Book excerpt: The following repair items should be accomplished as part of the general maintenance of the dam: (1) the branches, logs, tree stumps, and garbage on the downstream slope should be removed. (2) All trees on the downstream slope should be cut off at ground level. All trees with a trunk diameter greater than 3 inches should also have their root systems removed. The resultant holes should be backfilled with compacted fill. (3) The hole in the downstream slope above the left spillway should be filled and compacted; the area of sloughing immediately above the hole should be regraded and compacted. (4) All areas of erosion should be regraded and compacted. (5) A good grass cover should be established over the entire embankment. (6) The leakage from under the right-hand pipe of the left spillway culvert should be stopped. (7) The concrete slabs at the downstream end of the left spillway culvert and under the 24 inch corrugated metal pipe which discharges directly downstream of the culvert should be repaired. Phase I Inspection Report written by James A. Walsh and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lake Heritage Dam is an earthfill embankment approximately 19.8 feet high and 1,310 feet long with a 29.9 foot wide by 4 foot high concrete weir spillway situated about 40 feet from the right abutment of the dam. The dam, located about 2.5 miles west of Ladysmith, Virginia, is used for recreation. The dam is owned by the Lake Land' or Property Owner's Association, Box 123, Ladysmith, Virginia 22501. Lake Heritage Dam is a 'small' size - 'high' hazard structure as defined by the Recommended Guidelines for Safety Inspection of Dams. The dam and appurtenant structures were in fair overall condition at the time of inspection. Maintenance of the dam is considered to be inadequate. A stability check of the dam is not required. Using the Corps of Engineers' screening criteria for initial review of spillway adequacy, the 1/2 Probable Maximum Flood (1/2 PMF) was selected as the spillway design flood (SDF). The SDF was routed through the reservoir and found to overtop the dam by a maximum depth of 0.7 feet with an average critical velocity of 3.8 feet per second. Total duration of overtopping would be approximately 1.9 hours.

Phase I Inspection Report written by James A. Walsh and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lake Land' or Dam is an earthfill dam with an embankment approximately 2,159 feet long and 28.2 feet high, and a 39.9 foot long concrete spillway. The dam, located in Caroline County, Virginia, is used to impound Lake Land' or for recreational purposes by the residents of the Lake Land' or Development Community. Lake Land' or Dam is an 'intermediate' size - 'significant' hazard dam as defined by the Recommended Guidelines for Safety Inspection of Dams. The dam and appurtenant structures appear to be in fair overall condition. Visual inspection of the dam revealed several minor deficiencies requiring further attention. A stability check of the dam is not required. Using the Corps of Engineers' screening criteria for initial review of spillway adequacy, the 1/2 Probable Maximum Flood (1/2 PMF) was selected as the spillway design flood (SDF). The SDF was routed through the reservoir and found to reach a maximum water surface elevation 1.3 feet above the top of the dam. The spillway is capable of passing up to 25 percent of the Probable Maximum Flood or 50 percent of the SDF without overtopping the crest of the dam. Therefore, the spillway has been adjudged as inadequate, but not seriously inadequate since there is not a high hazard to loss of life downstream of the dam from large flows.

Book excerpt: Lake Devolia Dam is an earthfill embankment approximately 20.6 feet high and 460 feet long. The principal spillways consist of one 24-inch and one 36-inch diameter corrugated metal pipes (C.M.P.) which pass through the embankment at the right abutment and approximate center of the dam, respectively. The left and right emergency spillway areas are natural overflow areas and are adjacent to the left and right abutments of the dam. The dam is located in Caroline County, approximately 1.8 miles west of Ladysmith, Virginia. The dam is owned by the Lake Land'or Property Owner's Association and is used for recreation. Lake Devolia Dam is a 'small' size - 'significant' hazard structure as defined by the Recommended Guidelines for Safety Inspection of Dams. The dam and appurtenant structures were in poor condition at the time of the inspection. Using the Corps of Engineer's screening criteria for the initial review of spillway adequacy, the 1/2 Probable Maximum Flood (1/2 PMF) was selected as the spillway design Flood (SDF) for Lake Devolia Dam. The SDF was routed through the reservoir and found to overtop the dam by a maximum depth of 1.0 feet with an average critical velocity of 4.6 feet per second (f.p.s). Total duration of dam overtopping would be about 1.2 hours.

Book excerpt: The dam is a homogeneous earthfill structure about 1425 ft long and 48 ft high. The principal spillway consists of a 400 ft long reinforced concrete overflow weir. The weir overflows onto a 20 ft wide concrete apron 1.5-2.0 ft below the weir crest. The concrete apron is also used as a roadway for access the dam. The dam is an intermediate size structure and is assigned a significant hazard classification. The spillway will pass 100 percent of the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) without overtopping. The spillway is rated adequate. The visual inspection did not reveal any problems which would require immediate attention. The dam is considered stable but an emergency operation and warning plan should be developed. Furthermore, a staff gage should be installed to monitor water levels.

Book excerpt: The purpose of a Phase I Inspection is to identify expeditiously those dams which may pose hazards to human life or property. The assessment of the general conditions of the dam is based upon available data and visual inspection. Detailed investigation and analyses involving topographic mapping, subsurface investigations, testing, and detailed computational evaluations are beyond the scope of a Phase I investigation; however, the investigation is intended to identify any need for such studies. Based upon the field conditions at the time of the field inspection and all available engineering data, the Phase I report addresses the hydraulic, hydrologic, geologic, geotechnic, and structural aspects of the dam. The engineering techniques employed give a reasonably accurate assessment of the conditions of the dam. It should be realized that certain engineering aspects cannot be fully analyzed during a Phase I inspection. Assessment and remedial measures in the report include the requirements of additional indepth study when necessary. Phase I reports include project information of the dam appurtenances, all existing engineering data, operational procedures, hydraulic/hydrologic data of the watershed, dam stability, visual inspection report and an assessment including required remedial measures.

Book excerpt: Little Creek Reservoir Dam is an earthfill embankment 67.0 feet high and approximately 1,900 feet long. The dam has a drop-inlet spillway consisting of a 13 foot by 18 foot concrete riser with a 6 foot diameter concrete outlet pipe. The dam, located near Toano, Virginia, is used for water supply by the City of Newport News, Virginia. The dam is owned by the City of Newport News, Virginia. Little Creek Reservoir Dam is an 'intermediate' size - 'significant' hazard structure as defined by the Recommended Guidelines for Safety Inspections of Dams. The dam and appurtenant structures were found to be generally in good overall condition. Visual inspection and office analyses indicate deficiencies requiring remedial treatment. A stability check is not required. Using the Corps of Engineers' screening criteria for initial review of spillway adequacy, the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) was selected as the spillway design flood (SDF) for Little Creek Reservoir Dam. The spillway is capable of passing up to 88 percent of the PMF without overtopping the dam. Despite the inability of the spillway to pass the SDF, the depth, duration, and rate of overtopping flows are not considered detrimental to the embankment.

Book excerpt: Beatties Millpond Dam is an earthfill embankment approximately 13.9 feet high and 365 feet long with a 32 foot wide broad-crested concrete weir spillway located at the left abutment. The dam, located about 2.3 miles northeast of Old Cold Harbor, Virginia, is used for recreation. Beatties Millpond Dam is a small size - significant hazard structure as defined by the Recommended Guidelines for Safety Inspection of Dams. The dam and appurtenant structures were in good overall condition at the time of inspection. Maintenance of the dam is considered to be inadequate. A stability check of the dam is not required. Using the Corps of Engineers' screening criteria for initial review of spillway adequacy, the 100-year flood was selected as the spillway design flood (SDF). The spillway is capable of passing up to 40 percent of the SDF or 8 percent of the PMF without overtopping the dam. A dam failure from overtopping would not significantly increase the hazard to loss of life downstream from the dam over that which would exist just before overtopping failure. However, overtopping flows from the SDF are considered detrimental to the earth embankment. Therefore, the spillway is adjudged as inadequate but not seriously inadequate.
