture of a region that has always been on the brink. Winchester's remarkable journey puts all the elements together--the faults, the fractures, and the chaos--to make sense out of a seemingly senseless place.
