Book excerpt: The dam's location is Wright Township, Luzerne County, U.S.G.S. Quadrangle - Wilkes-Barre West, Pa. The overall appearance and general condition of the dam and appurtenances are fair. Based on visual observations, it is apparent that no maintenance of the dam has been performed for some time. The trees and brush should be removed from the embankment. The spillway crest, discharge channel and walls should be repaired. The spillway bridge and pier should also be rehabilitated or removed since the structure could block the spillway if it collapses. The embankment and spillway appear stable since no signs of movement were noted and the core wall and downstream slope are adequate.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this inspection is to determine if the dam constitutes a hazard to human life and property. The overall appearance and general condition of the structure is fair. The left spillway wall has collapsed, and trees and brush are growing on the downstream face. The maintenance of the dam is apparently limited to keeping the crest clear for fishing and hiking. The condition of the outlet works should be determined and repairs made as required so that the lake can be drawn down if necessary. The spillway will not function as designed during a major flood event due to the obstruction caused by the collapsed wall. In addition, the collapse of this wall will permit erosion of the embankment by spillway flows. All trees should be removed from the dam.

Book excerpt: The visual inspection and review of available design and construction data indicate that Lake Irena Dam is in fair condition. In accordance with the guidance provided, the spillway design flood (SDF) ranges between the 100 year flood and 1/2 the PMF. Based on the size and extent of downstream hazard for the dam, the SDF selected for this facility was the 100 year flood. The hydrologic and hydraulic computations indicate that the spillway will pass the selected SDF prior to overtopping the embankment. Therefore, in accordance with the recommended criteria for Phase I inspections, the spillway for Lake Irena Dam is considered to be adequate. (Author).

Book excerpt: Lake Walter Dam is located on Spring Run, approximately one mile upstream of its confluence with Meshoppen Creek in Springville Township, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania. The condition of Lake Walter Dam is considered to be good. The only significant condition noted which requires further attention is the lack of erosion protection in the emergency spillway discharge channel. The swampy condition at the toe of the dam is not considered to be significant at this time; however, the condition should be monitored to document if seepage is developing.

Book excerpt: Harris Pond Dam is a combination earth, concrete and masonry structure approximately 10 feet high and 135 feet long, including spillway. It is located on Roaring Brook Creek in Ross Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. The overall appearance of the facility suggests it to be in good condition. The only deficiency noted by the inspection team that requires immediate remedial attention was the areas exhibiting concrete deterioration. Flashboards (reportedly removed during significant storms) were observed in-place across the service spillway. Although generally considered undesirable, they appear, in this particular case, to be of little significance relative to the safe operation of Harris Pond Dam.

Book excerpt: Bryant Pond Dam is an earthfill and rockfill dam with a concrete core-wall. The earthfill extends along the upstream side of the core-wall and the rockfill extends along the downstream side. The dam, including the main and auxiliary spillways, is 425 feet long. The design height is 19 feet. The main spillway is located near the left abutment of the dam. It is a series of concrete slabs forming a cascade to the natural stream. Other than its exterior lines and grades, details of the main spillway are unknown. The main spillway crest is 40 feet long and 5 feet below the design top of the dam. The auxiliary spillway was designed to be a 175-foot long by 2-foot deep notch in the concrete core-wall. It was constructed 200 feet long. The auxiliary spillway was designed to allow water to flow over the rockfill on the downstream slope of the embankment. The outlet works is located directly to the right of the main spillway. It consists of two 2-foot square concrete conduits with concrete sluice gates at the upstream end. The various features of the dam, as designed, are shown on the Plates at the end of the report. The existing features are shown in Appendix D. (Author).

Book excerpt: Forest Lake Dam is located on Forest Lake Creek in Forest Lake Township, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania. The original purpose of the impounded water was for ice harvesting and recreation. Additionally, water releases from the impoundment activated a saw mill. Presently, the lake is being used for recreation. The overall appearance of the dam is poor. Location of observed deficiencies are shown on the General Plan. The profile and typical sections of the dam are presented and are based on field survey made on the day of inspection. The survey datum for this inspection is elevation 1527 feet above mean sea level which is stamped on the USGS Bench Mark (No. TT15K, 1931) on the large sandstone slab, upstream of the service spillway. On the inspection date (12/10/1980), the lake was being drawn down for the winter. The lake level was approximately at elevation 1523.6, or 2.8 feet below its normal level. Deficiencies observed during the field inspection are described. Visible features are depicted in photographs.

Phase I Inspection Report written by Frederick Futchko and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dam consists of a zoned, earthfill embankment that is 590 feet long and 52 feet high at its maximum section. The main spillway is a drop spillway located near the right abutment of the dam. It consists of a concrete riser connected to a 30-inch diameter reinforced concrete pipe under the embankment. The auxiliary spillway is an excavated channel along the left abutment of the dam. It is a grass-linked excavation in earth. Based on visual inspection, available records, calculations and past operational performance, PA-467 Dam is judged to be in good condition. The existing spillway can pass the Probable Maximum Flood(PMF) without overtopping of the dam. The spillway capacity is rated as adequate. There is a slope stability analysis for the embankment, and it indicates that the embankment has adequate factors of safety. There is no evidence of significant problems threatening the embankment.

Book excerpt: The condition of Bel-Air Lake Dam is considered to be unsafe/ nonemergency due to a seriously inadequate spillway capacity. The overall condition of the dam is considered to be fair. Although at this time no signs of significant distress were observed, it appears that the center of the dam has significantly settled. The design drawings show the design freeboard to be five feet, but the available freeboard is only approximately two feet. It also appears that fill has been placed on the downstream slope, increasing the crest width from the design value of 10 feet to about 30 feet near the center line of the dam and greater than 50 feet near the left abutment. The dam has no functional low level outlet facility.

Book excerpt: Indian Lake Dam is located on White Creek, a tributary of Meshoppen Creek in the southwestern part of Bridgewater Township, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania. Phase I Inspection Report written by Frederick Futchko and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on available records, visual inspection, calculations, past operational performance, and consideration of the existing normal pool level, Wanamie Dam is judged to be in fair condition. The existing spillway is a gorge that was eroded when the spillway washed out in 1955. The spillway can pass the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF), which is the Spillway Design Flood (SDF), with 7.9 feet of freeboard. Based on the size and hazard classification of the dam, the recommended SDF varies between the 1/2 PMF and the PMF. The selected SDF is based on the criteria and the downstream conditions. The pool level at maximum PMF level is 5.2 feet below the normal pool level that existed prior to 1955. The spillway capacity is rated as adequate. This rating is dependent upon removal of the remains of the timber structure in the spillway. The only significant stability problem that exists at the embankment is a bulge near the left abutment of the embankment. The owner presently has no intention of returning the dam to its design condition because there is no present requirement for increased water supply storage at the dam. There are no functional emergency drawdown facilities at the dam. Maintenance of the dam is inadequate.
