Book excerpt: The Bear Gap Dam no. 6 is an earth fill dam with a rock core which is founded on rock in a cutoff trench. It was completed in 1915. Based on a visual inspection (June 13, 1978), past performance and available engineering data, the dam and its appurtenances appear to be in fair condition. The following recommendations are made: (1) The owner shall make a detailed hydrologic and hydraulic analysis for this dam and improve the spillway capacity to meet the requirements of this study; and (2) The owner shall carefully monitor the seepage on the dam and take remedial action if seepage increases or if turbidity in the seepage water is discovered or if embankment sloughage would occur. In accordance with the Corps of Engineers' evaluation guidelines, the spillway capacity is inadequate to pass the PMF(Probable Maximum Flood) without overtopping the dam. The spillway capacity is capable of passing only 34% of the PMF peak inflow and, therefore, it is considered to be seriously inadequate. A formal surveillance and downstream warning system shall be developed by the owner to be used during periods of high precipitation.

Book excerpt: Based on the visual inspection, past performance and the available engineering data, the dam and its appurtenant structures appear to be in good condition. In accordance with the Corps of Engineers' evaluation guidelines, the size classification of this dam is intermediate and the hazard classification is high. These classifications indicate that the Spillway Design Flood (SDF) should be the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF). The spillway capacity is adequate for passing 43 percent of the PMF peak inflow without overtopping the dam. The spillway, therefore, is considered to be inadequate, but not seriously inadequate. Some recommendations presented for immediate action by the owner are: (1) that measures shall be taken to provide an adequate spillway capacity, which shall include the raising of the embankment profile uniformly to at least its design crest elevation; (2) that the downstream toe and an area 20 feet beyond the toe be cleared on a regular basis of all brush, weeds and trees, permitting close observation of the seepage; and (3) that the slab joints in the spillway channel be filled with a joint material.

Book excerpt: Bear Rock No. 2 Dam consists of an earth embankment approximately 760 feet long with a maximum height of about 42 feet from the downstream toe and a crest width of about 6 feet. The crest and upstream and downstream faces of the dam are covered with riprap. The flood discharge facilities of the dam consist of a 33-ft. rectangular stone masonry overflow spillway located on the left abutment (looking downstream). The spillway is 33 feet wide and about 4 feet deep at the control section and uniformly converges into the spillway discharge channel. The spillway discharge channel is a stone masonry chute, which terminates at a plunge pool. A dike along the right side of the spillway discharge channel is provided to prevent flow towards the toe of the dam. The outlet facilities consist of a 16-inch cast-iron blow-off pipe and a 12-inch cast-iron supply pipe. Based on the evaluation of the existing conditions, the condition of Bear Rock No. 2 Dam is considered to be unsafe/nonemergency. The structural condition of the embankment is considered to be good. The spillway capacity was evaluated according to the recommended procedure and was found to pass 30 percent of the probable maximum flood (PMF) without overtopping the embankment.

They are now been replaced by heavy trucks and lorries. African traditional methods of healing are now been substituted by hospitals. In all these, I will always love and remember Africa, the home of my birth and must respect her cultures and traditions as an AFRICAN AUTHOR.
